I really enjoyed your video. I am a hardcore Weber Kettle guy. I have been looking into fan control and the new Spider 22 pellet adapter. I was leaning towards the fan but didn't find any videos that plotted long term cooking temps and fuel usage. You answered my question. I want to put a brisket or butt on and go to bed without adding fuel. Thank you for taking the time to shoot this video.
Hey Doc (always wanted to say that). Glad this video helped you. From my experience, a fan controlled charcoal fire is more steady than a gas grill. The only other thing I wanted to try, but never did, was pellet smokers. But from all I see, you really shouldn't leave those unattended over night. So until someone proves me differently, I'll stick to charcoal :).
@@hasenmann You absolutely leave pellet grills overnight, that's the whole point of them is to set it and forget it. The good ones have a very good PID technology that keeps the temps 5-10 degrees variation. They will spoil you, trust me.
Thanks for posting your experience with the Kettle and Fireboard/Guru setup. I have the same kettle and Fireboard but haven’t purchased the fan or fan cable yet (but planning to do so very soon). Your videos were timely, to say the least. I’m impressed by the many hours of temperature stability. That Weber charcoal is good stuff - better than KBB in my opinion (which produces tons of ash that clogs my SNS).
Hey Florian. Late getting to this one. Someone gave me a link in a post on my channel. I thought this was a great review/info video. I'm really interested in a Guru and the software. No problem with a brisket cook there with sleep. Great job
PHIL IN FLORENCE thank you, Phil. A guru will do the job, I just love having it all in one device: 6 probes, fan control, WiFi, Bluetooth and precise graphs of everything (also fan speed)
Thanks for watching and commenting. Funny enough, as you posted this, I installed the fan port in my new second 26" kettle :-). After almost a year with this setup, I can not recommend it strongly enough. Temps are more stable than on any other setup I used so far (and trust me, I used my share of cookers). A gasser doesn't even come close.
Nice video I have the Fireboard but I use the IQ110. However the abilitie to plugin a portable power battery is something I hadnt thought off. I was doing a cook tonight and it started raining (no I dont have the case just a ziplock bag) during the rain the fireboard died, couldn't run a cord to it since it was raining so every 30 min out with the instant read!! But one last thing I Think its a MAJOR PARTY FOUL to use up all the charcoal and NOT Smoke something!!! This is your 1st warning! ;)
the placement tries to reduce ash kick up (and it works) by not blowing directly into the coals. For the controller, it doesn’t really matter as it controls the air input in accordance with the temp
@@ayyyebeeeen I have to admit though I never tried it - so it might work just as well. Another thought: it will always be a lot hotter below the coals and that’s probably not the best spot for a fan with a tiny motor and plastic blades :-)
no, it doesn’t. I do however use foil to cover the part of the coal grate that’s not covered by the slow’n’sear. This provides much better and directional airflow. The outlet of the blower is just below the coal grate and funnels downward. I position my SnS/baskets on the opposite side.
@3:26 you said u “connect the fan to the fan port here”. Are you connecting the Guru’s fan power plug into the Fireboard’s “Drive Fan Control Cable”? You don’t show that part in your video. Thanks
I called BBQ GURU about any compatibility problems w/ the Fireboard controller & Guru said it would void the Guru Fan warranty. Man I’ve got over $400 invested in the Fireboard & accessories I’d hate starting over w/ a whole new (Guru) system & try to sell all my Fireboard equipment at a major loss. You feel confident there’s not going to be any problems running the Guru Pit Bull Power Draft Fan in the Weber Smoky Mountain?
Well yes...of course they will say that, you are asking them about using a competitor temperature device when they have a whole selection! Fireboard + BBQ guru fan is definitely the best. BBQ guru has plenty of adaptors for any type of fan. Fireboard"s adaptor sucks which is why they made theirs compatible with any 12v fan.
Hey just a quick question, would it not be less work on the fan if the slow and sear was placed on the same side as the fan rather than the opposite side, or is it better placing it on the opposite side like you did in this video.. Nice vid btw
Hey there, thank you for watching and commenting. The adapter on the inside blows the air downward in direction of the bottom of the kettle and thus towards the SnS. The reason for this is that the fan is less likely to blow directly at ash deposits during long cooks. I don't want ash on my food :-). But to be quite honest, I haven't tried it the other way. I usually cover the indirect side with foil to make sure the airflow has to go through the SnS. So far in over a year of use, I had no trouble at all. If I adjust my top vent correctly (too wide open=gets too hot, too closed=fan will work a lot), the fan is at really low speeds at most times, somewhere in the 15-35% range. And for full disclosure: the fan is pretty much a safety net, as temp control with just the SnS is outstanding as it is. But combining the SnS with this fan setup never let me down, as long as I didn't open the top vent too far and made sure I have enough fuel. Hope this helps and makes sense :)
Not sure about the WSM, but I think it already has a fan port, correct? You will need the FireBoard Drive cable and a fan ... if you don't have a port, you also need an adapter.
Hi there. The internal battery is not enough to power the fan all night, so I hooked up a mobile battery. Actually, with FireBoard drive you have three options of powering the device: FireBoard via USB-adapter, FireBoard with mobile battery or plugging the 12V adapter into the Drive cable. With my mobile battery, I made it through the night without any trouble, the internal battery was almost full at the 6 AM mark, so I charged the mobile battery and reattached it later. Now that I have a US-EU power adapter, I will just connect the 12V cable in the future.
Hi, I wanted to give you an update. In my recent Beef-Rib-Cook (Video is online) I had a cook time of about 6 hrs and powered the fan off the internal battery. At the end of the cook, I still had some battery charge left, not much though :-).
Great video. The fireboard accepts 3rd party fans...wondering why you choose viper? Is this what you had already or is it a better fan than what is out there?
Stang Mann the fan does all the air supply and some air is drawn in even when the fan‘s at 0 rpm. A few days ago I forgot to shut it and temps were not nearly as even as with the vent closed. Thanks for watching
Could you set an alarm for your fan out put and use that as a low fuel alarm? nFor example if your fan is running at 40% to maintain a temperature and set an alarm for 75 - 80% fuel is getting low?
Flo & Slow BBQ Iwould think since the unit connects to the internet, it would only be a matter of a firmware update with a fan alarm. Anyway, atleast they are already at improving the usability. I have just ordered a Fireboard, I hope it is better quality than the maverick pro that I have now. For 3 times the price I would expect it to be.
Oh, it's a different league than Maverick. And they have been issuing Firmware- und App-Updates on a regular basis. The whole fan control was an update for existing products. Some changes are minor, some are huge. I have been cooking with FireBoard for over a year now and totally love it.
Hey Florian. Where did you get the Pit Viper fan and adapter from in Europe? The BBQGuru.eu store hasn't worked for ages, and BBQ Guru US want $120 to ship a $64 fan and adapter to the EU :(
