Styropyro presents himself as a little goofy goober who is a mad scientist in his videos, but honestly, he's extremely safety aware about what he's doing. It's one of those things where things become significantly less insane to do if you fully understand what you're actually doing.

Despite how Styro comes off, he's a genuinely smartk kid and takes safety extremely seriously. Heck, I remember this one bit where he paraphrased a question from a comment asking if they can just use sunglasses instead of laser goggles. He broke character and just yelled an angry "NOOOOO" into the camera. Probably the only time I saw him break character.
I actually found the clip, it's titled "Can you use sunglasses or welding goggles while using strong lasers" Unfortunately the full video was taken down but thankfully it was archived.

Coca cola has a ph of 2.6. lemons have a pH of 2
The body is used to and much better handeling acidic solutions than somthing basic. He did not neutralise the acid instead he diluted it by around a factor 1000 wich is also the difference between pH 2 and pH -1. i dont recomend trying what he did but to me The most dangerus part of that experiment(without any information to the contrary and looking at the bottle) was ingesting a non food grade chemical (i hope it was a new bottle)

The thing he specializes in, I'd say, is doing things that, in spite of how ludicrously dangerous it looks, is completely safe because he has a full understanding of every single part in play.
Though, recently in his "i'm sick" video, he mentioned the possibility of cancer and basically said "well that was probably going to happen eventually... meh"
Luckily it was not cancer as we've found out a few months after the fact and after ALOT of testing on his end.

Just to clarify, the reason styropyro doesn’t get hurt in the end has nothing to do with amps, volts, current, or resistance. The reason why is because the frequency at which the current alternates is shorter than the amount of time it takes a nerve cell to activate.
In other words, a lethal amount of electricity is passing through his body, but a heart attack doesn’t occur because the nerves can’t react to the current.

Flash blindness is why welders MUST wear special protective gear for their eyes, because that bright flash welding creates can cause permanent damage. I only know about it because my grandfather used to do welding a lot and had not worn the glasses once when he was a teen and he learned the hard way what it was, so he made sure anyone going into his work with him put a pair on even if you were just walking through the area. (I used to bring him and his coworkers sandwiches on Tuesdays so I had to wear them too.)

20:16 Probably mineral oil, which is a liquid insulator, funnily enough...
They even use this technique at substations and for the transformers on the poles that feed your house.
(It's also not *just* mineral oil that does this, but it's reliable, and readily available at stores due to it being advertised to consumers as "baby oil", substations and other grid components probably use a special blend that you buy in bulk, if I had to guess)
You can find insulators in just about every form of matter, yes, even gasses. (Such as SF6(Sulfur Hexafluoride))

    V = IR
Yes a car battery CAN dump 1000A into something, but at 12v that's assuming the resistance is as low as 0.012 ohms (Pretty much raw copper wire). At human skin of roughly 1 megaohm, that 12v battery is delivering 0.000012 amps, or 12 microamps which is harmless. There's a difference between what power sources CAN deliver at max power, versus what they will deliver.
Similar for high voltage. A power source that can handle 300 watts of power output max (P=VI) at a million volts should hurt like hell (Triggering your nerves), but at 0.3mA it won't really do anything and probably you won't even feel anything, if not a slight tingling. However, notice I point out power. Because at high voltages AC works entirely different to DC and penetrate skin significantly easier
Wetting your skin can decrease resistance and let more current flow at a given voltage. And that high voltage does depend if it's AC or DC (Due to capacitance effects on AC voltage through materials), as well as where through the body it's going. Is it just causing thermal burns due to the resistance of the body? Or is it going through the heart in which a tiny current can kill? That's the difference between hand to feet versus hand to hand high voltage.
Also for AC power, frequency matters. Below or above a certain frequency, your body just stops responding to voltage and it stops hurting as much or at all. Hence why million volt solid state tesla coils are wound up to super high frequencies, a mixture of human safety, and the tesla coils own impedance matching formulas making these little coils typically quite small (Tesla coils are quite frequency/impedance sensitive)
People just go "Big number = scary", and it's really not the case. As styropyro shows clearly, there's so much more nuance than "Big number = scary"

  • @Skylancer727

Actually the opposite, you don't want to be grounded when touching high power. The power can only travel through you if you're grounded so if you can stay isolated you should be safe. Just touching a hot cable won't hurt you, it's as soon as you touch anything else that you will. That includes you touching the ground. In engineering classes we had a tesla coil and a vandergraph. When we had people use it we had them stand on a textbook to stay isolated.

That's not smoke from the acid, it's acid vapors - pure hydrochloric acid boils at room temperature (also, what acids do to things usually isn't *burning* anyways), that's why he said 37% is the max, if there's more the excess would just completely boil away until it was down to that. So that's what the "smoke" is, HCl boiling into the air ready to be breathed in.
Also, the x-rays come from overloading the meter, not from the coil itself (unless you count the coil being what overloaded it as coming from that)

What the .... You mean by computers shock you and talking about a thousand bolts?
I think you are confused about volts, amps and frequencies.
A PC runs on 12, 5, 3 and 1 volts DC that's transformed from 110/220 volts (depending on the country). The thousand part is the watts.
The only reason it shocks you is because either you are messing with the power supply, your power supply is bad or one of those plus bad grounding. Also there is the frequency of the source and other stuff.

You are getting things wrong. In fact, the safest thing to do is not to be grounded, because if you are not grounded, there is no potential difference. The shock is caused by the potential difference between two cables with different potentials, such as a phase with another phase or a phase with the neutral. The shock can be caused by the potential difference between an electrical cable and the ground. If you are grounded and you touch a live wire, you will get a shock. The energy will travel from the wire through your body to the ground. Now, if you are isolated from the ground, nothing will happen because you are isolated. This is why birds do not get shocked by wires. It is also why people who perform maintenance on high-voltage live lines do not get shocked, because these towers and lines are not turned off for maintenance. If you turn off one of these towers, you will lose power to an entire city.
