  • Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (3 February 1809 - 4 November 1847), born and widely known as Felix Mendelssohn, was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music and chamber music. His best-known works include his overture and incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream, the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, the oratorio Elijah, the overture The Hebrides, his mature Violin Concerto, and his String Octet. The melody for the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is also his. Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words are his most famous solo piano compositions.
    Two Concert Pieces for two clarinets (1833)
    Concert Piece No. 1 in F Minor Op. 113 (1833)
    Concert Piece No. 2 in D Minor Op. 114 (1833) 7:48
    Ludmila Peterkova, clarinet & Nicolas Baldeyrou, bassethorn and The Prague Philharmonia conducted by Jiří Bělohlávek
    Description by Jeremy Grimshaw [-]
    In December 1832 and January 1833, Mendelssohn wrote a pair of works for a trio of clarinet, piano, and the now nearly arcane basset horn: the Concert Piece No. 1 in F major, Op. 113, and the Concert Piece No. 2 in D minor, Op. 114. Mendelssohn dispatched these two works immediately upon completion to clarinetist Heinrich Baermann and his son Carl, a basset horn player, who were touring Germany and Russia at the time. As tokens of the composer's personal friendship with the Baermanns (and his desire to help young Carl establish his career as a professional composer), the two Concert Pieces stand as the only compositions for basset horn in Mendelssohn's oeuvre.

    Félix Mendelssohn a été touché par la grâce divine le jour où il a écrit ces pièces à la beauté intense... Quoi qu'il en soit voilà une musique majeure dans le répertoire de la clarinette

    Remarkable! I've never heard these pieces played with such flair and assuredness. The orchestra is fine, too. The two soloists are unknown (to me) eastern European clarinetists of the highest caliber. I'd like to hear more about them.

    You know, I'm forced to admit that in some respects I've underestimated Mendelssohn. I feel he sometimes starts pieces by dishing out formulaic, hey-kids-let's-get-serious padding, which in the context of Romanticism is a wet blanket. And yet, once he gives in to the urge for wit and brilliance, he's just irresistible. I was won over by the humor of the F minor piece, and in the D minor piece, the passages for clarinet with only basset horn accompaniment is a textbook for wind instrument writing. I don't play brass or woodwind, and I have no clue which of these pieces is a bigger payoff for the soloists. MANY thanks for sharing these spiffy performances, along with the score.

    This orchestration only serves to blur the beauty of the music ; Mendelssohn should have kept it the way he wrote it.

      What were they originally? Trios for clarinet, basset horn, and piano?

    • @EmilianoManna
      @EmilianoManna 5 лет назад +3

      @@StuartSimon Yes. The first piece was orchestrated by Mendelssohn himself the week after completion, the second was orchestrated later by the dedicatee of the piece.
