Tres beau.

Johan Botha (Tannhäuser) was a great Wagner tenor, absolutely reliable. Sad that he passed away so young in 2016😢

I listened his Tannhauser in a concert performance here in Turin under the conducting of the great Semyon Bychkov. Unforgettable !!

Love the production. Otto Schenk and Günther Schneider Siemssen. Golden age!

Wow. The act had less than two minutes to go, before the beautifully satisfying conclusion of Tannhauser's exclamation, "To Rome!" and exit.

If only opera still had these sort of traditional productions......... it's all gone long before 2024, but I'm sure that we will return to opera as it was intended by the composrers, even if it takes more than a few years. What we get today, in most cases, is a pitiful representation of what grand opera should be! Just look at the splendour of this Schenck/Schneider Siemssen production!

I was at this matinee performance! What a cast! Botha managed to make Tannhauser sound easy. Westbroek was a radiant Elisabeth, although her high notes were shaky. DeYoung was a sultry Venus, she too with some wobbly high notes. Groissbeck, a sonorous king. And then there’s Mattei, the baritone with gold in his throat.
Note: the harp that you hear during the song contest is played by Emannnuel Ceysson
Here is this same cast, sans Botha, discussing the production ruclips.net/video/YFpkDfLxqUo/видео.html

I adore Eva Maria. I had hoped to see her as planned in Lady Macbeth of Msenk, but she canceled. I am now hoping to see her next month in Dialogues of Carmelites. I have already seen her as Sieglinde, Elisabeth (Tannhauser), and Minnie (Fanciulla).

It’s worthwhile if you have a great tenor. The performance from Bayreuth, with Gwyneth Jones as both Venus and Elisabeth, is my absolute favorite. It has Walther’s aria.

Yet another Met production that seems taken from an antiquary, even from Wagner himself times. Oh it is boring... The singing is overall good though and Levine's conducting is excellent.
