    I’ll order two of the lens hoods .... excellent result ...

    Now I think I understand what it is about those lens hoods I see on pro cameras. I used to think it was something stylish that was intended to look good but didn't really do much. It blocks spurious light from hitting the lens at angles that interferes with light coming in directly from the imaged scene. Excellent work randoneur!

      Lens hoods are definitely worth using, adding little weight while helping to control off-angle light issues, plus they also offer impact protection for the front lens elements, more so if the hood is a rigid plastic or fiberlass that can flex enough to absorb shock.

    I definitely like the idea Pete, and had wondered about doing something similar myself after you'd commented to me that the lens ring was screwed on, thus easily removed and worked with to get a good fit while figuring out a hood design approach, versus handling the camera more than necessary. But, with no working video on my Zino 2 yet, I've not pursued anything, so I'm watching for your progress, which looks good so far!

    • @randoneur

      Daryl. the problem with screw on is getting the alignment right. You really need a tulip shape to allow for the wide horizontal aperture, but if you make the hood cylindrical you lose a huge amount of vertical shade. I'll keep playing. Hope you get your camera sorted soon and can finally get to shoot some video. A bit of a bummer, as we say here :-(

    • @Ambress

      @@randoneur, sure, I realize what you're saying about the cylinder vs. tulip shapes and I was indeed still envisioning a tulip. Referring to the screw-on ring, I just meant that taking it off makes the ring itself easier to fumble around with and ensure a slip-over hood was a sufficiently snug fit for the ring. I've done that for what I'm calling a "snoot" until the time comes that I've got a working camera and can trim it to a better length and petal shape to try out. It's too heavy at the moment, about 1.5g, and I'd liked to target under 1g which should be doable given I expect it is about twice the length I'll end up with. drive.google.com/open?id=1rpMgMuqNU6G7gghV8R9-7BU8W13RVubd

      @@Ambress yes. That will be way too long! You'll have serious vignetting with that 😮

    • @Ambress
      @Ambress 4 года назад +1

      @@randoneur LOL....yes, of course it is too long....just something to start from before cutting it down to size. I've got another that I fashioned yesterday from photo paper after downscaling and printing a petal hood template for a Nikon 24-50mm zoom lens. It is still too long, but being printed on paper it can be trimmed to the needed length once I get the camera working again. It made no sense, but I read the Z2 camera's fixed focal length lens as specified at both 28mm and 40mm lengths, so I'm not sure what it is. I chose the 24-50mm lens as possibly too generously cut back for the horizontal coverage while not cut back enough for the vertical, but the latter is easily trimmed. Once I find something that seems workable, I'll transfer the paper shape to the plastic and trim accordingly. drive.google.com/open?id=1gxCVrfh2hPFWfQSPeXq9g5X2_Fy0-bnk

    Hubsan should pay you some money and include this with their drones and ship it to existing owners. :)

    Thanks for sharing. I am glad to see such a simple fix, and only wondered how far out the hood could be before vignetting became visible.
    Lens flair is nothing new to photography, and hoods help mitigate the issue quite well. Not that I will hold my breath, but replacing the thread on lens cover with a deeper concave version would be a cheap fix for Hubsan to to save face on a good product overall.
    My son loved model rockets, so I have tons of various sized tubes to play with in making a slip on hood! Cheap!

    • @randoneur
      @randoneur  4 года назад

      The most time I spent on this was adjusting to eradicate the vignetting. it takes quite a few trial adjustments to get it right. A threaded sleeve could offer some protection and its something I'll also look into.. I'm also going to try a shade on the quad itself. As long as i can keep it out of camera view it migt work better and be simpler than a lens hood.
      The results are actually very dependant on the position of the sun, and the ground you're flying over. In very low bright sunshine this afternoon the hood didn't perform that well, but it was only a few degrees above the horizon. I'll continue experimenting :-)

    Will you be making a few finalized versions of the hood for sale? I’d love to purchase one once it’s been proven to pass the tests. Also, which FB group are you part of? I Would like to join in.

      It's only cardboard. I'll do a template once finalised. You can make one and aspate in 5 minutes for nothing :-)

    If u got to do that with a drone straight out the box then forget it. Wait for a pro version or a eventual update to the camera.

      It's just a lens hood that is slipped onto the camera barrel. It's not a "mod" to the camera itself. That looks nice for sure. Isn't that what the ND filters are supposed to do?

    • @cyberherbalist
      @cyberherbalist 4 года назад

      ND filters are to cameras what spectacles are to human eyes -- they filter out certain wavelengths or reduce the intensity of light. His lens hood does not interrupt light coming straight into the camera lens, but it blocks light coming from extreme angles into the lens which cause interference with light coming straight in. See the photos of the lens hood he provides: ruclips.net/user/redirect?redir_token=IpcQ45lxB8a_Osp6TT4mhNDNVlp8MTU4Mjg4NDM4OUAxNTgyNzk3OTg5&q=https%3A%2F%2Fphotos.app.goo.gl%2FuwoVT1LJau5kMkTZ7&stzid=UgySj5u7FDqkVoc2Y5p4AaABAg.95W_WLvOZL995WciSo_QkA&event=comments
