Anthony Edwards Is Forcing Me To Say The Unsayable

  • Anthony Edwards is doing something unbelievable.
    In the modern NBA where stars want to play the least amount of games possible, we have a young star near the top of the NBA making no excuses, wanting to compete against the best players, playing both sides of the ball , an homage to the NBA of the old.
    You’ve heard the comparison a million times at this point, that Anthony Edwards is the next Michael Jordan and for obvious reasons, but some things are getting swept under the rug. Like Ant said, he wants the comparisons to stop, but Anthony Edwards is different in some key ways, let me rephrase, he’s actually better than Jordan in some key ways.
    By the end of the series, Durant said that Ant is his favorite player to watch.
    Two greats acknowledging the next up.
    And what we’re seeing now actually hasn’t been done. If we look at the best playoff games from players 22 and and put them on a chart, you’ll see familiar names, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, heck we know how crazy Luka went in the playoffs a few years ago. And at the top of the list is Kobe Bryant, and Anthony Edwards? He’s just in the top 11, 3 times. There is no player that shows up more than twice in the top 20 besides Antman. These are not one off performances. He’s starting to do it consistently already. And here’s Michael Jordan, oh wait he hadn’t made the playoffs yet cause he got drafted as a 22 year old.
    But while we see the barking Anthony Edwards now, *he was always different from his peers.*
    And that’s piece #1. Anthony Edwards has always been like this, he just stayed true to himself, even when it wasn’t technically the best move for his career.
    Anthony Edwards has been unapologetically himself, even at the expense of his image at times. While everyone is hailing him now, back then people thought he wasn’t serious and that could be a problem.
    That’s why he wants to play as much as possible, he wants to play against the best, and kill them. The elusive…killer mentality… we talk about.
    Anthony Edwards might do that, yet his values are a bit different.
    But it’s not just his individual success that he believes in. And that’s piece #2, Anthony Edwards wants to be the best but it’s not limited to himself, nor does he need the credit, and that puts him one step ahead of MJ.
    Anthony Edwards’ ego isn’t to show he’s better than the people around him, no he’s invested in their success without forcing them. He believes in his teammates, maybe even more than they do. Something that even Jordan couldn’t figure out.
    Most teammates of Jordan have spoken out on his ruthlessness.
    Yes he got a great deal out of his teammates and he led by example, but several walked away resenting leadership, or in a lot of cases, not being able keep up. It’s not a style that works with everyone and Jordan didn’t figure out how to lead until he lost to the Pistons in 1990, 6 years into the league at 26 years old when he figured out he needs his teammates to excel to win.
    And it’s not a facade either, remember Anthony Edward’s reaction to the Suns getting Kevin Durant?
    Edwards motivates the team to be better, to believe that they are better. The Timberwolves are the best defensive team in the NBA because of Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels, good team defense, but don’t get it twisted, Anthony Edwards wants to guard the best player and he does. Something that more stars in the 90s and 2000s did, before offense became the only requisite to being a superstar. It’s a lead by example case that motivates every player to do it more. No excuse if your best player is spending the energy to lock up defensively.
    *The more and more I looked into Anthony Edwards, the more I found myself reminded of 90s,* 2000s basketball. Yes there have always been egos, and yes, players are selfish in any era, but the desire to compete and win being the only thing that matters before social media, before the big player deals, before Adam Silver took over, is something that we all miss now.
    In 2003, the average number of games played by all stars was 79. Last year the average was 64.
    Edwards played 79 games this year, 78 games last season, he hasn’t played less than 70 games in his 4 seasons.
    And so stop the comparisons of Anthony Edwards with MJ. He already knows how to lead in a way to encourages chemistry and not forces it. There’s a level of trust knowing Ant isn’t scheming or manipulating, he just tells it how it is. *I haven’t been this excited about a young player in the past decade* because he embodies everything that I think the game is missing now.

      He's young enough to never have experience MJ's era at all, so I don't think he really feels the same pressure that guys like LeBron and every other "next Jordan" in the past felt. These young guys are very detached from the Jordan era, which is for the better in some cases. They're not going to feel a need to chase Jordan as much when he's been a retiree their whole life, and not many young ballers are going to watch hours of a bunch of grainy old clips of Jordan either, they probably check the clips out of curiosity and assume Jordan's the GOAT but don't really connect to him at all

    I was watching this video and I was enjoying the highlights but then the video personality stated one of the most insane comments "He's actually better than Jordan!". No sir, no shooting guard of the future will be better than Michael Jordan. He has set the bar too high with making a career of earning three points the hard way with patented reverse wrist flick lay-ups (Which is a stat and hasn't even been calculated yet.), the amount he achieved in the little time span he achieved it in, and the way the teams played defense in that day with the reinforced edge of their personalities. The psyche in that era is more assertive with a threat of violence so the physical toughness is full on contact to reinforce the psychological health of the athlete, increase contact, and condition the anatomy for more contact. This is why 90' era athletes and early 2000' era athletes are predominately more chiseled than star athletes such as Nikola Jokic or Luka Doncic in contrast to Brent Barry, Wally Szerbiak, Rik Smits, or Vlade Divac. This is exactly what Anthony Edwards is explaining as todays NBA athlete is allowed to sit out games and become unconditioned to the contact sport while making his body psychologically weaker thereby affecting the physical. Kevin Durant is widely known for not lifting weights throughout his career, however, in the 90's to early 2000' it was a mandatory action being enforced by the league because their bodies were continuing to need conditioning as competition was becoming more competitive. In the 90's you wouldn't see players such as Kevin Durant survive an entire career because his body would'nt have been capable of creating the tolerance needed to withstand full on court physical contact such as hand checking where the defender has more leverage as to where the offensive player can and can not go and the brunt of the dominant Power Forwards and Centers who were not "Stretch" positions. Hence, the reason you have the rule change to get away from hand checking and allow the less physically dominant proceed to play "Hero" shot ball, when in the 90' era and early 2000's every team member had a moment where he or she could be the game hero, and every team member touched the ball each play before proceeding to shoot (Basketball 101). When in doubt get back to the fundamentals for the success of the sport.😎

    ANT may not be the “best” player in the NBA, Joker, Doncic, Lebraun, pick your guy. Whoever you pick, fine, but no doubt ANT is the most exciting, fun player to watch… well, that’s an interesting discussion.

    Just let the kid play and do his thing. He’s really done a pretty good job of shrugging the media off , but the more that is said the more likely it is to get to him. I mean I guess MJ had to hear it so idk

  • @kaiba8954
    @kaiba8954 26 дней назад

    I mean its understandable why people compare him to a young MJ. His killer mindset, explosive athleticism, the way he plays hard on both sides of the ball, the way he pushes his team, the trash talking, etc...

      Man, y'all with this killer mindset stuff are cracking me up. He talked trash to Jama l Murry and then went out and had one of his worst games of the playoffs. I love Edwards game, but let Edwards be Edwards. Stop projecting all of this Jordan nonsense on this young man.

    • @dreskee8422
      @dreskee8422 22 дня назад +1

      @rudybutler1697 That's subjective. But I will debate that Scottie Pippen is a better defensive option while at the same time leaving space in his game to score at a consistent rate of speed. Scottie had a great mid-range bank shot. However, Larry "Legend" Bird is a more accurate scorer and does surprised the offense while he's on defense. Larry Bird does have the height advantage though. But Scottie "Scott Pop!" Pippen is a stone cold killer on defense.😎

    Having amazing one-off games is getting less impressive in the modern NBA, it only takes a guy getting hot from 3 and they have a historic game. Because of the 3 ball, the variance in shooting is higher nowadays. We're seeing higher highs, and lower lows.
    Also, the guy feels nothing like MJ. I don't know why you mention the 90's, because this smiling, giggling Gen-Z atmosphere he embraces is nothing like what the 90's was like.
    Finally, he's just not as talented as MJ is. Doesn't have the skill, or the tools. This needs to be brought up because we all know of MJ as the GOAT, even in his early 20's before winning, he looked like a total freak. He also loved to put on a show - took pride in things like the dunk contest, while Ant wants nothing to do with it.

    well yes he does have more 40 point games in the playoffs and u have to give respect on how difficult it is however with how much eieser the league made it to score its more like subtract 10-2 points from the total and u have the same amount as people in the early 2000 and 90s

    • @jeffsullivan4150
      @jeffsullivan4150 25 дней назад

      I hear you, but you just have more top level talent in the league now. Edwards is a high flyer, but Brunson has been the best player in the playoffs so far in my opinion.

    U have to face adversity before u win. As much as ant is mjs second coming even MJ didn't win in his first few years the chip. But the problem is small market minisota. If they fail next year not reaching NBA finals maybe they do it this year but then the role players will be off and ant would get stuck and finally move.

    I dont get the whole ant jordan comparison. If you comparing just their game then yea a lot of players today have a bag like jordan or even deeper. The thing that still seperates Jordan and keep him in relevant conversations of goat etc is his accomplishments. Which Ant does kot have, so I wouldn’t compare him to Jordan anymore than I would other players in the league. Now it just so happens that I am one of those who are more skeptical of jordan ls era and his accomplishments and I like to focus on those players game and bag more so than they team accomplishments and awards, so I am more prone to compare lots of players to jordan myself. But Ant Edwards doesn’t stand out particularly

    • @dreskee8422
      @dreskee8422 22 дня назад +1

      @marlontroy2064 He can not. Unfortunately, if you've watched Michael Jordan' career games you would know that Kobe Bryant copied the same style of play from Michael Jordan. Anthony Edwards can only do the same as the standard has been set in place as to whom is the greatest Shooting Guard of any era. Anthony Edwards can contribute his own legacy, however, it is unfair to the generations after Michael Jordan to compare any Shooting Guard to Michael Jordan.😎

    #3:14
    Jordan drafted as a 22yo.
    Think about that. Imagine Jordan coming out of high school or getting drafted earlier?
    Your framing is skewed. But overall the comparison are warranted as well he needs his own lane to flourish.
    Anybody being compared to MJ is the highest compliment a basketball player can receive. Don't shadow hate.

    • @dreskee8422
      @dreskee8422 22 дня назад +1

      @brucebanner6147 If there's any shooting guard being compared to Michael Jordan, than that shooting guard is being done a disservice because the expectations for his or her stat line and winning streak is too absurd to fathom. Executing a Three Peat at will two times during an NBA career without behind the scenes cheating of the game is too difficult for any future athlete. This is why no one in their logical state of thought should expect all of Michael Jordan' records to be broken by another Shooting Guard of the future. And when you account for the fact that he had Scottie Pippen on his team as another weapon, you can begin to acknowledge the fact that the bar is set too high for the future to achieve the same standard.😎

    This take is legit why people in your generation are looked at as bandwagon followers, none of yall said anything about him last year lil bro hasn’t even made it the conference finals before yesterday. And Bird won the championship that year in 86 Larry Legend was just built different had it not been for his back injury he’d have at least 5 rings instead of 3 💯💯💯💯
