The Bish in the 80s was a mad place to be a teen. Sports ruled the school, The Jes were the opponents at all times, and Nuns Island was the launching pad for craic city-wide. Dan Taheny was a brilliant teacher. Bridie Clarke was a hapless servant of mankind. Brother Linus was a savage who had no business being around children. Gwon The Bish.

Who remembers the student strike on the little bridge, late 70s, protesting that we didn’t get a half-day to watch Ireland play Norn Iron? Joe Lally called it ‘the debàcle on the bridge’, traffic was snarled for an hour, prefects were sent out to ‘negotiate’. The strike was ultimately broken and anyone who mitched for the afternoon was flogged the next day by the Dinger… full disclosure, I mitched and escaped detection. Ireland lost btw, awful game 😢.
