Seems to be pretty much unanimous that this is the best song on the album. It might well be the best song in her entire catalog. When I'm not listening to music, this is the song in my head right now. And my heart.

Opening reminds me of "Us and them", lyrics remind me of "comfortably numb". The vibes are hypnotic. I like it.
This is a perfect segue to Dar Williams' surprisingly appropriate cover version of "Comfortably Numb."
I think, too, this song could have been a nice fit anywhere on Dark Side of the Moon

Really? It's just the music gradually calming down until the song ends. I really loved the when the guitar kicked in, it feels so huge after minutes of reverb

The guitar kicking in is so great, after minutes of reverb, the sound of clear, loud and bold guitar is insane. It sounds huge, the best way I can describe it is as if you're seeing a new color

This has such a blend of Us and Them and Comfortably Numb vibes while being it's own thing altogether. I dig it. Not to mention strong Twin Peaks reference. "We are the dreamers, who dream, and then live inside the dream"
This is definitely gonna go down as a classic in Annie's discography. It's one of the best things she's ever written.

Annie strictly practices moderation when she's writing songs. She calls it as "Deep Nun Mode"
Some drugs do prop open the window that lets creativity flow out. There are lots of songwriters that admit being high when they write certain songs. And there is a lot being discovered recently about psilocybin mushrooms. What you learn from drugs, if you're capable of paying attention, is that the window always closes again and you are left to your own devices. And your own devices is you.
Considering that the chorus of another song on this album is, "so who am I trying to be / a benzo beauty queen?", drugs might've had something to do with it. Though maybe not the the drugs we'd expect.
The first time I heard this song I couldn't believe what I was listening to. There are so many great things about this song. First of all the singing is just beautiful. Lyrically it works as an ideal centerpiece for the album. Choice of tempo is inspired. Everything is mixed perfectly and the use of reverb and echo are tasteful. The chord change at around 3:19 grabs me every time I hear it. All the instrumental parts are wonderfully written and played and the solo is badass. Fading out with those sounds becoming increasingly muffled puts you exactly where the artist wants you to go. I'm shocked how great this song is as something so clearly inspired by Ms. Clark's influences but so unique at the same time. WHAT AN ACCOMPLISHMENT!
This was so nice to listen to it on headphones, everything is so well mixed!

The stars have finally aligned, I am finally listening to this music. I am only discovering St Vincent with this album, and my mind is blown! I have taken several walks with it, I have listened to it in the background, in the morning, in the evening... It just goes with lots of different places and times of the day. It's grounding, calming, and so SO beautiful. To me, it's strange at times, but in the best of ways, and not demonstrative at all. I don't think I've wrapped my mind around it completely yet - so I'm just listening to the album on repeat and still discovering new things every time haha. Thank you St. Vincent, for your music and for sharing who you are!

Can't hide that Texas voice.
Perhaps it is influenced by Us and Them since it shares the key and Camelot (D major and 10B respectively), but I would say that the BPM are closer to “Sun King” by the Beatles... 75 in Sun King, 73 in Us and Them and 80 in Annie’s song. However, when you listen to the harmonies and the singing style... I definitely think it owns more to the Beatles than Pink Floyd. Besides, Annie is a big fan of the Beatles... just check her cover to “Dig a Pony” which is awesome! I can even hear that some of those guitar spike sounds intertwined in the beginning of the song are evoking the cricket sounds in Sun King (maybe that is a step too far)😅. It would be lovely if Annie could tell us. But I would say that both Pink Floyd and Annie were heavily influenced by the Beatles on this one. It’s an amazing song anyways. Love the album... and I would say that Annie is reaching impressive heights when we put her at the level of Pink Floyd and the Beatles. Love St Vincent ❤️
