I've watched a lot of spark reviews in the last two weeks. Yours was the first I have seen by someone using it as I aspire to do rather than just being a geek about it as a piece of tech. Just a lovely thing to watch as well as being informative. New subscriber here!
Filming Spark review using Spark... this blew my mind!
Maciej Kobus way better than having someone talk for 10 minutes to then show 30 seconds of video from the actual product.

All of the spark reviews I've watched have talked about how quiet it is, but your review is the first to actually show it by recording good audio even with the drone right next to you! Definitely looks like a fun drone! :)
I agree with you Matt, Philip's use of the Lav mic lets us see just how quiet it is, and how much fun it is.

By far the best spark review I've watched and I have watched a lot. Some several times. Your style is honest and real world. You don't bash on the sparks negatives. And your footage is superb. Thank you so much. New sub and will check out your back catalogue. 👍👍
@lilcreature You've just stumbled upon a master. Phillip's a top 3 "celebrity" in the digital video industry IMO. He was one of the DSLR video pioneers back in the 5Dmk2 days....2008 or so. He solo-films an incredible travel show called the Wonder List on CNN (still running). So basically...nice find!

I’ve seen this video and decided to see it again. You’ve made me really proud of owning and flying a Spark. The saturation an even exposure levels are magnificent. It truly feels like I’m watching a Hollywood Feature Film. You can’t get it any more cinematic than this for a 1080p 30fps fixed profile.

You can use USB OTG to connect the controller to your phone/tablet if no one has mentioned it. Good review. Makes me long for a British accent.

Philip, You can connect the controller with a hard wire to your mobile and it is more secure as well. Great video though!

This video made the decision for me and I bought a Spark. I felt like I was watching a beautifully shot nature program with perfect narration. I watch this video often with headphones.

Wow, incredible. I can imagine you doing an almost drone ballet , drone choreography. Doing moves no one has ever seen. I’d love to spend some drone time with you. the shots through the woods were the best drone images I've ever seen..... very nicely done... impressed someone hard to impress.
a few years ago we were just filmmakers. today we are drone pilots. it is still amazing which chances these flying cameras offer to tell stories from a different angle.

Phil, I'm one of your biggest fans, and this was especially interesting, partly because you talked about manual settings and got into some technique about flying. I've always felt like your kind of the "every mans" video guy, because you get so involved in what your talking about. I'm also glad that you reviewed the Spark because it's so much more affordable for the "average guy". Love your shots, and I'm knocked out with the video quality. It may look clearer than my hand held Canon AH1 Hd camera. Not bad for the price you pay for the Spark. I'm impressed, and thank you again for taking your time to do this. Sincerely, Marc Trainor.

I love that your reviews are comprehensive (and long) but still genuinely interesting. A lot of other reviewers using the Spark didn't have the remote, and they declared the drone utter garbage right away, which seemed hasty in my opinion. Video quality looks quite impressive to be honest, despite YT compression. Don't care about gestures, but the palm launch & landing is neat. Lack of profiles is disappointing. Definitely a contender for my next drone purchase. Thanks for the review, Philip!
Is the video compression due to youtube or the spark? What is the compression like on the footage?
LFP Animations compression probably due to youtube. but the footage will he hard nonetheless because of the sharpening
The video looks kind of terrible to be frank. It's symptomatic of the same problems I find in most consumer drone footage: low dynamic range and low bitrate
Pretty sure that's YT's doing, look at the text around 3:45. Heavy compression surrounding it.
just checked vimeo version. 100% a youtube compression issue
compression is horrible when it comes to grass & trees...that's the way it is.

This was a very well done review. Almost thought I was watching a David Attenborough documentary. This is also the review that makes me put a tick in the checkbox for the buy.
But an OTG cable mate, it will allow you to use a data connection between your controller & phone rather then if you use the wifi which can disconnect.

You have one of the best Spark reviews. I liked the way you just jumped right in and experimented what COULD be achieved with it vs. what it can’t do. I have one and what you said about keeping it close is spot on. It is extremely irresponsible to throw these things in the sky and fly 3-5 miles out of line of sight.

Philip you may have discovered this shortly after your video. If you wish to palm land in a mode such as Tripod, just place your hand under it as per Gesture Mode, and then pull down on the left joystick and it will land in your hand and shut down.
Watching Julian Wakefield demonstrate gesture mode was the scariest thing I've seen since The Terminator!

Thanks, Philip. I did a test grabbing stills at 3:30 from RUclips, Vimeo, and the raw file in Windows MPC. Obviously not frame accurate, but a comparison in Photoshop at 100%, while not night and day, shows just how much RUclips mangles uploads to cater to the lowest common denominator. I've gotten into the habit of exporting H.264 mp4 files at at least the same bitrate they were captured. This has gone some way to mitigate this result. I cringe at the great majority of stuff I have uploaded in the distant past (both for quality and content). :)
I just picked up a Spark with the fly more and googles pack. I couldn't agree with you more on your review; you are spot on! Great video and thanks for such and honest review. I'd also like to mention that I love the idea that you did a review while using the very product you were reviewing.

Good luck to anyone that fell in love with the song towards the end as much as I did. I've been trying to find some way to buy, or at the very least stream, this song, more specifically the entire album for 2 days now. The people that made it (Tangerine) have absolutely no internet presence whatsoever outside of that music bed website. And of course you can't just buy the album on there for personal use unless you want to pay hundreds of dollars for it. God, it sucks so bad just getting a little taste of something you know you would be obsessed with :-(
i like the spark ease of flight 1080p if fine its small and costs a lot less...thats why it be seen as the best small drone out there now...and your footage really show how well it does in tight places ie in the woods
it's a very nice review and i like video close to the ground, exploring nature with human eyes...... High definition video and perfect exposure doesn't mean "good" video. Nice toy for mature pilot. What i like for Spark? A stronger, more reliable, more stable connection between RC and drone.
minus the lack of 4k and short battery life, this thing IS fun and awesome. perfect for my proposes and not attracting too much attention.

Philip, in case you didn't know you can get a cable to go between phone and controller.
So that will not kill battery as bad.

Phil... I really enjoyed your review. I've had my Spark for 5 days now (my first drone) and loving it. Bought 6 batteries! I've been unable to find a manual exposure setting for video. ?? So when I head for a bright sky, everything clamps down. Where is it?
Rick Morton tap on the Icon with those slide-buttons(?) And there you have your settings. On the upper Screen Edge are the Buttons "auto" and "M"(Manual).

You also have to be in video mode before you hit those buttons to show the manual settings of video. If your in photo mode and hit those buttons, i believe it takes you into manual mode for photos.
A very enjoyable review, thanks. Presumably you know that the phone can be connected by cable and the WiFi turned off. The camera itself has digital stabilisation of yaw, and because this uses some of the sensor, this is why it won't film 4k.
you mean if somehow one could disable this on-camera 'yaw stabilisation' one might be able to film in 4k?
I don't know if that would be possible in retrospect, but I understand that the sensor is capable of 4K

You did a really nice job with this!!!! It's was far more than the usual review and I appreciated the little "hack" to start filming before a palm-launch. Seeing the results it seems it might be possible to change that in firmware. The idea of walking it along a tight area in tripod mode was a great tip. Thanks so much.

I just got my Spark 2 days ago. I already own a Phantom 3 but i definitely have to get accustomed to the battery life! On the first day the thing suddenly wanted to rush to the base that i had left some time ago.
I tried to cut the sequence and that ended with the drone hitting the trees in 25mtrs/80ft height, shredding leaves and falling down.
The drone fell on earth, the battery was ripped off but nothing really happened. It´s still in almost pristine conditions... well done DJI and I REALLY have to look up tutorials like yours ;-)

6:36 Get the $7.99 OTG cable from your local electronics store (got mine at Best Buy) or use the one which comes with the Mavic. Makes a world of a difference.. actually can increase your range, and the video won't cut out.
Oh my god, thank god I saw your vimeo link, cause i was thinking all the time "man, that quality sucks a little". But on vimeo it really is something else. I think is good quality and price, and really thinking to get it. Thank you Philip for the review, very useful.
I wouldn't be surprised if they release a Spark Advance where it will have higher bitrates, a larger batteries, profiles, and DNG. I prefer the Spark because it just seems more robust and simply cheaper so I could take some risks when flying it similar to what he did here in flying in tight spots. I also don't like the Mavic's need for a gimbal guard and cover, quite a small inconvenience (though I could purchase those dark gimbal covers to be used a camera hood)

for the price your definitely getting a great quality drone. its not a professional drone but not far from it. Fun little thing to fly battery life is decent for size an capabilities. Range is very nice and the otg cable helps with video feed interference.
Nice drone but for me, I would rather just pay abit more for a Mavic with Fly more pack. More features, more camera capability, more features on the controller. This is a great starter drone but the price is too hefty right now.
