How to Simplify the Square Root of a Non Square Number

  • 👉 Learn how to find the square root of a number. To find the square root of a number, we identify whether that number which we want to find its square root is a perfect square. This is done by identifying a number which when raised to the 2nd power gives the number which we want to find its square root. If there exists such a number, then the number is the required square root. If the number which we want to find its square root is not a perfect square, we express the number as a product of the largest perfect square factor of the number. Then, the required square root is the square root of the largest square root factor together with the other factor of the number (which we want to find its square root) left as a radical number.

    • @brianmclogan

Toby, it is not pointless, most teachers don't ask it to be totally solved with an exact answer. Anyways, if you still want to know how to, there is an almost exact way of doing it without calculator, check this video, it is a math trick (let's say):

From 1:33 - 1:50 is a perfect example of whats wrong with every math class... you didn't explain anything, you just wrote (to beginners) seemingly random numbers on the board without explain how you got there...

There is a formula to find the square root of such numbers. Let's say v24=x. The closest square number is 25 =y
    (x+y):(2×Vy)=(24+25):(2×5)=49:10=4.9
So square root of 24 is approximately 4.9

You forgot to explain why you do this. What's the point? What's wrong with √24 as is? On a calculator, it's less input to use enter 24 then √. If you go through this thing you're doing, you now have more to input and compute. Please justify the use of the term "simplify", because √24 is simpler to deal with. As far as estimating in your head, I know √24 is close to √25, so it's a little less than 5. Estimating 2√6 in your head is actually harder. So, again, what's the advantage of the thing you're teaching here?
