Hidden secret under a motorway

  • For this cycle I decided to head out East along
Alexander parade from Townhead to Edinburgh road. At the start of Edinburgh road I talk a bit about some exciting plans to extend and vastly improve Hogarth park at Haghill creating a path for walking wheeling and cycling that stretches up towards the M8 motorway at Blackhill. Then I head along Edinburgh road (A8) this used to be the main road into Glasgow from the east and has 3 lanes each way so could house a cycle lane or have traffic reintroduced. Stopping at the Baillieston interchange to get some ariel shots and look to the exposed part of the Monkland canal at Bargeddie and Coatbridge.
Having just experienced a horrendous close pass from a land rover I decide to stay as off road as possible on the NCNR75
When I get to the canal its so peaceful and quiet and lots of people are out enjoying and using this great space. From here I point out how good it would be if this canal still went all the way into Glasgow and that it is still active and runs under the M8 motorway. How awesome and ambitious would it be if one day the motorway was removed and the canal brought back as a valuable space for recreation and wildlife.
The great thing about staying off road is that I experience a whole new unexplored part of the cycle network that makes this great day even more enjoyable. Nothing better than exploring a new route then after a while popping out at a place you recognize.
From following the path of what was once the Monkland canal I the go up and onto an old railway line that was reproposed as part of route 75 and follow it all the way to Airdrie then Plains from here I follow the route close to Harthill then head back to Glasgow.
This was the first proper ay where I felt like the spring is here and it was warmer. Looking forward to full days out and not freezing when trying to set up shots.

Great video, I ride this route a fair bit, the stretch of canal path from Sykeside to Calderbank is nice.

    Absolutely loving your videos.
The few times I’ve ventured out to the Monklands canal, I’ve took the longer route along the clyde, got vaguely lost around Cambuslang and generally got to that wee new housing estate before Drumpelier park after getting lost somewhere in Lanarkshire.
As I’m 5 mins away from Port Dundas I too would love it if we still had that canal all the way to Airdrie.
Got as far as Armadale a couple of years back, but I usually cheat and get the train back.
Keep up the great work. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the nice comment. Went on this route from Cambuslang a few years ago and I didn’t enjoy that part and felt like it took ages to get to the bit where the showcase cinema is. Nothing wrong with getting the train back as I’ve done it a few times myself 😁

I love seeing places so close to home, hailing as I do from Dumbarton I’ve spent a LOT of time in Glesga
Another thing I miss: people saying hello to each other. I now live in Livi and am in Edinburgh far more than Glasgow and the only conversation I’ve had with a stranger was from a Weegie from Springburn
You say ‘hello’ to someone here and they look at you as if you’ve said ‘excuse me, could I eat your first born?’

Had this experience when cycling down the Forth. Actually said a similar thing to the camera but it didn’t make the video as it contained lots of swearing.

I really enjoyed that. I've never ventured west of Drumgelloch on the 75 so the route through Coatbridge and the stuff about the Monkland Canal was interesting.

I don’t know if you saw it but there was a really interesting program on last year about the Monklands Canal can’t remember what it was called but Country File did a piece on it too. That and the Crinan are the only ones I haven’t done. Did all the rest last year for the Canals Challenge.
Another great vid and loving the drone shots
