Rick's first hit, and an awesome one, at that, both musically and lyrically. Thanks for the fabulous memories of a simpler, less complicated time. Bring back t hose days, please
He came walking up to me at a Promotion at Musicland in Mpls. in 1972... Told me his Name and asked me if I would like a Signed 45 with this song on it... I still have it...
my mother worked in the record dept of Korvettes in 1972 in NJ. he came in & asked how his album was doing if it was selling, she had no idea it was him as he didn't introduce himself as anyone. when he left she realized he was the same guy on the album. she always told that story. she passed away 2 yrs ago, when this video popped up in my song playlist I immed. thought of her & this story.
A very interesting song, seeing as how Rick has been suffering from depression nearly all of his life and attempted suicide at 17 (the noose didn't hold and he fell). I think that this song comes from a very good, optimistic place in his heart that may have kept Rick alive all these years, despite his still ongoing depression.
I strongly agree with you. I'm a fan of his and I've gotten to meet him on a couple of occasions and seen him about 6 or 7 times over the past several years. Really nice guy. I can tell he's dedicated to showbiz and performing music, as he's been at it for the last 40-50 years. I also battle with depression and have a somewhat complex mental health diagnosis. I guess you could say that we have that in common. As far as I know, keeping busy, making music, and being as optimistic as you can possibly be, attribute to an overall positive take on life. I think we all need as much positivity as possible, given the world we live in. To me, musically, Rick is a success story that shows me you can triumph over your own issues and negativity, whatever they may be. I LOVE "Speak To The Sky" and it's message. P.S. Rick has a new album coming out, "Automatic", in early August. I'm going to see him again a few days before it releases, in my home state of MN. I can't wait!!!!!
Yeah, well, you never really get past depression, you just learn to deal with it better. And it's way easier without all the drugs, they just make you feel worse.
Wow. Just. Wow. Stumbled upon this. Remember from my junior year in HS, Loved this song. Sang it ad nauseum back in the day. Loved Rick Springfield. Talking to the Lord and the world will look better than before. YES!
When I was young I heard he wrote this when his dad was sick and his dad got better my dad didn't die till I was almost 50 I speak to him in the sky almost every day
Wow !!!! So cute !!! I saw him not long ago--he is still so awesome!!! Looks & sounds great & so much energy!!! Loved that he came back on General Hospital!! It was great!!
Check out his songs with Zoot before this. Evil Child, The Freak, Strange Things, Turn Your Head, Flying. And their arrangements of Eleanor Rigby and I'm Only Sleeping.
Rick looks like such a boy here. I respect his song for the time it was great. He is so much more mature now. His music has so evolved, he gets so much better as he ages. Long Live Rick!!!! He is Awesome
Who remembers Rick Springfield (briefly) as Zak, Apollo's younger brother who was killed by the Cylons in the first episode of the original Battlestar Galactica?
I prefer this live version to the one on the actual album on which it was released. It sounds better with Rick's guitar solo rather than the monotonous repetitive tuba on the recorded version. I think Rick is always at his best while performing live. Not to mention he looks like a doll in this video. So cute. I love this video, I watch it over and over lol. Thanks for posting it.
Mission: Magic! is an animated cartoon starring pop singer and musician Rick Springfield. It was produced by Filmation, and was a spin off of the television cartoon show, 'The Brady Kids'. Although only 16 episodes were ever produced, it aired on the US television network ABC weekly on the Saturday morning lineup from from 1973 through 1975. It was also shown on Australian television.
This was the very first song I heard from Rick Springfield. It was on a K-Tel or Ronco 33 1/3 vinyl Long Play Stereo Record Album in early 70's. Funny thing ....I STILL own the album and still know and love this song. These albums usually had 22 artists of different genres or styles on them. It's how my music interest developed so diverse and eclectic.
I heard it on the same place. The album I had was called ‘Believe in Music’ and it was K-Tel… that was the first album I ever remember listening to. It was my sisters. Seems like 100 years ago, wow.
I was at some casino in Valley Forge around 6 years ago where he was performing, just a coincidence. My waitress in the coffee shop there asked me if I was there for the concert and told me she was so excited to go see Rick Springfield. I told her with a straight face that I have really bad news for you...she looked concerned, and then I told her "I am Rick Springfield." The look of utter disappointment that flashed across her face makes me laugh remembering it. I busted out laughing, so did she and a couple of the other waitresses. They all called me Rick the rest of the couple days I was there. Maybe it is one of those you had to be there moments but it was just a fun moment. Edit: the casino may have been in the Poconos. I remember it was in Pennsylvania but I don't remember which one it was
Love this song and I had a huge crush on Rick. He was appearing on a music program called GTK which meant getting to know I never missed it and shortly after that came Happening 70
Rick wrote this song for his mom because she asked him if he could write a happy song, since most of the stuff he wrote about was about depression and love triads. He is a talent like no other. I am so happy for him and his love for music and that he is still doing it to this day and sounds exactly the same as he did here. 🫶🏻
@punchcar This song was on the flip side of a 45 record I had back when I was about 9 years old. I simply love it and will never forget this! I use to harmonize with my sisters to it. God Bless!
When I was a kid GTK was on at the same time as Lost In Space and my older brother would always change the channel five mins from the end of the Lost I Space episode so he could watch the GTL featured artist
I never thought I'd see video of that song again!! Thank you! Does anyone remember the Saturday morning cartoon ca. 1973-74? Lots of plaid bellbottoms from what I remember... that would be a treat to see, too!
I have no memory of this song from 1971. I heard this cool song on HD oldies radio for the first time a few days ago. I came to this site to see if it is the same Rick Springfield from the 80s. Sure 'nuff it's him.
On this day in 1972 {September 16th} Rick Springfield performed "Speak to the Sky" on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand... One month earlier on August 5th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #14 and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #6 in his native Australia and #10 in Canada... R.I.P. M. Clark...
You jerks out there, he wrote this during his dad's rehab from Brain damage after a ruptured ulcer in his stomach that was attached to an artery. It shows a lot of heart.
I really like this version. I bought his "Beginnings" album when it came out and it had some awesome stuff on it. Mother Can You Carry Me? was great and The Unhappy Ending (Lead Me On) was truly amazing (though it was terribly sad.) BTW-Thanks for posting !!!
I have been at death's door twice, ruptured appendix 30 hrs before the dr operated (Christmas day 1966 :gangrene & 2020: cellulitis (5 ozs of nasty yellow stuff on the way to stop my heart) & thru the grace of God I survived. may you never need prayer & a miracle my friend.
i survived major open heart surgery in july 2019, aortic valve replacement & double by pass. as a fellow atheist i can assure you and b bb that the grace of god and prayer had nothing to do with it.
Hopefully, Rick Springfield will be teaming up with Beeb Birtles and Rick Brewer from the original ZOOT Band and Russell Morris, honouring Darrly Cotton, touring Australia in November 2020 - fingers crossed!
I remember that show!! You're the first person I've seen that remember that show. I was beginning to wonder if I had imagined it - I couldnt' remember the name of it. :) Wow - now I know what to put in the search field. Thanks for sharing. :)
Yes By 1971, Rick no longer wanted to dress in pink the uniform that Zoot wore and became a solo artist, Speak to the Sky was his first Solo Album and single.
Izzy Foreal ( then Peter Knox ) recorded this video with Rick Springfield. Dave the Bloke Ovenden is on Drums. They were in there to do their own recording with perhaps Johnny and the Ringworms or the THIRD UNION BAND. They did that. On ABC. GTK - Getting to Know.
Rick's first hit, and an awesome one, at that, both musically and lyrically. Thanks for the fabulous memories of a simpler, less complicated time. Bring back t hose days, please

This is the song that put Springfield on the map all those years ago. And it's still one of his best!
Rick is still performing today. I love all his music.
Wow. Just. Wow. Stumbled upon this. Remember from my junior year in HS, Loved this song. Sang it ad nauseum back in the day. Loved Rick Springfield. Talking to the Lord and the world will look better than before. YES!

I remember this from a K-Tel album as a kid. Great tune. Peace. :)

Wow !!!! So cute !!! I saw him not long ago--he is still so awesome!!! Looks & sounds great & so much energy!!! Loved that he came back on General Hospital!! It was great!!

Rick was so young and beautiful. I am glad that he is still sharing his music.
I love it! I wish Rick would release a Greatest Hits album that would feature his early work as well as his '80s stuff!
Awsome SONG!!!! FAN SINCE
Early seventies brought me here when I stumbled upon this by the rock doc🎼🎵🎵🎵🎷🎸🎹📻📻📻
Super rare footage of Rick at age 22! Really a treat for us fans that go way back. Thanks for this!!

good song!
What fascinates me is that Rick Springfield looked a lot older in 1985 than he does now. He must have a great plastic surgeon.
Remember him as Dr. Noah Drake on Days of our lives.
It was Dr. Noah Drake from the soap General Hospital in 1981
You have an excellent memory
I think it was called Mission Magic.
Ah, the good old days!
