    I mean from a sales perspective it makes total sense. Why would any manufacturer/company want a previous gen device that comes in cheaper cannibalizing the sales of their current gen? Plus I'm sure Google doesn't want to be constantly asked why the 7/OG Fold series can't support this or won't get that...stacking their portfolio for their AI push I would say.

    • @TomTheCleric
      @TomTheCleric 26 дней назад +2

      Acknowledgement of that AI pivot/stack could be handled in a better way, perhaps like Samsung does by offering $1200 trade-in for their last gen fold and fairly inflated values for previous their previous gen Folds. That's how you keep customers. To me that's a clear signal to their customer base that they want our business.

    Google should give you a pro 9 fold to review. You are the only one who reviews google phones like a man in the street, the way real people use them rather than showing how knowledgeable you are about technical details.

    OG Fold owner since launch - I’m sticking with my baby until the cracks come down. The small hand factor that extends into landscape is entirely unique and is exactly what i want. Yes,it’s heavy and the screen isn’t very bright in the texas sun, but i love it and the new Fold is just a big slab phone

    The reason people doesn't discuss much about Samsung is because the track record of support of the older model for Samsung is quite good. Samsung even often eventually roll out features to the older model.

      AT&T should still support the P9FP if it's unlocked like any phone. The only difference is you can't get one directly from AT&T. Now if AT&T blacklists it outright then that's just bad.

    As someone who went from a pixel 4 to a pixel fold, I have to say that i'm going to ride this til the wheels fall off. If we get 2 more years of updates and THATS when we bail, you're looking as at least one more generation of foldable to skip.

      I mean we don't have all the sales figures etc so it could be that overall the OG fold was seen as failure sales wise. We know you cant do the same thing and expect different results. Ultimately foldables will reach a form factor that is considered the 'best'. If the passport style was popular we would still see Chinese manufacturers making that form.

    The OG Pixel Fold will always be unique. The only downside really is that it's heavy. I'm not planning to upgrade to the 9 Pro Fold as I got the Z Fold 6 to replace my folding needs. I'm getting the 9 Pro XL instead cause I want the best cameras that Google could offer. Plus I want all the features as well as the Fold got left behind real quick.

    This is nothing new, actually it's new for me for Google to keep phones in their store longer than a year, when I bought my Pixel 6 a few years ago it was common knowledge that as soon as the new modell was released, the older modell would stop being made and sold on the site, so they could focus producing the new modell instead.
    The fact that Pixel 8 is still available is really surprising for me.
    Just because they're no longer available for purchase doesn't mean they'll no longer get updates. My Pixel 6 got software updates for 3 years despite not being on the site for sale for more than the first year.

    When I went to trade in my pixel fold for the pixel 9 pro fold... It wasn't an option though they had all the Pixel 6,7,8s etc... But no Fold. Which when you pay 2000 dollars (higher storage) is frustrating. Now hearing they may abandon it. Knowing I didn't get the pixel 8 features, the G3, better cameras etc etc makes the whole 2000 dollar phone brutal and yet I just bought another one. I have bought every single pixel generation going back to Nexus through all the pixels. I do love my current Fold overall and I'm excited about the new one but I'm disappointed in how Google always treats us

  • @DanielCardenas1

    The biggest reasons is the device wasn't durable. There was something like an average of 1.8 returns for each phone purchased. Mine was returned 3 times for warranty repair. The protective screen in the middle kept lifting up. The device wasn't profitable with such a high return rate.

  • @sparky6757
    @sparky6757 26 дней назад +2

    I've never really understood keeping an older model of any phone available new. It can't be that much cheaper to produce than the new model, right? I mean, the majority of the components are always the same or nearly the same anymore, maybe they save a little on the older chip (_is it_ even cheaper to manufacture an older chip?), and as a result, buying an older phone usually only saves you like a hundred bucks.
    Now, for some people, a hundred bucks is a big deal, even on a device you'll use for years. I get that. But if you're on a tight budget, you're *much* better off buying used or refurbished - a Pixel 8 is currently $600 new, $424 renewed (Amazon), $346 used (Swappa). Speaking from experience, Amazon Renwed products and secondhand products are almost as good as brand new for a fraction of the price.
    For other people, the idea that a device has never been used by someone else is a big deal. I understand that too, but if you can afford to be concerned about that, you can afford another hundred bucks for the newest. If you're scraping by on your bills and choose to buy a brand-new phone, your priorities are out of order.

    I remember having the Nexus 7 tablet, built by ASUS. It's last update was the new Android version and it bricked the device. ASUS had abandoned it and provided no updates nor any warning nor any assistance once it happened. My favourite tablet was a black glass coaster. That is what happens when a device is dropped from support. At some point you will have a folding black glass coaster.
    That one thing put me off getting another Google device for a very long time, right up till now in fact. I haven't bought anything from ASUS either.

  • @KrisRogos
    @KrisRogos 26 дней назад +1

    This was very expected.
    The original Fold was effectively Pixel 7 Pro Fold in style, cameras and CPU. Then, they skipped a generation. Now everything is on the 9th generation, so the 8th gets discounted, and the 7th gets discontinued. If you are a big fan of the form factor, you probably have a few months left while stocks last at some retailers, but as the 7-year promise didn't start until Pixel 8, Google owes OG Fold owners nothing more than basic Android 15 and 16 support.

Now about the new phones, I bring my Fold every day along with my iPhone and use it more but somehow I don't open the phone to take advantage of the larger display it's actually upsetting that I'm not using it the way it should be used. what is more important is that Pixels finally enter the ..world-wide..er stores, which never made sense, to only sell devices in couple EU countries. Besides like UK, Germany and 2-3 other countries, all Google HW products were grey imports. That's why you average Pixel A phone was attacking the price of base iphone or Galaxy S device. Now they are establishing official supplier contracts with big chain stores, coming in with Samsung level buyback programs, so maybe they want to go for it, finally, to grab some relevant market share.

That's why last year they were giving the Fold away for $900 with no trade-in required which was crazy. This is what I did and one year later I wasn't planning to get the Fold 2 cause I already knew I wanted the Z Fold 6 instead which I now currently have. About the aspect ratio, one stupid behaviour that I've started noticing with updated Google apps is that they show the two panels vertically EVEN IF you are holding the tablet vertically!!! So for example if you get your tablet and hold it vertically and open for example Google messages, you get two very narrow side by side views.. Which should not be the case imho... It should determine whether to show the side menu or not based on the orientation I would argue, not JUST the tablet DPI

    On the European Google Pixel page, the Pixel 9 pro fold is also not for sale and cannot be seen on the page. In Estonia, you can only buy pixel 9, 9 pro, 9 pro XL with pre-order, 9 pro xl 256gb costs 1239 eur, 512Ggb 1339 eur, 1 TB 1469 eur, this is with pre-order, the regular price of 1 TB is otherwise 1729 eur after pre-order. Nowhere is there even a mention of the Pixel 9 pro fold. After all, the pixel 9 fold will probably go on sale much later, although in Estonia, for example, this fold has never been sold in particular. There are also some discounts if you pre-order a phone from the pixel 9 series, then you can get 200 euros for the older pixel phone, plus the price of the replacement phone will also go down. And as you can see, the pixel 9 fold, if it goes on sale at all, it probably doesn't have a pre-order, you have to buy it at full price and it's very expensive in Estonia. You can't buy the previous google pixel fold from the European google page either! I really wanted to try the first pixel phone and just the fold phone, and I was thinking of buying the new 9 pro fold, but now I don't know, because it comes at full price, if it comes at all, and it's really difficult to buy a phone in Estonia elsewhere. Bit of a disappointing for those of us who have a pixel fold. So unfair. I mean even apple provide more support for there iPhones.

    Googles problem wasn't form factor. I say it the tensor chip. 9 pro foled is just a copy. Please go back to pixel fold and update it and give me a 8 gen 3. I'll buy.

    The media is kinda being biased on this. Samsung takes down the old device immediately upon release and Google has done this also. It not a big deal for samsung. Not a big deal for google

    6:56 That's good business to discontinue the Pixel fold because it didn't achieve the attraction that it meant to get. And the new Pixel 9 Pro fold is going on target to garner the market share that it deserves. Whenever a product perform horribly it doesn't deserve to be continue. 😎💯💪🏾👍🏾

    OG Pixel Fold is awful. Terrible aspect ratio and doesn't even fold flat.
