- For 1.5 million years, African elephants have walked the continent of Africa. Their deep wisdom and the secure attachments that begin the minute a newborn arrives have been passed down through countless generations. Since 1991, Stephen Gianotti has had the privilege to be up close and personal with the African elephant as a student of their wisdom, an admirer of their generosity, and an advocate for their sustainable survival. His talk shares three lessons from the African elephant and three challenging questions that inform and could alter the course of our lives and, quite possibly, humanity.
Stephen Gianotti is the founder and president of The Woodland Group, an organizational development company based in New Hampshire. He also serves as board chair for the Global Society for Organizational Learning, based in Stockholm. With the exception of spending 15 years in the corporate world, where he was fortunate to travel extensively, Stephen has lived in New Hampshire all of his life. Stephen was the official Zoom safari
guide for www.elephanthavens.org Botswana’s first and only elephant rescue sanctuary, sharing the majesty and the mystery of the African elephant with thousands of people around the world. Africa occupies a very special place in Stephen’s soul.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
You neglected to mention humans are mostly dominated by patriarchy which disregards the balance of nature. Elephants are a matriarchy which is compassionate and nurturing.
Thank you for your joy and love of country, nature and especially elephants. Beautifully done.
Stephen, great job!!👏 👏 👏 your talk moved and inspired me☺️I also loved watching you find moments of joy throughout your talk. Thank you for sharing your powerful and inspirational message with the world 🙏🏼🐘
Dear Deep Silence, Thank you for the compliment. There is so much joy in being with the African Elephant. I am truly blessed to have had these experiences.
I love and admire African elephants and worry about their continued existence. Thank you for this video.
Dear Ceerads, We all should be worried about the African Elephant's existence. That is why we need to spread the word. You can help by sharing this video to as many people as you think might be interested. Thank you for caring and thank you for helping.
the best Ted speech I have ever listened to so far,
Dear Stephen, Watching at my desk, I instinctively applauded at the end of the video although I was alone. What a powerful message, environmental and human approach that dances between learning from the past and forward-thinking. Thank you for sharing and reminding us on what is really important.
Dear Natasha, I can imagine you at your desk doing this and this brings a huge smile to my face and warms my heart. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this fascinating insight into the connection with African elephants and inspiring TEDx talk. It's inspiring to think about the deep wisdom and generational bonds that these magnificent creatures have nurtured over the course of millions of years on the African continent. Your journey of being a student of their wisdom, an admirer of their generosity, and an advocate for their sustainable survival is commendable. The time you have taken to not only understand these magnificent creatures but also to be a part of the Global Society for Organizational Learning shows your commitment to the betterment of both nature and society. Thank you for sharing this remarkable story.

Well presented, interesting content. Thank you for sharing this powerful and inspiring message. Connection ❤️ I admire what you do for the African Elephants!! Beautiful animals with so much to teach us if we only quiet down and listen.
Wonderful presentation, Mr. Gianotti! I was transported from my living room sofa to the wilds of Africa during your talk. What wonderful, gentle, sensitive creatures these are. We owe it to future generations to do whatever we can to protect them. And loved the part about how you and your wife bonded over pachyderms. I’m suspect she shares your passion for these beautiful creatures. Thank you for educating me!
Yes, there is nothing like bonding over a pachyderm. As you know.
Thank you for the beautiful speech

They ARE beautiful to watch and beautiful to know that they are around. Let us hope that will be the case for another 1.5 million years. Please share.
Much needed in today's world where, as Mr. Gianotti reminds us we get a "daily diet of disgust."
Yes, our daily diet of disquiet has impact in us. Hopefully we can mitigate the impact intentionally.
Regards,
sg
Love it....😍
Well done Steve! Lovely story, nice message and learning ! Cheers
🐘 you could learn alot from animals. 😊
So true!!
Beautiful presentation, Stephen! Exploring our similarities with other species, not just through our very similar DNA structure, but from our practices that are usually identified as human, but are common across so many species. The elephants are amazing creatures, as are so many other species. The system intelligence built into our inter-species relationships are just so misunderstood. Thank you!
Dear Garrett, please know I appreciate your generosity of words. These as such magnificent beings.
Wonderfully inspiring presentation Stephen, transporting us to a different space and time. Enjoyed our time singing with the Portsmouth Men’s Chorus!
Wow! Portsmouth Mens Chorus! Now that takes me back. May I ask your name?
Very beautiful 🐘
"We"
Yes, I think civil society had drifted away fro. The concept of “We” or “Us” and very focused on “Me First” and in some cases, “Me only”
Yes please ❤
I hope you liked it.

Smiling on ear.
And this make me smile as well!
Beautiful. The quiet. That's why living in cities is so unhealthy for us. It's not a natural environment.
I gotta go all the way to the Ritz Carlton for a mud bath??? Hm... There must be something closer and cheaper😂👏 there must be. I'll look into it.
Dear Liberty, perhaps a long warm bath will suffice?
it didn't cross their mind they could adopt?
Elephants are good creature.but human here is most dangerous creature.
The relationship between humans and African Elephants has been a tenuous one at best.
