Anyone who, like me, ever went to any of Debbie Gibson's early live shows between the fall of 1987 and the summer of '88 will remember "Staying Together" as her opening song. And it was the kind of opener that set the tone for all the spunk and creativity that Debbie offered back then.
She said her inspiration for this song was Motown, which you can clearly hear in this version. Now, I can’t un-hear it when I listen to the original track.
Honestly Debbie was basically doing Modern Motown using synthesizers and drum machines for her first two albums instead of contemporary 80s pop -- the song structures and production choices have very little in common with what else was on the radio at the time.

Better than the original! Loooooove this! :)
