When it was first announced, I didn't think too much of it. Sure I was worried they may ruin the way Christina Ricci portrayed Wednesday but after watching it, I'm just amazed how Jenna Ortega perfects every role she's in. I think I might like her version of Wednesday more than the 90s.

I grew up with The Munsters that came from the 1960s. And then watched The Munsters Today during the 1980s. The Munsters is written more like a typical sitcom. More slapstick. Herman is like Homer Simpson. Fred Gwynne was my fav.
Love the Herman Munster laugh. He was such a klutz but a loveable klutz. Grandpa Munster was always so endearing. The Addams is written more with satire. While the Munsters consist of Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, and Werewolf, the more morbid and psychotic family are the Addams. Wednesday was trained as a child to swim next to sharks.
I wasn't aware of the 1930s comic strip and 1960s sitcom of the Addams Family. I wasn't aware of this franchise until the 1991 and 1993 films which I saw with my family in the theater. Then the theme song with the snapping fingers got stuck in my head. If I had to choose which is the better IP, it's the Addams. While the Munsters had the better intro song, the Addams have the more interesting characters.

The Addams still have Thing, Uncle Fester, Lurch, and Cousin Itt. But I still love me The Munsters although I didn't watch that Rob Zombie film from last year because the trailer looked gawd awful. The Addams is the better franchise because it has the more interesting characters and that's why it has more revivals. Can I love both The Addams Family and The Munsters? Yes I can and yes I will.
People may think I'm hating on Christina Ricci if I say Jenna Ortega is a better Wednesday. I'm not. I love Christina Ricci! Had a crush on her for 30 years. We're close to the same age born in the same year (1980) and so many of my classmates had the hots for her when we were still in middle school. Yeah, she has a big forehead like Mena Suvari but we don't care! I'll always idolize her.
Christina was hot af when she was in Black Snake Moan. She's the reason why I love Wednesday. I just think Jenna did it better because Lisa Loring and Christina Ricci portrayed younger versions of Wednesday because they were still very young. Lisa was 6. Christina was 10 when she filmed the 1991 film. Jenna did it better being she's 20 and she portrayed it in a way by not trying to rip-off Christina's.
I'm aware Luis Guzman isn't a popular casting choice, but in the comic strip, he is supposed to be short and pudgy. I guess Raul Julia portrayed Gomez with so much charisma, it's hard to look at Luis Guzman the same way thinking Catherine Zeta-Jones' Morticia fell for this guy. I'm not a fan of Luis Guzman as Gomez either but I can live with it.
Guzman felt miscast in The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) too but Luis must have a great agent if he can land roles for Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Traffic. I think Johnny Depp, Oscar Isaac, or Pedro Pascal would've portrayed a better Gomez. Could've aged up the latter two but I guess Tim Burton wanted more comic accuracy. Catherine is actually Welsh but she can portray Latina as seen in Zorro.
The 1960s Gomez, John Astin, is still alive, BTW. One of Sean Astin's dads. Hence, why Sean did such a great job as Bob in Stranger Things S2. A tribute to all the dads he's close with. Sean Astin is like the best son you can ever have if he's close with the 3 men he considers his dads. So understanding and caring like Bob. His mother, Patty Duke, must be smiling from above.

TBH, I think Fred Armisen had a better Uncle Fester. I thought Christopher Lloyd's was a little too much. Remember, he had amnesia for most of that first film and was brainwashed. Fred's version showed more emotion. But I'll still have Christopher slightly ahead because we only got 1 episode from Fred. My apologies to Jackie Coogan who portrayed the crying child in The Kid (1921) with Charlie Chaplin. It's only 1990s vs. 2020s since I didn't really watch the 1960s Addams Family.

Lurch, Cousin Itt, and Thing I won't rank but I will say the Netflix version of Thing is the best one yet. So helpful to Wednesday and actually quite caring and thoughtful. Wanted Wednesday to have a surprise happy birthday. This is just a hand who can't speak and he's a better character than most characters in that school. And I do refer to Thing as a he/him since that's a male's hand.
With Pugley, I've always felt indifferent. He's just there the way Marilyn Munster was just there. I went with the 90s Pugley actor for all the hijinks he did. The 2022 version was just kinda meh. Morticia and Wednesday have always been the most interesting ones for me. Christina Ricci even dressed up as Morticia. I like Lily Munster too, but Morticia just has this cool goth mom swag about her.
I thought Anjelica Huston portrayed Morticia to perfection. Shame she got old and fat like Kathleen Turner and Kelly McGillis. Since Anjelica did The Witches (1990), she was perfect to portray Morticia. I do hope she and Lisa Loring makes a cameo for Season 2.
Yvonne De Carlo, OG Lily Munster, was a very beautiful woman. Bride of Frankenstein. Same with Carolyn Jones, OG Morticia, whom the 64-year-old Lisa Loring (OG Wednesday) is starting to look like. For The Munsters, it's pretty much every actor from the 1960s sitcom is my favorite. I don't recall too much from The Munsters Today and never watched the late-90s TV revival of The Addams Family.
Jenna Ortega's Wednesday is the G.O.A.T Addams. She took Wednesday to another level that I'm not sure will be surpassed in 30 years. She's a superhero/super agent like a Black Widow and she's an experienced archer/sharpshooter like Kate Bishop. She builds contraptions. She's multilingual. She's a cellist and author. She fights for the underdogs and outcasts. She's a badass. She's the G.O.A.T.

I wouldn't even be opposed to a mockumentary-style filming (a la Modern Family) ehehehe

As a lifelong Addams Family fan I am so grateful she is playing Wednesday and is so protective of the character and demands the writers stay true to the character and its lore. It was epic that she told the writers "no, that is not how Wednesday would act and she would never say that", she has saved Wednesday from current day Hollywood idiocy.

true this is the first show in a while were i couldn't tell who was the bad guy instantly i never knew until the reveal tho it was hinted and the dude was on my suspect list when they said the hyde was artistic in nature i was locked into that one dude obviously cause the real hyde never showed that (that was one of my 2 Problems with the show that he didn't match the description and that Wednesday randomly did that fencing match there was no reason for it) but yeah good show actually interesting story that isn't easy to figure out

Jenna is such a wonderful actress; she has a subtlety of expression that absolutely glows. All the actors on this show are great, but Jenna is definitely the one that stands out as a future A-lister.
To be fair, other than Christina, Luis, Catherine, and Gwendoline, I think Jenna has more acting history when compared to the cast mates that are at least around her age so, I think they too have a chance to become A-lister’s
@@lifegoeson1007 : The one who plays her roommate maybe--and of course the adult roles are all first rate actors--they're all obviously skilled and experienced actors, but as an actor I can say Jenna has that top actor ability to create an original character. Even though she didn't create the role, she has certainly reinvented it. Wednesday isn't based on the old series much at all outside the first episode.
Most actors, even A-list, typically play alternate versions of ourselves. Tom Cruise for example is into motorcycles and climbing. He's basically a stunt man, like Jackie Chan; he's a great actor of course, but he's not on the level of Johnny Depp or Tilda Swinton.

I watched Wednesday because my daughter invited me to do so. I am not a fan of Hollywood movies or shows but I come to love the story and the casts, especially Wednesday and Enid.

@@twentyonetortas5921 I was twelve. There's probably episodes on RUclips but I've never looked. The movie with Angelica and Raul was much more like the tv show. The tv show with John Astin and Caroline Jones was a total comedy as was the movie. Wednesday, while having comedic overtones, is much more serious. I would say it even goes beyond being a 'dark comedy' to a comedic drama.

Whether it was a marketing/PR team, just a couple of folks, or even just a single person, the thought to in essence break the fourth wall by referencing the not-so-subtle dance trend is a stroke of genius. Not only is it entertaining to acknowledge your fanbase in such a way, it feels aligned with Wednesday's veneer, steer into the skid no matter what.

Not all of them. I didn't care for their casting choices for Morticia and Gomez. Gomez, eh. Morticia though, not even close. Two of her defining traits are her long, slender figure, and tendriled hobble dress. These are features every single Morticia has had up until now. They gave us an average sized woman in a mermaid dress.
Oh yeah and her makeup, she looks more like an angsty teenager than Wednesday does.

This is the best series I've seen recently and not because it's popular and everyone watches it, but it's just very invested with an immersive story that made the plot not boring at all.
Thanks to Tim Burton the director who created a wonderful work and of course to the excellent cast and Netflix!

Me too! I wasn’t originally going to watch it but I had a flight to Japan so I downloaded it and it was so amazing! I was really immersed for sure! I thought that no one could compare to Christina Ricci because she was just amazing as Wednesday in the 90s but Jenna Ortega brought a fresh new look to Wednesday in her own way and I just love it! Shes absolutely amazing. Love the whole vibe too and I hope to see more of the Addams family next season!
