I AM INDONESIAN CHINESE 60 YO, AND THERE WAS CONVAIR 990 GARUDA. BRING BACK MANY BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES FROM THIS VINTAGE CHINESE SONG AND GARUDA INDONESIAN AIRWAYS ❤❤❤❤❤
What a great atmosphere!!! For all of us that we were not born by those years watching these videos makes us wanna go back to these days despite the fact that we didnt have the chance to get a real idea of those days...
absolutely wonderfully incredible ... indelible nostalgic memories of a time better than today ... the legacy of Kai Tak is truly eternal ... Blessings to the many passengers & particularly to the flight crews (brave & brilliant) !!!
❤My trips were twice a year from the UK in the 80s / early 90s in 747s, but still something of this atmosphere remained. I loved every minute of HK, of coming and going through Kai Tak, the food, the people - the whole experience.
Impressive video of Kowloon City. We spent our merry innicent childhood living under the pathway. Really very very noisy when aircrafts decented iver our heads we thought we could touch them.
Flew that approach in a Virgin Atlantic B747 in 1994. Having lived in Boundary St in the 60's it was great to actually do the approach myself and see what the checkerboard fuss was all about.
0:53 I’m Indonesian and my first time to see Garuda landed at Kai Tak on such old golden times, and the checkerboard above the hill is very visible. Thank you for such treasure, this video is time machine.
0:53 Wow, this is the first time, I see video of Garuda Indonesian Airways CV-990.. Usually, I just see the pictures on books or internet.. Thanks for uploading this video..
As a child I lived on the adjacent RAF Kai Tak base in the late 60s. Between the base and the civilian airport were some (Cathay Pacific?) repair hangers. When they tested engines the noise was deafening, incredibly loud. often I would leave the base, walk the long way around to the airport and just spend time on the observation deck. I remember when the first 747 arrived there. People flocked to see it, amazed at it's size, taller than the terminal buildings. The landing flightpath went over the "Stinkys" market area just before reaching the airport. At first it was very disconcerting as the jets came in very low to land, but it's amazing what people can get used to.
My old 1965 passport with a stamped mark of immigration revealed, I rode this Convair 880 from South Korea to Philippines Int’l Airport. Just 6 days ahead of the Beatles coming in 1966 July 3rd. Might have been so terrible in the Airport. The Beatles rode Convair 880 from Kai Tak HongKong however as shown in Esquire magazine photo. The Jet-plane was the fastest after all. I didn’t remember the feel and image of the Jet-plane but the fondness the stewardesses had on me as 6 yrs old boy back then 😊
Ahh remember landing there frequently, late 60s...I have an abiding memory of seeing what seemed like a few yards away, the laundry of the poor souls living in the flats on the approach, and thinking how on earth they they coped with the noise day in day out. It was a hell of an exciting ride I seem to remember. Great days....HK was like a slice of the UK in Asia... really incongruous.... All so magical.
How crazy is it to think...in the middle of a Cold War, people around the world fearful that the nuclear button could be pushed at any time, with half the world missing, either behind the Iron Curtain or the Red one, with China inaccessible...those of us on this side of all that look back on these times as purely magical nonetheless. A time and a place that no longer exists.
We are back in a Cold War now! So we can get THAT feeling back, while being treated like shit on most US based airlines today. We will never have this golden age of travel again
Oh yes.. but back then the nuclear missiles do not have a big range like they do today! Plus, the people back in the 60s and 70s had much more resilience.
Hi @Lyubomir, I'm trying to find the original source of the first 5 seconds of your video to use in a documentary film. Which movie is it from? Thanks so much!
@chinesefilmhistory6530 The original source is the 1964 West German thriller film "Ein Sarg aus Hong Kong" ("Coffin from Hong Kong"), based on the 1962 novel of the same title by James Hadley Chase. Good luck!
I remember well our terrifying departure from Kaitak Airport in 1951! I wrote about it in detail in my book “Hiding in a cave of trunks,” about our family's five generations in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
Oh boy Air India 707 in the beginning.. the time when Air India was a reputed airlines. Since Air India is now privatized I hope it regains its former glory. Cant wait to see Boeing 777 9X and Airbus A350 in Air India colors.
I flew the B 707 (F/O ) , did my training at Pan Am Academy , then trained at Denver United Airlines as Captain DC 8 , later Captain B 767. How would I know , I would end up flying B 767 , B 747 400 and B 777 out of Hong - Kong !!!
I remember well our breathtaking departure from Kaitak in 1951! It left such an impression on me that I wrote about it in detail in my book, “Hiding in a Cave of Trunks,” about my family's five generations in China.
@Semper Anticus really? Are you unhealthy? Look me up- there's lots of info, including a link to my book on Amazon. Title, “ hiding in a cave of trunks.” Then apologize if you’re man enough, which I doubt but I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt this time. Shame on you. Also, I might add, thank you for the opportunity to have free publicity thanks to your remark!
🤣That rich snob at the end of the clip... Love how he ignores everyone. Total Alpha Male. Lyubomir, thanks for adding the great music to go with the clip. I have a TWA 707 in 1:200
He doesn't look that rich to me. That suit and the briefcase both scream "Bargain basement." He's probably some low-level sales rep who's counting the minutes until he can get back to Kansas City or St. Louis.
Kai Tak looks really new in this video, despite already been 40-50 years old at that point. Not as big as itcwas at its closure in 98, nor is the surrounding area(s) as developed as they are today either, giving the impression that it's cleaner and roomier! Great music by the way

Just love this, last two were LH707 and BA707, and, saw a Coronado somewhere in between, absolutely beautiful, mercy for posting!
Oh my this is a sweet video. Absolutely love the street scene at the first few seconds of video.
One of those landing aircraft almost greased their landing gear wheels on the white threshold. Never saw that in any of the modern videos.

Thank you for sharing. What a wonderful memory in the 60s. Life is wonderful !
Wow. Very clear shots of the rare (RR powered) 707-420's! Even a 990!
Love this. Wonderful footage of old Kai Tak, classic 60s jets and really love the music too. Excellent! Thank you for posting.
50s and 60s style music..
PLEASE MAKE ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL VIDEOS LIKE THIS. MANY THX.
SO BEAUTIFUL TO BE FORGOTTEN......

That plane is surely beautiful
Nostalgia..Air India 707 landing at begining of the video❤
Wonderful nostalgic footage from the golden days of jet travel. And I really love the music - Seven Lonely Days sung in Mandarin (?).
The Nostalgia...
Great vid! Amazing quality clips and sound for 1960s-70s!
*Yay, Thanks for hearting!

Great video! Love the BOAC 707. Flew on it to Prestwick from JFK in the early 70's. Also the song is wonderful!

absolutely wonderful, golden hong kong
First landed there in 1995, what an experience!

When Hong Kong was fabulous. Who could forget the unique stench upon landing at Kai Tak?
Nice song!
I like the gentleman disembarking at the end. Kai Tak wobbly feet syndrome wasn't isolated to Kai Tak either.
Nostalgia thanks for sharing👍❤️

Very nice airport!
My grandparents were born in these years but they weren’t in kai tak but they saw these airplanes landing on SFO.
I get goosebumps every time with that Air India 707 approaching cause I'm from India myself
A joke:
How do you know someone on the internet is from India?
Because they will fucking always tell you.

1960s footage, when Boeing 707s were commonly seen and 747 not yet in service!
Oh boy Air India 707 in the beginning.. the time when Air India was a reputed airlines. Since Air India is now privatized I hope it regains its former glory. Cant wait to see Boeing 777 9X and Airbus A350 in Air India colors.
Great to see. That was a dangerous airport.
Great video, thanks for posting. Those jets looked awesome did they not?

❤

Oh that wasn't a soft landing anyway :))

Lufthansa didn't bounce like Air India and Garuda.
👍✨🌅🌹☕☘️
A gleaming Pan Am 707... nothing says the jet-set 1960's more than that!
