  • From a VHS tape recently rediscovered in a dusty basement - this inflight video was made for Cathay Pacific in 1994 by Scott Riseman Lipsey Meade (big:group).
    Look closely for a cameo appearance by British BMX star and MOBO co-founder Andy Ruffell.

    LOL - telecheck and fax check-in! Now with online check-in, it's hard to imagine what things were like back in the 1990s.

      Now things are inverted. Then this 'convenient' check-in method was available only to first/business class passengers whereas economy class had to go through the 'full' check-in procedure. Now especially in Europe, only first/business class passengers get the option to go through a 'full' check-in procedure and economy class passengers are expected to complete most of the check-in remotely or through a kiosk.

      Go to Japan, as of 2020 most businesses still use fax. That's actually one of the big issues with stay-at-home orders during COVID because workers don't have access to fax machines while at home.

      @@Avantime I honestly wonder how Japan was able to advance from the ruins of WW2. They're so rigid and resistant to change! I can't tell you the number of times I've felt like pulling my hair at the rigidity of my Japanese employer.

      @@paololim171 I fly on Alaska Airlines in the U.S. and if you check a bag in (even in Basic Economy) you still have your documents checked at the counter. However, I imagine that soon 90% of airports will have fully automated self-check bags.

    • @tiadaid
      @tiadaid 4 года назад +2

      I would think this is only for Kai Tak, their home airport. Airlines usually have these kind of videos only for their home airports

    • @visionist7
      @visionist7 2 года назад +1

      It wouldn't have surprised me if they had several more of these for important airports like Heathrow. East Asian carriers earned their reputation through thoughtful things like this.
      Now, what would have been really cool is if they turned the inflight magazine in the seat pocket to the side of the language of each passenger before the flight; Mandarin or English. It would required the double language style where you turn the magazine upside down and flip it over and you have another cover in the different language and can then read it as normal. Of course it wouldn't be easy for them to know what language each passenger spoke.

    • @straightpipediesel

      Most airlines of this era would have one video for each major hub or focus city. You can find United's on the FrienldySKy channel.
