House committee holds hearing on antisemitism in public schools

- Leaders from some of the largest U.S. public school districts testified on Wednesday before a House education subcommittee about antisemitism in their schools. Each of the schools have received complaints regarding how they've handled alleged antisemitic incidents. Those testifying were Berkeley Unified Schools Superintendent Ford Morthel of California, New York City School Chancellor David Banks and Montgomery County School Board President Karla Silvestre of Maryland.

These people in Congress, especially those who interrogated the school leaders, have now shown to the world their deep care for justice and their opposition against antisemitism. I completely agree with and support the main takeaway that any forms of hate is unacceptable. Let’s also expect them to do the same and hold accountable those who tolerate racism, sexism, anti-LGBTQ, and any other forms of discrimination against any minority in this country. 👍

You are arguing semantics, which is a form of the "definist logical fallacy" via creating a "persuasive definition" and a "precising definition." Basically, you are creating your own definition of the word "ant1semitism" that contradicts the commonly accepted definition of the word and the definition that is listed in the dictionary--which is that "ant1semitism" means hatred against Jews specifically. The word "ant1semitism" came into usage a couple hundred years ago, and at that time, the root word "semite" only included Jewish people, so therefore, the word "ant1semitism" only came to be used to represent hatred of Jewish people. Today, that usage of the word remains to refer to only jewish people even though in other contexts, the root word "semite" can refer to people inhabiting the larger middle east. We have other words to describe discrimination against other groups, such as "Islamophobia" for example.

It is embarrassing how simplistic the witnesses are being with their answers. Obviously, criticism against the Jewish state isn't inherently antisemitic, but in this case, it mostly is. It's about the number of civilian casualties of the retaliation campaign in Gaza, and it is hypocritical considering no one has been able to do better (or even get close to our civilian-to-terrorist ratio), no one has offered a better solution, no one is willing to take responsibility for #HamasTerrorists future endeavors. All they want for the problem to go away. Well, it's won't. Not without a proper response. Stop putting bandaids on the issue and stop looking the other way. The people of Israel, my family, deserve a missile free existence. My 6 year old deserves to not get shot at. When this stops, when #HamasTerrorists are gone, and the Palestinians recognize my right to life, we can sit down and talk.

Antisemitism is not new. It’s been a thing in the United States forever. Along with racism and xenophobia. Will there being a hearing on racism next week? Will there be a hearing on Islamophobia in two weeks? Being “concerned” now is odd. The selective outrage is odd. I agree with the first congresswoman that spoke. You either condemn hate or you don’t.

Honestly, I would not attend a invitation by Congress. Generally, most members of Congress---especially Elise Stefanik---are not serious about addressing the issue. They conduct these sessions to beat up on schools or administrators they view as "too liberal." The NYC Chancellor rightly said the way out of this is education and not expelling and firing everyone. That is not to suggest people are not held accountable, especially if they post a threat to others. Indeed, many of the people asking provocative questions in a disingenuous manner fully support the GOP nominee in waiting, and someone who has in fact used anti-Jewish statements despite having a Jewish son-in-law and daughter (by conversion) and grandchildren. The previous sessions with college presidents were a clue to this. Stefanik was recorded as being gleeful about one of the college presidents leaving her job, and stated one down more (two) to go. They aren't serious; they want a photo opportunity or a viral moment.
After 911 terrorist attack both muslim & Christian arabs were fearful for their life. Government agencies raided their homes & places of worship & lots of arabs & non Arab Muslims were arrested without any charges were held in detention centers. Muslims were arrested simply because being Muslims, many lost their jobs & many never find jobs. And when this taking place there was not a single congressional hearing. Congress hypocrisy has no bounds. We as Americans can criticize our government, lawmakers and the president then media call it free speech but when we criticize Israelis inhuman policies their occupation of land that does not belong to them then the same media calls it antisemitism .
