I'm still working out my own ranking, because it has been difficult... I haven't seen The Zone of Interest yet (it won't be released in my neck of the woods until next week), and I'm struggling to rank my Top 4, between Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Oppenheimer and Past Lives (though those would definitely be in the Top 4 spots... unless The Zone of Interest breaks in)... then it would be Poor Things, followed by Killers of the Flower Moon, then Maestro, followed by Barbie (which, yes, it's a lot of fun, but is also a movie I find new issues with every time I talk about it), and American Fiction brings up the rear (the fact that it feels like it's constantly switching between two different movies is a major sticking point for me on this one)...
Other than Anatomy of a Fall being too low, I couldn't agree more on that list. American Fiction, unfortunately not released outside North America so we're still waiting. But overall, as you said this year has been gold for movie lovers and I am glad I like cinema to watch them, enjoy them and rank them by how much I loved them rather than by how much I didn't. This Best Picture line-up will be so remembered.
I love Lanthimos but Poor things was definitely not an easy pill to swallow however Emma did such an incredible performance that hopefully would earn her 2nd Oscar.....!

I just got around to seeing every film, so here are my rankings (per your instruction at 7:08, haha): 1. Past Lives (9/10) 2. Anatomy of a Fall (8/10) 3. The Holdovers (8/10) 4. Killers of the Flower Moon (6/10) 5. American Fiction (6/10) 6. Oppenheimer (5/10) 7. The Zone of Interest (5/10) 8. Barbie (4/10) 9. Maestro (4/10) 10. Poor Things (1/10) My favorites of the year are Robot Dreams, Perfect Days, and To Kill a Tiger, in that order.
So I have: 1. Killers of the Flower Moon 2. The Zone of Interest 3. Oppenheimer 4. Past Lives 5. Maestro (yeah, turns out I loved it a lot more than most people seem to) 6. Anatomy of a Fall 7. Barbie And then the movies from my personal Top 10 of the year overall end and we have 8. Poor Things 9. The Holdovers 10. American Fiction
i'm sorry you hate to see other people having fun, a good time with other movie-goers and being able to enjoy things. i hope you get that checked out. seems miserable to live your life like that.
I agree with top 2. Oppenheimer for sure blows all the other films away ( yes, just having a little pun with it). Past Lives is 2nd. Such a moving film. And Greta Lee should bump Gladstone off the best leading actress list. There are more than 5 outstanding performances by women but Greta Lee should be in the top 5. BIG disagreement with your #3. If you’re doing your favorites, fine. But ranking BEST, Barbie isn’t competitive. I had a ball watching it, too, but other than being just immensely entertaining, it doesn’t have the gravitas most of the others do. My #3 is Anatomy of a Fall. As with films like, say, Inception, the ending of this will be discussed for a long time. Did she? The Holdovers for me is sort of like Barbie in as far as entertaining goes. I appreciate the feels the movie has, and the 3 performances are outstanding, but I think it should be on everyone’s list of favorite Christmas films and not the best of 2023. I have not seen Zone or Poor Things yet. Killers was stretched out way too long, the performances (esp Leo) over the top, and Gladstone’s is lovely in the SUPPORTING role. But that doesn’t make the movie less disappointing. It’s in my bottom five. American Fiction is smart, well directed, and has a terrific performance by Jeffery Wright. It would be #4 unless Poor Things or Zone takes the spot. And one of them will probably fill the #5 slot. I cannot even place Maestro in a list of ten. Carey Mulligan and Gustav Mahler are the best things in it and Mulligan has done this role before. Cooper is just embarrassing. The prosthesis, the New York Jewish accent, the over the top acting, oh my. He even overdoes Bernstein’s flamboyant conducting. I’m not sure what Oscar bait is so I don’t fault the movie for that. I’m really looking forward to seeing Poor Things. I love Lanthimos, Stone, Ruffalo and Defoe so I expect to be delighted.
My ranking: 1. Oppenheimer (A) -Nolan operates on a level all of his own. 2. Killers of the Flower Moon (A) -epic in every way. 3. The Holdovers (A) -lots of heart 4. Poor things (A) -lots of fun. 5. Anatomy of a Fall (A-) 6. Maestro (B) -its fine 7. American Fiction (B-) terribly written/structured film with a great performance by Jeffrey Wright 8. Barbie (D+) terrible music, terrible 2nd half 9. Past Lives (F) - boring, lazy filmmaking on every level Have not seen: The Zone of Interest
Unpopular opinion: 2022 and this year both weak for Oscar movies. My top three this year are 1) Poor Things, 2) The Holdovers, 3) Anatomy of a Fall. The rest were average to bad. 2021 was the last great movie year. Do not get the hype for this year at all.
I agree this year has the best crop of nominees, but Zone of Interest kind of nullifies that for me lol. It’s the worst best picture nominee I’ve seen in years

9. The Holdovers
10. American Fiction
You gotta be drunk to have these head ass opinions
Zone of Interest AND Flower Moon below Barbie? That's crazy man
Absolute brain rot to rank Barbie so high.
i'm sorry you hate to see other people having fun, a good time with other movie-goers and being able to enjoy things. i hope you get that checked out. seems miserable to live your life like that.
@@ikateeo I have a free coupon to a sarcasm class, you might want to use it!
I still don’t get what people see in Anatomy. It’s fine. Same with Scorseses latest
My ranking:
1. Oppenheimer (A) -Nolan operates on a level all of his own.
2. Killers of the Flower Moon (A) -epic in every way.
3. The Holdovers (A) -lots of heart
4. Poor things (A) -lots of fun.
5. Anatomy of a Fall (A-)
6. Maestro (B) -its fine
7. American Fiction (B-) terribly written/structured film with a great performance by Jeffrey Wright
8. Barbie (D+) terrible music, terrible 2nd half
9. Past Lives (F) - boring, lazy filmmaking on every level
Have not seen: The Zone of Interest
Cmon man you cant just put Nyad in all 10 spots
Weak lineup. All of Us Strangers clears Barbie, Killers & Anatomy of a Fall so easily.
Reminds us that 2022 was a god tier year for movies.
Anatomy of a Fall will win Best Picture.
2023 is for sure a bit weak but Oppenheimer is my best movie of the 2020s
@@RB-.- Glad you liked it. CODA is my best movies of the 2020s.
Do u c anyone talk about it I don’t think so
@@thatguycman235 Sure. All of the youtube people I listen to talk about what a great year it was.
useless
I agree this year has the best crop of nominees, but Zone of Interest kind of nullifies that for me lol. It’s the worst best picture nominee I’ve seen in years
