CTA 'L' - CRRC Sifang 7000 Series Cars Performance Testing on the Orange Line

  • The next generation of CTA 'L' cars are seen here testing; making simulated stops along the Orange Line. This was taken December 30th. Every new rail car series has to go through a variety of tests to ensure they are safe for passenger service. This includes making sure the rail cars can handle being able to go through certain stations, curves, tunnels, 'L' structures, .etc. In this video they are specifically testing the hydraulic suspension and making sure the cars lower properly to platform level.
    This was also a good opportunity for the 7000s to test in winter weather as there was a snow storm the night before. The screeching you hear are the train's third rail sleet scrapers, which scrape ice off the third rail so that the power collector shoes don't get damaged.
    CTA's 7000 Series cars, being built by CRRC Sifang America, will replace CTA's 2600 Series cars which were built between 1981-87 and are currently the oldest in the fleet. The base order for the cars is 400 cars. If all options are picked up for 846 railcars, the 7000 Series will also replace 3200 Series cars, built 1992-94 by Morrison-Knudsen. The cars are expected to run on the Blue, Brown, and Orange Lines.

      Rail squeal is a screeching train-track friction sound, commonly occurring on sharp curves. Squeal is presumably caused by the lateral sticking and slipping of the wheels across top of the railroad track. This results in vibrations in the wheel that increase until a stable amplitude is reached

    I wonder why CRRC and Bombardier went to all that effort to design and implement a kneeling system for the trains when they could’ve just built the trains with the floor height a couple of inches lower... that would’ve saved them the money and effort of designing and maintaining a hydraulic kneeling system. Seems a bit like overkill IMO.
    Also, why were the marker lights on at the back of the train at 8:58? Shouldn’t it just be the red marker lights, not the orange line lights as well?

    • @rileycoyote4924
      @rileycoyote4924 3 года назад +4

      The kneeling system was implemented because wheelchair-bound passengers can roll off the train before kneeling when the train is somewhat raised to allow them to exit with ease. When the train kneels, wheelchair-bound passengers can roll onto the train in much the same way, using gravity to their advantage. I've heard that the 7000 series have alignment sensors to detect the exact platform level and align to it, which would eliminate the problem of some platforms that are very much higher or lower than most others on the system.

    • @OliversElevators
      @OliversElevators 3 года назад +2

      @@rileycoyote4924 that makes sense, but I’m wondering why they didn’t just build the trains with a floor height that was just a couple inches lower than the previous stock so that it matched the platform height at stations. That way the trains wouldn’t need to kneel at all and it would be more like other rail systems where the trains’ floor height is at the same height as the platform. It just seems like an extra mechanical system that will require maintenance and will break over time.

    • @ChicagolandTransit
      @ChicagolandTransit  3 года назад +4

      @@OliversElevators Every platform is different as far as height. Some platforms are uneven. There is no way to design a train with a "perfect" floor to platform level.

    • @OliversElevators
      @OliversElevators 3 года назад +1

      @@ChicagolandTransit lol that’s unfortunate. This is the only rail system I know of that has trains that kneel like buses. They’re probably never going to be able to get rid of the kneeling feature on new stock until they re-level all the platforms. Now you need to get New York to get trains that kneel so they don’t have such a vertical platform gap.

    I wonder if the blue color on the front of the car (once in service)?will designate blue line, and cars assigned to red, brown, green etc lines will have front ends painted in colors of their lines. • @ChicagolandTransit
      @ChicagolandTransit  3 года назад +11

      CTA will not waste money repainting cars according to what line they'll be assigned to. That's why LED colored signs exist. CTA has used the color blue on their rail and bus vehicles for years now. It gives the train a very modern look.

    • @blue9multimediagroup
