Lol I meant to imply that RUclipsrs are better when they aren't even trying as apposed to people who make a living off of it. Check out olas bands. They're pretty good. Different guitar vibe for each one
This is the most helpful comparison I've ever seen. Ola, I love your tones and style and hearing a hero comparing stuff makes it that much easier to make a decision. Thanks for all your videos.
It's difficult to decide on a pickup when you make every pickup sound so damn great... If I spent half as much time watching you play as I do listening to pickups on RUclips, using my iPad, I might learn something. Thanks man, it's back to the lab again.
I have the Alt 8 and I am pretty certain that he wired the coils in parallel instead of series. The real Alt 8 sound is thicker than the distortion with a slight bit less treble extension and thicker mids below the resonance peak. The best description is a JB on steroids. I love it for thrash.
@@zaodriver intersting to know I actually thought it might have to do with the wiring but in the context of the video and the sound of riff I absolutley loved the tone of alt 8 in this video. Sounds really nasty.
That alternative TB-15 sounds amazing! It’s so crisp and bright sounding, almost like an active single coil but still has a fair amount of chug. I wonder how it would sound in a tele bridge?
I'm honestly feeling the Full Shred Sh-10. As a lead guitarist with an often progressive approach, what best suits me is a versatile pickup with enough punch for various metal genres but not too much aggression to where more melodically played parts and higher notes lose their clarity or become too noisy with distortion. Thus, the Full Shred.
Alternative 8 Trembucker is definitely sounding tight! It's got some attack and the sound is unique! But my favourite goes to Invader, awesome rhythm sound!
Arch Enemy only tunes to C standard, Slayer tunes to Eb, Death tuned to D standard, Suffocation tunes to C#, Pantera tuned to E(usually a quater step flat) and D(also usually a quater step flat), Exodus tunes currently to D standard, and the list goes on. Not all Extreme Metal bands take advantage of low tunings.
A lot of you including myself liked the invader so I got one.. that thing is so hot and baddy I just fired my bass player, no need for one with this pick up.. the other guitar player? It’s ok he can stay but my tone is so full and angry and he is not able to cut through the mix .. great pickup to play at home.. alone .. forever
Never get tired of seeking the most dynamic, versatile and warmest sound possible. Dynamics and versatility are all: when I understood it, a whole world opened to me. In fact I looked back and noticed that vintage and bluesy sounds always win in all fields. E.g. Megadeth are a Thrash Metal band, but recorded their best old albums using Seymour Duncan '59 and "Jeff Beck Model", which are Jazz-Blues pick-ups and it's amazing how clear in the chords they are, yet they can be so aggressive as well!
Trembucker is for guitars that have a Tremolo bridge. Hence the name "TREMbucker". A trembucker's pole pieces are a little further apart because the strings are further apart on these types of bridges (Floyd Rose, Edge III, Edge ZR). normal fixed bridge, tune-o-matic bridge don't need a trembucker.
SH series, in general, wins. Personally dig the Invader and Full Shred a little more than the Distortion, but the three of them were my favorites. TB-15 sounds like total ass.
Yes, I can in standard tuning. However, I see your point and agree with you about some aspects: when you deal with extreme music (which I love by the way, please don't misunderstand me), you are allowed to use extreme tunings and extreme kinds of sound. But don't you think it is a fashion or a stupid stereotype that almost all modern Hard Rock-Metal bands (not talking about extremely heavy genres) almost always use low tunings and too often active pick-ups with static and "fictitious" sounds?
as a metalhead, the structure of the palm mutes tells me best if i like the pickup. you can quite guess the lead sound from analizing the palm mute if your ear's used to that. excellent demo for all metal riffers, if that's not you why complain?
This weekend I had a friend over that scored a '87 platinum series warlock for 70 bucks. the one with the large reversed headstock. we had the bridge pickup replaced by an IronGear metal machine. then we put the DR neon multicolor (rainbow) strings on it. it was a GAY operation, BUTT: 1/4 of the price, and the metal machine can easily live up to any hi gain pickup. the dimebuckers just sound awfully fuzzy, believe me, don't trust the internet, where everything is played through very expensive amps.
take the neck version of the full shred if you want a full shred at the neck. i have a set of full shreds and i absolutely love em! a lot of chug and a wonderful lead tone.
Every once in a while there's a riff that makes you pick the guitar up and figure it out ..and gives you more possibilities and more inspiration :) Thank You Ola for that.
sorry i meant to say the alternative 8 ^^ not the invader, the invader sounds great... all of them sound great but idistinctvely noted a bit of a sound apart from all the others with the alternative 8
@Marvin Henkel - music channel Hahaha i completely agree! I like the alternative 8 because it almost mimics a telecaster tone. In high gain washed out metal, chord definition can be extremely hard to get and those pickups would be perfect for solid chord definition. They were excellent.
All sound amazing* and are super adept at high gain metal which we all love and ALL play :D *Except for the Alternative 8 though - waaay too trebly/bright and subsequently thin sounding :/
+RolanTHUNDER this demo does not make the TB-15 justice. It actually have an awesome bass response. I might swap the alnico 5 magnet of a bridge pickup for the alnico 8 just to have something close to that.
Pedro Iago I see. Well I haven't had the chance to try a TB-15 yet. Also the rigs in these videos are almost always different from our own so the sound will always be different. I'd like to hear what that swop will sound like :)
Ola Englund your channel must be exploding with notifications constantly Because everybody loves you and they all want to say something to you I am a humble little coin in a well full of wishes lol
That alternative 8 definitely has the most noticeable tonal change from all the others, I would love to see how it would sound with my equipment, thanks for the vid Ola \m/
Dude they sounded amazing, very much like a telecaster metal sound. Think wintersun's first album. Also very good for thrash because you can hear every note really bright and with a fast attack. Thrash riffs would be great with those!
Wow that Alternative 8 has a very unique percussive quality to it. Great playing, like always. I bought new Duncans this week, and I listened to this many times (though I did go with the JB), own an SH-6 and I love it.
I have owned the Distortion set and currently own the Alternative 8. The Alternative 8 that I own doesn't sound like that at all. It is similar to the Distortion and JB but with a little bit less treble extension and thicker mids below the resonance peak. It isn't clangy at all. It sounds like he wired the coils in parallel instead of series. I have the seymour duncan triple shot rings to allow for series and parallel switching.
It just depends on what you are going for man. Think of wintersun, he's got an excellent guitar tone on his first album, it was unique because it was a twangy telecaster. For those who play lots of chords in their metal that pickup is looks amazing. Also, that is an Animals as Leaders tone if I've ever heard it. Exactly what tosin goes for in his rig because it allows you to get each and every note fully separate from the others, if you paly a chord you can hear everything under the high gain. With the other if you were to play a chord it would be totally washed out and that's good too for certain things. So its all subjective, depends on the style your going for.

no, just a different sound than the others pickups. I love it
Thank you for uploading this video. I wanna tell you about Duncan pickups. I love black veil brides and other Metal band. For example "bullet for my valentine" "breaking Benjamin" etc. I love heavy sounds. And I wanna play black veil brides songs. Do you think which should I use Duncan's pickup? Now I think I should buy SH-6n(distortion). How do you think it?
did you use the neck version on the full shred in the neck? i have a sh10b and an sh10n in my guitar and, the neck version sounds absolutely gorgeous! one of the best sets for lead sounds along with the dimarzio evolutions.
The thing is I'm trying to get away from active pickups. Nothing against them tonally, but I don't like being dependent on batteries. Nonetheless, those are definitely on my future list. But right now I'll stick with passives. Any suggestions with that? By the way, since you mentioned it, is it possible to get clean tones out of a AHB2? Or just with the jumper on/push pull/mini-toggle?
If you're using a Ax FX 2 it doesn't really matter what pickup you're using because you can just dial in what you want it to be. It like ZZ Top, BFG has it set so no matter what guitar he's using it sounds like his Les Paul.
I want that alternative so bad. I know a lot of you dislike it but there are many excellent things that pickup could be used for! I like because it IS completely different than the others and has an excellent telecaster/strat type tone but with a humbucker's output. For someone who play lot of chords in their metal this would be the ideal pickup so you chord definition would stay solid and not be washed out. Also has that awesome, thin twangy tone that you get when you put a five way switch in the second position! It sounds SO much like the first Winterson record and basically all Animals as Leaders stuff.
Great test, My ears liked them in this order. But i am sure they would sound different in different guitars and woods.1.Blackouts 2.Full shred 3. Invader 4.Distortion 5. Dimebucker 6. Distortion trembucker7. Alternative( sounded like a songle coil) terrible sounding but i am sure it has an application
What's w/ the Alt. 8??? I've heard that it's nothing but pure awesomeness, but here it sounds awful compared to the other pickups. Did you install it right or did you split it or something? It sounds too much like a single coil and it's making noises I haven't heard a full humbucker make before.
I'm so glad you understand my point, which, by the way, can't be so difficult to be understood. You said you were addicted to low tuning and that is just what happens to so many, too many people. The same goes on with exaggerated distortions and all that fashion of active pick-ups, while forgetting about real, dynamic, warm, versatile and actually aggressive sounds. People need to wake up and to stay away from all those decoys and expedients, which are nothing more than little mirrors for larks.
Correct me im wrong but he's playing an alt 8 trembucker, and they also have an alt 8 pickup that's not a "trembucker". Trembucker is a mod you can have done to your pickup according to the seymour duncan website.
The Distortion SH-6 sounds awesome - very tight, very brilliant, a power-gain-monster. Unfortunately there is no AHB-2 Blackouts audio sample. This Pickup is a real output-monster! 🤘💯
definately the blackouts or the invader. although the alternative trem and the duncan distortion are pretty close. i have one guitar that still has the sd livewire "hmet" humbucker on 18 volts. got it paired up with the livewire singlecoil at the neck position, and it is a killer.
that riff gets SO annoying but i appreciate your taking the time to go through all the pick ups and their tones, it really helped. I think my favorite is the invader, tasteful bite with punchy low-mid range that almost borderlines "muddy." too bad i don't have an axe fx to try it out on haha
Have you tried the Blackout Metal (AHB-2)? If you take the jumper off, the tone is incredibly nice, smooth distortion, good amount of mids, and the bottom end is nice and full but not muddy. Better than the ahb-1.
Trembuckers are designed for wider string spacing most commonly associated with Floyd Rose or vintage vibrato bridges which are also called Tremolo bridges.
What do you think of having Alt 8 in Bridge and an Invader at neck? I'm replacing the pickups in my guitar soon and I really don't know what to do with the neck since these all seem to be designed for bridge. And neck IS the heavier/warmer/less 'twangy' sound if I'm correct?
Great video! I have an opening gig for Diamond Head tomorrow and my bridge pickup crapped out on me! I need to buy something new first thing in the morning and this video helped me decide!
The duncan dist trem bucker and the blackouts seem to have the most thickness and presence but different pickups have different output volumes. I tend to think most pickups from Duncan tend to be very high quality and sound great. The JB is still my favorite.
The Fender always sounds great with distortion, and the JS2 sounded great too with Lace bars; it was usually just a feel/sound thing between the 2, especially since I fingerpluck the Fender and pick the JS2. The Kelly I'm still working on, and I'm probably gonna have to swap out the strings for something lighter on the JS(50-115 for Eb is getting to be hard to play!) What do you use? Would you recommend a string brand? And DiMarzio or Lace for alt-thrash dark scream?
Why is it, that RUclipsrs make heavier riffs only for product demos, than modern metal bands make😂😂😂
I make heavy riffs because I can, and because it’s what I like to play.
Lol I meant to imply that RUclipsrs are better when they aren't even trying as apposed to people who make a living off of it. Check out olas bands. They're pretty good. Different guitar vibe for each one
There are many great modern underground metal bands you probably haven't heard about.
Yeah man I think you’re missing out on some awesome bands then
Blah, blah, blah....blah blah blah blah
4:12 Alternative 8 Trembucker
4:36 Invader
5:00 Full Shred
5:24 Duncan Distortion
2:58 Blackout 8
3:23 Dimebucker
This is the most helpful comparison I've ever seen. Ola, I love your tones and style and hearing a hero comparing stuff makes it that much easier to make a decision. Thanks for all your videos.
I watched this video several times ,but i keep coming back beacouse of the riff :D
After all these years, Invaders still sound amazing!
It's difficult to decide on a pickup when you make every pickup sound so damn great... If I spent half as much time watching you play as I do listening to pickups on RUclips, using my iPad, I might learn something. Thanks man, it's back to the lab again.
When he's palm muting those chords he gets such a "choomchoomchoom" sound and it's so fucking beautiful
8 years after, I believe we have a chug situation going on in here
Chug chug chug lmao
The Alt 8 has more of a single coil sound to it. It was the most different sound of all the pickups.
Thanks for making this!
I have the Alt 8 and I am pretty certain that he wired the coils in parallel instead of series. The real Alt 8 sound is thicker than the distortion with a slight bit less treble extension and thicker mids below the resonance peak. The best description is a JB on steroids. I love it for thrash.

Sh6 it has a really nice tone too it even with all the punch it packs
Best pickup on the planet!
Seymour Duncan Invader SH-8!!!!!! Yeahhhh!!!!!!!
I like the blackout, invader, and duncan distortions the best. They seem to really lock onto the low/treb tones for that raw metal sound.
I like the Blackouts and the Invaders the most probably.
Fact : I use this riff when soundchecking at shows
The Full Shred is a badass and with so much clarity and better tonal balance
The Alternative 8 sounded really single coily. Still sounded really killer!
Very throaty, which is nice, but the top end has too much rattle, which is bad.
That's funny you said they sounded single coil. I really wanna try one in the neck for soloing/jazz/clean tones
That alternative TB-15 sounds amazing! It’s so crisp and bright sounding, almost like an active single coil but still has a fair amount of chug. I wonder how it would sound in a tele bridge?

Thus, the Full Shred.
The distortion and Alt-8 are SICK! the alt-8 is so unique and different. Love them both.
Now this riff will be stuck in my head until I die.
is the tb-15 active?
Alternative 8 Trembucker is definitely sounding tight! It's got some attack and the sound is unique! But my favourite goes to Invader, awesome rhythm sound!

This demo riffs are going to stay in my head for a long time...
Very impressed with the Invaders. Sweet sounds coming out of that!

it's actually a MTM2. And even if it was a JPM I would've still done it :)
as a metalhead, the structure of the palm mutes tells me best if i like the pickup. you can quite guess the lead sound from analizing the palm mute if your ear's used to that. excellent demo for all metal riffers, if that's not you why complain?
I think I’m deaf but I have a hard time comparing pick ups
that dimebucker sounds amazing, dimebag really knew how to pick his gear!
Now I have the Dimebucker set in my B. C. Rich Warbeast (with Floyd Rose) and i Love it!!!
I am about to get some Dimebuckers for my Warlock😎. I can't wait
Full Shred being the most versatile and balanced tone here. WIN!!
that song is perfect for killing zombies
Full Shred for the win....got those in both guitars, one with an Alnico 8 magnet swap and the other with an Alnico 4. Killer pickups!
I loooove the Invader!! \m/
Doing fast comparisons with the time stamps, I really like the dimebucker is really tight. Love it
BLACKOUT!
take the neck version of the full shred if you want a full shred at the neck. i have a set of full shreds and i absolutely love em! a lot of chug and a wonderful lead tone.
is there anyway we can have the tabs or the name of the song you were playing cause it sounded killer
dude... that John Patrucci guitar!! And the Full Shred for the win.
Full Shred
Every once in a while there's a riff that makes you pick the guitar up and figure it out ..and gives you more possibilities and more inspiration :) Thank You Ola for that.
Best = Invader
Worst = Alternative 8 trembucker
Ruten VI haha it sounds thin kimda
Invaders and blackouts i own em
the invader sounds a bit more clear then any others in my opinion and yes a bit thin, but not by much mates... i guess tone is subjective?
sorry i meant to say the alternative 8 ^^ not the invader, the invader sounds great... all of them sound great but idistinctvely noted a bit of a sound apart from all the others with the alternative 8
@Marvin Henkel - music channel
Hahaha i completely agree!
I like the alternative 8 because it almost mimics a telecaster tone.
In high gain washed out metal, chord definition can be extremely hard to get and those pickups would be perfect for solid chord definition. They were excellent.
Been searching for this video for 6 weeks! Finally
Blackout!
This is where the full shred really comes to life, the super low tuned stuff.
That and the invader kick ass
All sound amazing* and are super adept at high gain metal which we all love and ALL play :D
*Except for the Alternative 8 though - waaay too trebly/bright and subsequently thin sounding :/

Im glad I'm not the only the person that holds their pick like a cup of tea
There's something so weird about the alternative 8 that I love.
I totally agree. The JB is a classic high output pickups. Very versatile too
thanks man :D
Ola Englund your channel must be exploding with notifications constantly
Because everybody loves you and they all want to say something to you
I am a humble little coin in a well full of wishes lol
Sh6
That alternative 8 definitely has the most noticeable tonal change from all the others, I would love to see how it would sound with my equipment, thanks for the vid Ola \m/
anyone agree that the alternate 8 pickups sounded really thrashy.
depends on what you're playing with these
Noir Yes it does. I play thrash, so the alternate 8's sound awesome.
Slayer and Megadeth are both thrash. yet they have completely different sounds
Dude they sounded amazing, very much like a telecaster metal sound.
Think wintersun's first album.
Also very good for thrash because you can hear every note really bright and with a fast attack. Thrash riffs would be great with those!
Sorry bud Alternate8 failed here. But I think it has other uses. Not palm mutes. Prolly prof metal
Wow that Alternative 8 has a very unique percussive quality to it. Great playing, like always. I bought new Duncans this week, and I listened to this many times (though I did go with the JB), own an SH-6 and I love it.

dimebucker
Vashpe Vashpevich Yap, I think getting the dimebucker or the blackouts STD though decision :(
Obviously
Ckw
Took me like 5 minutes to realize I was watching an Ola video... So, yea... Thanks Ola, almost 13 years later.
The only one I might not get would be the alternative..
Agreed. Too twangy for metal.
Also you can hear the hiss in the background on the guitar only track
Love SH 15 probably best passive bridge PUP with high gain amps! Pegasus Set is good too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So its all subjective, depends on the style your going for.
no, just a different sound than the others pickups. I love it
the alternative 8 sounds awful
i think its good for gojira type sound or something thigh, i dig it :), they were all good though.
Jesus christ, you're right. Pile of shit lol
The alternative 8 sounded real.. different! I'm not sure whether it was a bad or a good sound but I didn't know to expect a sound like that.
Agree
that thing sounded like a single coil almost it was terrible lol
Thank you for uploading this video. I wanna tell you about Duncan pickups. I love black veil brides and other Metal band. INVADER SH-8 !! ImI
you can put an Invader in guitar with floyd rose without any problems??? or you have to choose an edition for tremolo bridges?
alt 8 sounds like shit.
aysat it's just a different tone. I love it.
Yes less distortion on it
It was one of the best pickups i had on my RG3120 (mahogany), and i dont know why that one sucks that much here.
where did you manage to find that John Petrucci Ibanez??
Dimebucker slayed every other pickup
ola, you are the ONLY other person that i have ever seen that picks like i do.
Alternative 8 Trembucker
did you use the neck version on the full shred in the neck? i have a sh10b and an sh10n in my guitar and, the neck version sounds absolutely gorgeous! one of the best sets for lead sounds along with the dimarzio evolutions.
wth? all sound exactly similar to my ears :(
The thing is I'm trying to get away from active pickups. Nothing against them tonally, but I don't like being dependent on batteries. Nonetheless, those are definitely on my future list. But right now I'll stick with passives. Any suggestions with that?

I like because it IS completely different than the others and has an excellent telecaster/strat type tone but with a humbucker's output.

just realize this was 1st video made me subscribe Ola and made me try out on youtube back at 2011!!
glad back here again
Correct me im wrong but he's playing an alt 8 trembucker, and they also have an alt 8 pickup that's not a "trembucker". Trembucker is a mod you can have done to your pickup according to the seymour duncan website.
which will be better for tight metal riff n pinch hermonics among duncan distortion sh6b n dimebuckersh13?
Best comparison video I ever seen. Great job.
I just gotta say the invader kicka ass so i just ordered it ;) what pickup do you prefer of all these?
that riff gets SO annoying but i appreciate your taking the time to go through all the pick ups and their tones, it really helped. I think my favorite is the invader, tasteful bite with punchy low-mid range that almost borderlines "muddy." too bad i don't have an axe fx to try it out on haha
In my taste,as I already knew,Duncan distortion Sh6 is the metal PU!Ther's no way!Really great great job dude!You're the man!nice play!Gratz!
Hey Ola! is there a big difference between the blackout ahb-1,2 and 3? which one would you recommend? thanks.
What wood yall put in my new Epi Jeff Waters Annilation V got to take out the probukers! Should I go with Invaders sh-8 or sh-6????!?? HELP!!
Have you tried the Blackout Metal (AHB-2)? If you take the jumper off, the tone is incredibly nice, smooth distortion, good amount of mids, and the bottom end is nice and full but not muddy. Better than the ahb-1.
i think the invader and the SH6 has the best overal tone..also the Tom Anderson HN3+ has a sick tone too but it's hard to find demos of that one
Full Shred, Alt 8, and DImebucker sound the best to my ears.
Trembuckers are designed for wider string spacing most commonly associated with Floyd Rose or vintage vibrato bridges which are also called Tremolo bridges.
Every fucking question I have about metal guitars I put in and type ola englund after it and I’m educated. This video saved me so much time. ❤️
