Fine Art TV Series - Colour In Your Life
    Season - 10
    Episode - 13
Filmed on Location at - Tauranga, New Zealand
Internationally acclaimed New Zealand watercolor and oil artist Susan Harrison-Tustain’s highly sought after work will take you on an artistic journey.
Her passion for painting and for natural beauty and light allows the viewers of her work to feel part of the world she has captured. A world so life-like you can ‘smell’ the perfume of the roses, see the light as it glistens through a dew-drop or feel the nostalgic atmosphere she has created in her still lifes studies of much loved, time-worn object d’art.
Susan decided after an extensive trip to Europe and its national galleries to take her work to a professional level. Her exhibitions are much awaited events and are highly successful. Queues for the exhibitions start to form several hours before opening time and continue throughout the duration of the show. Susan’s work has been on several prestigious magazine covers and within the pages of many publications. The demand for Susan’s work far outweighs her output. With this in mind she has released archival quality, signed and numbered Limited Edition Lithographs of her work and museum quality Iris Giclees of her latest paintings.
You’ll find Susan’s work represented in collections in the U.S.A., Britain, France, Italy, Turkey, Australia and New Zealand. She tutors workshops in New Zealand and USA which are in great demand and are attended by artists from all over the world. Passionate about a variety of subjects, Susan particularly loves to paint child studies, figurative studies, nude, still life, bird and floral studies. Painting intuitively, she has a natural affinity for watercolor and an innate ability to captivate the viewers of her work.
Her paintings capture the very ‘essence’ of her subject and the viewers find themselves lost in the world she has created. Susan lives in the beautiful, clean, green New Zealand countryside overlooking the picturesque coastal, port towns of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui. She likes to think of art as ‘timeless’ and trusts that, through her paintings, you will also feel the ‘passion’ and revelation she felt when the inspiration for each of her paintings was born.
You can contact the artist about their art tips or art techniques directly via their website www.susanart.com/

Thank you for your kind words SuperXrunner and Graeme! Being self taught has meant I have needed to discover the secrets for myself. Analyzing and subsequently understanding what it is in nature and our subjects that reaches out to us and compels us to paint, has meant I can portray the very spirit of a subject. This is what I love emphasize in my work and of course this is what I love to teach other artists. We are all on a never ending journey of discovering the joy of nature and painting! Happy painting everyone! Susan

I’m not an artist and thought watercolour a bit wishy washy. No longer do I think this, you have a very unique way of capturing the essence of your subject that pulls the viewer right into the picture

Its always great to see Susan work her magic. I just love artwork and not just her work but the person as well. She is beautiful inside and out. Her soul shows in her paintings. PS, she speaks about her supplies and tools not as a sales pitch but because they are essential to her technique and how her work is done. Its all worth hearing about.

Thank you 'My Pretty Office' for your lovely words about my work and teachings. Yes I will be teaching two workshops in Marrochydore on the Sunshine Coast of Australia in October this year. I have two spots that have just come available: due to ill-health and a job change. If anyone wants to grab those places - be quick. It is very rare for places to come available on my workshops. Ramesh, Jean and Kate - thank you for taking the time to write your lovely comments too.

Thank you everyone for your very humbling comments! It is such a pleasure to feature on Put Some Colour in Your Life and to share some of the hints and tips that have been magical breakthroughs on my painting journey in watercolor and oil painting. A wonderful day of filming condensed down to twenty four minutes is never going to be long enough of course - there is so much I could share with you! However I hope the few insights I have shared in this video will have the same huge impact on your work - as they have on mine. Thank you so much to the two real stars of the show: Graeme Stevenson (director) and Sophia Stacey who is the producer who weaves everything together so beautifully. Thank you too to Jenny, Tanita and the rest of the dream team Some of you have written and asked me about my yellow tonal map/underwash. I thought I would share this additional information here for you all to read:
AN ADDTIONAL TIP: For those who love to paint in watercolor or oil: You can see me demonstrating a yellow tonal map/underwash in this Put Some Color in Your Life video. I create this magical underwash to enable my paintings to glow with warmth in my shadow areas in particular. This yellow underwash also brings an amazing sense of substance and presence to my work. When deciding where to paint my varying strengths of yellow (my tonal map/underwash) - I am always careful to avoid the highlights - as well as any areas that will eventually be blue or purple.
REASON: The yellow tonal map/underwash can influence and dramatically change highlights as well as blue and purple - if used too strongly. Slightly too much yellow underwash can be unforgiving in these areas. Blue can become green and purple can become brown. If I need to use a tiny amount of yellow to tint my highlights or my blue and purple areas - I find I have much more control over the finished color if I add my touch of yellow to my MIX, when I am MIXING my blues or purples for my subsequent color washes. In these cases, during my yellow tonal map/underwash layers, I let those areas remain the white of the paper until I am ready to add my other colors/mixes in the subsequent layer. Have fun with my yellow tonal map. It revolutionized my paintings - I hope it does the same for you too! Happy painting everyone. Susan Harrison-Tustain.

You are in luck - I have recently announced the last two workshops I will be conducting in Australia. I only have a few places left. The workshops are in May. Sadly they will be the last I will be teaching in Australia for some time as my schedule and other art related commitments mean I need a clone! So these last two workshops will be extra special. Hope you can join us. Here is the link to my workshop page for my workshop information: susanart.com/workshops-2/ It would be fun to share all I know about painting with you. Susan Harrison-Tustain.

Graeme Stevenson (Colour in Your Life) I have to agree with Marie Niehaus though Graeme, the episode did seem to be a sales pitch. I have been a fan of Susan's for a long time and was eagerly waiting for her segment to be televised (didn't realise it was on youtube already) and watched it last night. But was bitterly disappointed to have a fair whack of the ep taken up with the pushing of brushes and Parkers supplies. Please take on board that 23 minutes does go quick and we really want to see the artist actually painting, not have to worry about suppliers etc. I understand that you have to promote your sponsors, but we want to see the artist doing what they do best. I love Colour in your Life, but have lost it on Fox at present, seems to have been time-shifted or taken off? Don't watch much of commercial TV so only realised Susan's segment was on via her newsletter. Enjoy the show TOTALLY but please keep the sales pitches to a minimum and give us more camera angles on the actual work being done. :) Cheers.
