Learning how to sew, on or off a machine, can save any outdoorsman/woman hundreds-thousands of $'s. I have a number of packs I've replaced zippers on, clothes, tent zippers, everything can be repaired. Simple tears are very easy to fix. If you can drive a car you can use a sewing machine. And like everything for outdoors, a good, heavy duty machine is what's needed.

Screw Woolrich for selling out.The hip-hop inspired boyband look they're currently going for is a slap in the face to the well earned legacy they had made for themselves prior.

I agree I went on their website recently and it's nothing like the woolrich I knew. I bought several sweaters and a autumn coat from them years ago when they still had that rugged outdoors look. Now it all looks like garbage for astronomical prices. Standard coats are now around 800$, its disgusting.

I have a Woolrich classic hunting jacket that I’ve had about 30 years and could be older as my uncle gave it to me. Its hunted in Packwood WA multiple seasons. It’s my absolute favorite fall/Winter jacket. It’s so warm.

I had the original hunter jacket, but lost it. Bought this modern hunter jacket instead, but the colour is a bit orange red, the original is a more darker wine red. So I almost never used it. Think I will give it a second chance next winter, great review. I had almost forgotten that I had one.

I bought this exact coat in an XL because of your very helpful video. I had to have it tailored a little on the sides because of my lean 6’2” stature. I chose the XL because my arms and torso are rather long and I learned that the sleeves and jacket lengths run shorter on the Large. Now it looks amazing and it’s my go-to winter coat! Cheers! Love your videos! Figured you were a fellow Pennsylvanians when you once said "crick" for creek. Also, the scenery looked so familiar to the northwestern Allegheny region where I grew up. Been stuck in the south now since 1972. First Virginia and now Florida. Miss the north woods and mountains. Keep up the great work.

Awesome review of that jacket, wool is king IMO when it comes to outdoors, but then again im not to worried about weight when it comes to being warm either. I was in PA this past October and the wind was just unforgiving. So I can definitely see that jacket being a favorite of yours. I love the layout of it and it seems very practical for bushcraft. Thanks again kirk - mike

I have this coat only mine is from the mid 1930s. Pretty crazy to see that it is pretty much exactly the same. Only all wool and mole skin lining. Still has snaps and buttons and a big pouch in the back of the jacket for putting game or what have you, a map pocket. I’d say mine weighs 8 lbs or better. Also you’d probably dig it because it has an old chain stitched pack on the sleeve Beaver Falls Sportsman’s Assn. PA!
Good stuff. Sad it’s not the company it once was though. Need more good American made textiles.

  • @Jenab7

The comment about the relative impracticality and short lifespan of zippers is very appropriate. I've never had a zippered garment for which the zipper didn't give me trouble sooner or later. Either a zipper tooth would come off, or the pull-tag would derail, or the cloth to which the zipper was attached would fray or tear out... _something always happens_ to make a zipper useless. And the ordinary person can't replace a zipper, so the garment is useless from then on.
Buttons are much more reliable. They do come off once in a while, and you should for that reason pay attention to the tightness of the thread holding the buttons on. But when a button does come off, you can sew it right back on. Anybody can do that, even the most thumb-fingered guy. And if the button disappears, another button will do, if it is about the same size.
Also, zippers can be a line of METALLIC COLD when you first put a garment on. You don't feel any chill from buttons.
My cold-dry weather outfit is (top) long-sleeve cotton tee shirt, then silk-acrylic sweater, then a Woolrich Men's Wool Stag Shirt-Jac, and (bottom) boxer-briefs, then a sheep-wool knit pants that I ordered from a seamstress in the Russian Federation, then woven wool pants, then blue jeans. On feet: Woolrich's superthick over-the-calf hiking socks, and either Merrell Mocs if I'm indoors or Montrail boots if I'm outdoors. Head: Carhartt ski mask acrylic-thinsulate pullover hat, topped with a cotton bucket hat with a 2.5-inch brim. And sunglasses, if it's bright.

Where do you keep your ammo? did you have to buy a separate waterproof pouch to carry ammo? Is the game pouch in the back removable for cleaning? is it replaceable, if I forget to clean it? In my opinion, you can get better for way less, and stay dry while your hunting. Have a good day

I have both a vintage wool rich hunt coat, and a Filson mackinaw, and I love them both equally. The Filson is a lot more comfortable, and since it isn’t lined, it isn’t quite as warm or wind resistant, but it winds up being a bit more durable since the lining is usually the first thing to wear out.

@@dylanhall6355 I bought their $700 mac daddy coat last year, the sleeves were an uneven length, flaps in the back also uneven, loose strands of wool that could be pulled out. They did basically nothing in terms of customer service. Sent detailed pics and was told MAYBE we can do something with it, maybe not. Would need to be sent in and turn around was like 8 weeks, just in time for spring... No partial refund nothing, $700 top level limited production item that i was expected to send back immediately which i could then MAYBE wear the following season ? No thanks, i really really wanted it to work out because the coat was exactly what i wanted but i had to get a refund i just cant support that kind of business. They've sold out.

Timothy, I think you are limited to either the LL Bean hunting coat or one of the Filson Mackinaw Cruisers being tall. I am 6' 6" and have the same issues on classic coats like these. I have owned the Bean coat and liked it but the sleeves tend to ride up a bit with the arms extended. I have a Filson on the way but know their extra long tincloth fits me perfectly. Hoping the wool cruiser does the same

Gabriel Sandoval they’re both great. The woolrich is a tiny bit warmer since it’s lined, but the Filson is more comfortable and more breathable. Filson uses 100% wool, and woolrich uses a wool and nylon blend. The Filson has a slightly roomier fit.

Hello, I liked your review and bought one of these coats from the Woolrich site a few months back for our upcoming trip to Patagonia. I returned it however upon noticing that the coat's interior is lined in cotton. Cotton is a poor choice in this garment because its wet weather behavior is unfriendly. It gets wet, stays wet and cold, and then transfers moisture to one's inner layers of clothing and skin. Not good. The big advantage of a wool cruiser like this lay in wool's ability to shed some water and keep the wearer warm even when it gets wet, a trait reduced if connected to a cotton lining. Strange design choice. Appreciate your review anyway.

Good news guys, this is either the same coat, or a very similar one.

Justin Jeffries That is the "original" version. It's cut differently, but still has the same features.

I love wool, unfortunately its become popular with the trendy crowd. The pricing is ridiculous and the styling has become fashion over usefulness. It's a shame.

Glad I came to watch this before buying. Seems woolrich went hipster on this jacket with all that cotton. Real outdoor situation where you get wet and all that cotton is going to be miserable

I have the same coat. It is amazing. However the buttons are a bit flimsy and a cold wind does get through the openings between the button holes. I brought it to an outdoor store and had a field jacket zipper put in and use the buttons as backup in case of a zipper failure. This is the best coat I've ever owned.

Nice coat there Krik. Kinda similar to what I bought in the late 90's. p2.vatera.hu/photos/3e/95/5197_1_big.jpg

I had the original version of that coat and had to sell it as it was just a little too small. the improvements you noted are a great upgrade. I also like the button storm closure around the collar/under the collar.
Your comments about how the jacket is to be utilized are spot on. I just recently bought a Cabela's Legacy wool jacket, in Loden, which is the competitor to that jacket. It has zips, no storm cuffs and no collar closure but it is 100% wool with a quilted nylon lining, a bit of thinsulate and some form of internal membrane making it waterproof (apparently; haven't tested that yet). I wore it last weekend for a 7 mile walkabout in the NJ Pine Barrens. Started out at 30 degrees, warmed up to 40. Whew! had to take it off and strap it over the top of my Kelty Strike. Too warm. I came to the exact same conclusion- it is to be worn when not trying to do long heavy walking or hiking - more for slow purposeful motion - as in hunting :)
You did an excellent job describing the jacket and the comments about how and when to wear it were crucial to the review. Thanks!

Every time I see one of these for sale at a reasonable price, it’s far too large. Got the pants that go with it at a Goodwill today for $4, though.

This is a great jacket. I've own one for a few years now. BUT... both the snap buttons and the other buttons are cheap, especially the larger buttons. They're made of a cheap plastic and can come off if you're a bit careless or hard when buttoning or unbuttons. Other than that, everything he said is spot on!
