Olena, a lot of this resonates! "So, how was your trip?" is something I've gotten a lot of. It is so challenging when people you love don't conceptualize your time away as more than simple travel or a line on a resume even though it was a sizable, meaningful part of your life. And that many people will unconsciously rely on our personalities and development being frozen in time from the moment we left. I'm glad to have been able to spend a lot of time back home in the U.S. over the course of the pandemic to slowly reacquaint with family and friends and get more up-to-speed. But I may be subconsciously avoiding having to completely face reverse culture shock, so here I am, still overseas. The cost of living in the U.S. is a bit intimidating, too.
I had the same fears moving back to the US, especially with cost side of it. But it's been a lot easier readjusting than I thought! I think I just built it up so much in my head over the past several years, to make it seem harder than it is. The US is NOT the same as we left it, but it's still a place that we can readjust to, over time. It's comforting to see that someone else can relate to my experiences, since we tend to lose touch with fellow expats when we move back, so I haven't spoken to anyone about their experience moving back.
Very interesting topic , there's a saying in arabic that roughly translates to something along the lines of " Whoever lived with a people for forty days became one of them " lol , there's a big difference between visiting as a tourist and living in a foreign country , you have lived in two countries different from your own and different from eachother and for a long period , no wonder you got stuck with new formed habits that might cause some awkwardness in your home country ! Awsome video 👍
Yes! I'm more stuck with Moroccan habits which I'm perfectly happy with lol!!! And you are absolutely right, it's so hard hearing people make generalizations and assumptions about a country after visiting there only for a few days lol
I'm grappling with the idea of going back abroad, but I know this kind of thing takes time! I heard for some people it takes like a year to get used to things again
Nice upload 👌
Thank you!
