I really enjoyed watching your bikini coming together - at 77 I remember wearing a knitted swimsuit as a little girl. What intrigued me was your knitting method - that's how I was taught when I was growing up in Sweden. I have seen it presented on RUclips as 'Russian knitting'. Whatever it is called, you look at home doing it!

I'm glad to know my knitting style is not just me. I used to do English style but I lost some strength in my wrist and hand which made it difficult to throw the yarn. I had just learnt to crochet so I experimented with the yarn in my right hand until something stuck 💚

As children in the 50’s my mother knitted my older brother a pair of swimming trunks. They looked great to us children, until that is, he went into the water. The crotch ended up around his knees! Us girls were more lucky as mum cut out the bathing costume shape and shirred elastic in rows all over the fabric. We loved them. When you removed them, you were left with elastic lines all the way up your body! Happy days!

I love watching your knitting process, and I am so fascinated by how you use spreadsheets to grade your patterns. Also, the colors together with the pattern just makes me think of a mermaid - I love how the suit turned out and it looks fantastic on the beach (even if the top was a little too big)! Love it!

So cute! Love the pattern, and it looks darling!! Would you be willing to do a tutorial on grading knitting patterns? I tend to struggle with grading shapes like armholes, necks…etc. Sometimes it’s bang on, but others it looks like I graded it for a cubist portrait. Thank you for the lovely video!

For more structure in cotton, I would crochet. As you found out, cotton has no memory therefore no stretch recovery. And when wet, oh my. There was a reason sewn swimsuits replaced the knit wear. And this comes from a pro handspinner who would love a knitted swimsuit. To avoid the swelling of wool fibers I would choose my wool carefully. Not all wool behaves the same in water. Worsted absorbs less water than woolen spun.
Anyway, I admire your effort. Very interesting project. As others said, elastic thread would help.

Still a cute video. Several years ago I got curious about whether the shaping used when knitting the heel of a sock could be used to shape the cup of a bra. I tried it and it seemed to make a comfortable bra cup, though when I had finished with my experiment the bra didn't fit me. It fit one of my daughters but she couldn't wear it for long because she got pregnant and her bust size increased substantially. I used pink cotton crochet thread to make it and sewed soft waistband elastic to it.

Maybe you could do some gathering on the side/side back and shorten the width there. Since there's already gathering in the middle you could fairly easily make it look like an intentional design feature, I think. (And of course it's the type of thing that's easy to adjust while wearing it, or even just take it back out again with no harm done if it doesn't work out.)

Lovely sun suit, well done. I’m a 60s gal, but fell in love with Engineering Knit’s green and cream Bestway 2085 40’s jumper and have now fallen down that rabbit hole! So I was very pleased when you uploaded this video as I got a 40’s Copley’s 1531 Lady’s Brassier pattern which I’m knitting at the moment. It calls for a smooth fabric and is knit in the back of each stitch so it’s a tight fabric, I too am using cotton and hoping it will turn out as well as your sun suit. Thank you 😊

That’s adorable! I have to admit, I find knitting very intimidating. I’ve tried to pick it up, but I got so discouraged by all the mistakes I was making. I can sew, and even the more complex things like smocking are fairly easy for me- but I had such trouble with knitting. I think I’ll just have to be satisfied with my one textile craft.
But- my brother has decided to take up knitting, and he’s far more patient (and less of a perfectionist) than I, so I’m hoping to bother him for some knitted foods in the future (which will be a fair trade system, I think).
