  • Fixing a lazy Sun Shade on a W220 2004 Mercedes Benz S500. It's a short 5-minute free fix and can be done by just about anyone. Most of the time this should work, unless it's too far gone. It worked on this car and was fully functional for another 2 1/2 years. However, be advised that we eventually had to replace that visor. If you keep lubricating it, it should last longer or indefinitely. We failed to keep re-lubricating it.
    Stuff used:
    Silicone Paste: amzn.to/30YBHGI
    Trim Removal Tools: amzn.to/2YrOi7F
    The Torx Screw Driver Set I used is no longer available on Amazon as I bought it years ago. Here is an alternate one: amzn.to/2LKWtGa
    30 day free trial on Amazon: amzn.to/2KAF69c

    My Honda dealership was going to charge $230 to replace my sunvisor, which had been broken for years. Thankfully, I tried this DYI, and it worked. 😊

    OMG it works, Thanks heaps you just saved me $120 for new replacement, I just took it off, quick squirt of WD40 and all good again , while I had it off I also added a extension using a piece of cardboard slipped into the plastic band on the back of the visor.

      It works sometimes. And sometimes it doesn’t. It’s an old video but some lube goes a long way. Don’t use WD40. It’s not a lubricant. If it’s too far gone you may have to just get another shade. Don’t dismount it. The second shade I lubed right where it was. Good luck. I hope it works.

    Thank-you! Can anyone explain how applying a lubricant to the metal rod can restore the friction needed to hold up the visor?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  5 лет назад +15

      The rod that is inside, when to dry or rusty, cannot reset to its resting position. When lubricating it, it can pop into place holding it in. I want you to try this: pull out the visor, telescope it out, rotate it up in its resting (closed) position and slide it back in. If it holds, you just need a little lube. If it doesn’t, you’re beyond repair and you need to get a new one, probably on eBay.

  • @joeh690
    @joeh690 2 месяца назад +1

    Out of curiosity how does silicone paste work for a loose sun visor that does not stay up wouldn't that make it even more floppy, I can understand the first one but the second one doesn't make sense to me ?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  2 месяца назад

      That’s an excellent question. It’s too dry, tight, so it doesn’t let it snap in all the way at the end. What happens when you flip it up, it’s all plastic and it bends as it’s not “loose” enough. Instead of rotating, you’re actually bending the “stick”. Lubricating it, lets it reduce resistance, less flex and therefore it’ll reach that point where it needs to sit. It’s really hard for me to explain without any visual aid. It doesn’t always work. It’s really a bandaid because inevitably it’ll just fail. This usually gives it another 2, 3 or 4 years of operation before you have to ultimately replace it.

  • @Nomendil

    If I heard a crack sound when lowering it would lube be the answer?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  2 года назад +1

      It’s usually the first culprit. Try lube, it fixed our problem. No need to dismount. Just get some silicone paste on the arm and worked it somit distributes. Cheapest way to start. If it’s too far gone you’ll have to replace it.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  2 года назад +2

      It’s just old. The bar has a flat spot at the end and that’s what keeps it in place. Without lube it rounds out and makes it sag. Re-lubricating it once or twice works but it’s a matter of time until it fails. Finally, 4 years later we ended up buying one from eBay and it started sagging right away and really it was in worse condition than our original one. I just can’t justify buying a new one. Maybe if your car is mint it might be worth spending the money for a brand new one.

      It doesn’t? I was very sure all E and S class had that style. I would do something more liquid rather than a paste. Try to get some in on the hinge side and see if you can get it to move again. Once it’s seized it’s too late. Also, eBay has lots of good visors for cheap. You should be able to find a telescoping one for $25 or less.
