    This video is proof that the majority of people out there don't know how to properly use a starting engine and why so many are completely trashed when I find them... The procedure for starting this tractor properly in a hurry is 4 min.... 6 done correctly at normal speed ... I had a mint condition D4-7u and it takes 3-5 min to start summer time or winter, longer in the winter... That starting engine is to provide a warm start for the Diesel... Even in the summer open the compression release and leave the throttle off and crank it for a good couple min before you close the compression release to allow the engine to build heat in the cylinder walls. Once there's some heat in the pistons and sleeves open the throttle and itl pop off almost instantly. Shut the gas off on the pony and let it run out of gas in the carb, by the time the pony runs dry the engine will be evened out and running smoothly by then and ready to finish warming up then take off. This guy here dry starts the diesel and loads it up with unnecessary fuel then rips out before the pony shuts completely off. Already warm or not that's hard on internal components.

      I ran an 8-H on a dam job and every morning I'd start the pony at idle and let it turn the diesel over with the compression released, fuel off. SLOW! I'd drink a cup of coffee then open up the pony and hit the compression and open the throttle and start chuffing. Never had a problem.

      @User-ww3rc you say its repairable but parts for theese donkey/pony engines are getting very scarce I have a friend who's trying to rebuild his d9d even fire donkey engine as the crank has about 5+mm lift due to being abused and its proving extremely difficult at the moment as nobody stocks parts for them anymore

    Them pony motors were the most abused engines ever. No warm-up, right to full throttle full load and when the main catches they were over spun. Last but not least shut off cold. And treated this way for decades with no maintenance. It's a wonder they lasted a minute

    No hablo inglés pero más o menos comprendo una que otra palabra,según yo,el título del vídeo es sobre el encendido en frío de un motor Caterpillar , corrijanme por favor. El vídeo dura solo 1.45 min, y en ese tiempo tan corto encendió el motor pony ,el motor de la máquina y se movió el equipo a trabajar, o una de dos, ese motor no estaba frio, o el operador no conoce los protocolos para encender una máquina antigua, así como su temperatura, entonces no es profesional a mi parecer,ya que también mantiene los pies sobre el pedal de freno al estar en movimiento el tractor, ya que solo debe aplicarse en caso de ser necesario y no mantenerlo constantemente sobre el pedal. saludos.

    This is NOT the way to start a Cat with a petrol pony motor. This "operator" did just about everything wrong. Correct method is to let the petrol engine run for a minute or two to warm up then to engage the diesel engine with the (diesel engine) throttle off and the diesel engine decompression lever engaged. Allow the diesel engine to spin for a couple of minutes on decompression until the oil pressure is right up and you have good fuel pressure. Only then should the decompression lever be flicked over (still with the diesel fuel off). The length of time that you allow the diesel engine to turn over like this depends on the ambient temperature that the machine is being operated in; if it's quite warm then you can give it some throttle to start it almost immediately. However, if the ground is frozen over then you need to let it spin over for a couple of minutes before giving it some fuel to start (allows the air in the combustion chambers to warm up a bit). I was shown by the best and it always worked for me, from the heat of Far North NZ to the freezing cold of Antarctica.

      I have never seen one with a fuel pressure gauge and oil pressure usually builds up after 5 seconds

    • @charlienorton2337
      @charlienorton2337 4 года назад

      Douglas Oakley smaller cats have fuel pressure gauges not too sure about bigger ones

    • @tallen4520
      @tallen4520 4 года назад +2

      Correct, but er close compression until you see oil pressure gauge indicate max pressure; else your main engine dry starts momentarily. This is why newer models have electric oil pressure overide.

      @74superglide 4 года назад

      @@charlienorton2337 are you talking about newer or older machines. I have been on mostly newer cat stuff from d3 to d8 and I never have seen a gauge!?

  • @danw1955
    @danw1955 4 года назад +4

    I'd almost guarantee that Cat wasn't cold, but that operator sure is... hope it still had some oil up on the cylinder walls. This is the exact reason why you see so many pony motors torn up on these older machines.🙄

    Cold start the wrong way.
    This is about as amateur as you'll ever see.
    Don't ever start like this.
    First let the pilot motor warm up, then engage the main engine with fuel off and with decompression leaver in the on position, (no compensation)
    Let main engine oil pressure build up, circulation is critical.
    Engage compression, check coolant for bubbles (if bubbles, you have a blown head gasket) secure radiator cap, check main engine oil level.
    Turn the fuel on and wait for all cylinders to fire and disengage pilot motor, shut pilot motor off.
    Idle main engine until oil temp and water temp starts to rise, then increase RPM so as not to glaze bore through prolonged idle.
    Winter operation l would stand behind blade to get warm and its a good indicator that the coolent is warming up.
    (Reving a big diesel on a cold start up can snap the Crank.)
    Check oil level while engine is warn and running.
    Your Cat engine will last as long as you when you feed it clean air, clean fuel and regularly change with good quality, correct oils and filters.
    Never put it to work cold.
