As an American I was unfamiliar with this series so I am happy to watch old episodes..I find it fascinating and have learned much about art, the art world and the artists themselves many of whom were known to me and many who were not. It has been quite an education! Thank you, Fiona and Philip!
I understand the need for arbiters to exist to control the attribution of works by particular artists. What I can’t understand is why the art world so often entrusts that authority in just one person who can dismiss a work on a whim. In order for that Nicholson to *not* be by him requires a fantastical - absurd, even - number of coincidences. It is absolutely preposterous that it was rejected.
I absolutely agree!!! I am so angry and believe that the so-called expert’s ego has been the hook in her nose. It happens often enough to be a crime worse than a forgers. Surely there is more recourse to be had?!
This is preposterous! How can the art world allow one person to hold ALL authority on an artist?! I absolutely believe this work belongs to WN and I am so angry and believe wholeheartedly that the so-called expert’s ego has been the hook in her nose. It happens often enough … to be a crime worse than a forgery ! Surely there is more recourse to be had?! Isn’t there?
She rejected it because it would admit that she was wrong as an expert on Nicholson. Probably she makes money from authenticating his work and she spent years building that catalog. And the next time sombody would ask for an expertize it would be like " you know she got one wrong i have seen it on tv" That or maybe vanity in admiting the mistake
In all the episodes I've seen so far, if a painting's authenticity will overturn or contradict an 'expert's' previous opinion, it will always be deemed a fake. These folks never admit to being wrong.
Again - a mad woman given authority over a painting. The Nicholson is obviously authentic down to the damn thumb print under the N. I hope that woman sues
What interest would there be in Nicholson signing the back of another artist’s painting??? It appears to me that the woman who had originally refused to add it to her catalogue is desperately trying to save face for her gross error, in spite of the overwhelming evidence presented by several renowned experts in their fields. Ego trumps reality.
There is absolutely no way that Nicholson painting isn’t authentic. I can’t believe the way the art world works-to give one woman that much power…it’s bound to go to her head. Her pride and ego won’t allow her to admit she was wrong, and everybody just stands by and watches this happen and does nothing. How on Earth Fiona and Philip can co-sign this bullshit is beyond me. Hope this way of doing things changes at some point, because it’s completely subjective instead of being based on facts-the facts in this case being that the proof that “Glass Jug” is authentic is beyond sufficient.
This WN debacle is an ABSOLUTE OUTRAGE. The piece is clearly his work. This is a travesty of justice. We all know this painting is unequivocally authentic. judgement is worthless and the perpetrator will get theirs in time for this behaviour..

I'm surprised that the owners of the works turned down by the "experts" don't sue in the courts. Do the experts have legal standing? I can't imagine so. Yet they often make decisions that deprive the owners of a great deal of money.
Sadly, there is no legal recourses. The thing is these leading experts that write these reference books of a total of the known artists works once turn down a piece for listing, they become like a rock because without something that isn't possible for them to argue they will not change their opinion. It is their right to leave out any piece for any reasons, however when they leave one out it leaves the question of if it is real...the fact in the one case that the science experts that examined said not only was it same paint but done in exact same way the signature even paints from a year later would be different and a handwriting expert said the writing was his. With all evidence the art expert created that catalog of works said it was done on his board by possibly a student that was next to him with his writing paints. In all reality it is most likely ego that she doesn't want to change her opinion. There has been great fights just with ego over pieces that have astounding provenance, scientific evidence, yet they are simply not going to change their minds so the object is left in a form of purgatory until there is a new top expert panel that releases a catalog that is considered the most completed and authentic.

What was the rush to get the Lautrec material to the committee BEFORE they had all their evidence ? Why couldn't they wait the few extra months until the committee returned and submit their evidence then ? I thought it was simply ridiculous to submit anything if you don't have all your evidence ❗
I think that the comparison between the amount of evidence with the Nicholson and Gainsborough vs. the Henry Moore case, compared to the result of the jury is just so annoying. The Henry Moore had way less compelling evidence yet was accepted with such delight. Nicholson and Gainsborough had substantial evidence yet was denied.
I love the though that the artists probably painted rubbish just to see how far these pundits went to verify or justify a crappy looking painting bringing it to the fore front of what the customer expected then the revealing of fools believing anything giving the artist more impetus to produce less and receive more.
I admire art forgers. They create valor out of thin air, as if they were wizards. They exploit the gullibility of the rich people who usually got rich by exploiting the gullibility of the poor people. Counterfeiters deceive arrogant experts and secure profits for self-described ethical art dealers. They usually have deep knowledge of the materials they use and are sophisticated psychologists, always attentive to the secret desires that art historians express between the lines of their works. Anyone can be an artist, but it takes a really brave artist to be a great art forger.
Best thing about this series -Its not often you get to see rich people so disappointed! Sorry you'll be financially devastated now and have to sell off all your expensive houses and live in a cheap apartment, OH NOOOOO a fate worse than death! haha! the few regular people involved arent nearly as destroyed because theyre used to being screwed by the system!
Its not that... This case is complicated by the fact that the sculpture in question may have undergone repairs that suggest a substantial portion of the restoration was not executed by the original artist’s hand. This nuance renders it impossible to approve without reservation. That said, the fact that the committee has refrained from making a hasty decision is, in itself, a remarkable display of openness to whatever new evidence may surface. It reflects an entirely an ethos that demonstrates a commitment to thoroughness and due diligence. In my view, their current verdict is entirely sound. At the same time, I hold out hope - albeit faint - that some small detail will emerge which could confirm that the work was either completed by the artist himself or under his direct supervision. If that were to happen, this would transform the piece from being a work by the artist with questionable repairs, into a true work by him, albeit one that has undergone restoration.
