Ratchet and clank is 20 years old this year so I took it upon myself to jump back into this wonderful game and explore the good and the bad of ratchet and clank 20 years later. We explore the desert like Veldin and even Captain Qwarks HQ, all whilst buying cool new weapons and gadgets to make it to our final goal defeating Drek and finding out if ratchet and clank still holds up 20 years later.
We look at the story, characters, gameplay, and delve into ratchet and clanks rocky relationship as they start off as acquaintances, have a falling out, and then by the end save the day and become an iconic duo!

One of my favorite games of all time. Rift apart was good, but it pales in comparison. It just doesn’t have the edginess
Gonna have to agree with you there whilst I love all the games so much the original where great ratchet and clank wherent special in any way and way more relatable then the ps3 games onwards.
I will always love the new games so much but the stories I feel where just a little better during the ps2 era of games.
It even changed from rated T to E

This is easily one of my favourite game series of all time! Thank you for making this and doing something a bit different. I'm glad they added all of the Ratchet games more or less to PS+

Unfortunately in Australia where I live they don't have the ps3 catalogue for ps+ so we and many other countries with poor internet didn't get access to it which is hugely disappointing but we can only hope down the road we will get it!

First Ratchet & Clank for me is No.1 game from 2002/03 to nowdays.
nothing for me is better than this everlasting pearl.
Although RC2 would bring welcome additions gameplay wise, the original just feels like a complete masterpiece made out of both talent, love, and passion. Unlike RC3 for instance which feels rushed at points (and it was), RC1, although a bit more difficult to come back to gameplay-wise, feels 100% like the game it should have been, and is an incredible nostalgia bomb.
A memory of better times, when the PS2 seemed like the top of futuristic gaming devices, and of our childhood. ❤️
A Crack in Time, later on, was pretty great too, but they never did manage to recreate the magic formula of the original trilogy.

Recently just replayed the whole first game for the first time since I was about 10-11 and I’ve been playing R&C since I was about 6 or so. Completely agree Nostalgia check! Complete originality that gives it its own flavor check!! It actually seemed almost too easy for me when I cheap shotted all the tough enemies with the visiting and rocket launcher but then I ran into the planet where you can’t you clank and that really made me remember how hard that game was and still is when you only get 4-5 health on a first new game play-through. Although the movement with combat feels noticeable clunky and the no strafing kinda sucks and I feel like the weapons never auto aimed at the right distances so I don’t think some of those gameplay aspects carry the greatest here 20+ years later although it doesn’t hinder my enjoyment of the game one bit🤪
I like the og ratchet and Clank but prefer the new one. Though I wish the 2016 one had an arena.

One thing that bothered me is why does Ratchet have his ears down in the cutscenes but up in normal gameplay (unless he is low on health)?

In the OG Version, the Thruster Pak isn't really an Upgrade for the Helipak.
It has new moves and is faster, BUT it has a slightly lower Jump High.
On Planet Veldin (2), after jumping over a few circle shaped platforms, there is a High Jump location that is not clearable with the Thruster Pak in the PAL PS2 Version.
I always found it weird, that this changed in the PS3 Version.
It's because of the refresh rate. You probably played on 50hz on PS2. If you play the PS3 version in standard definition then the same issue will happen, but you're likely playing it in high definition with 60hz.
Similarly, on the PAL PS3 version, if played in 60hz, the pyrocitor does an insane amount of damage to drek.

Honestly there's good reason for that too.
Naughty dog and insomniac worked very closely together when those two games where in development.
Then spyro makes sense because insomniac literally made both these games.
So yeah it's no coincidence! I love every one of those games! Grew up on spyro especially. I wouldn’t be surprised if that's why I love ratchet and clank so much.

I'm glad Ratchet got a movie and a remake but man... the movie could have been brilliant following this story instead of whatever the hell they chose to do with it.

I was super excited for the movie, Sadly they got Hollywood writers to write the film so it didn't have the charm the original had because I don't think they fully understood the characters and plot of the game.
It sad they made ratchet a dam captain Qwark Boy Scout when in the OG games he saw through Qwark bull💩 1-3 will always be the best games

Sly as well as Jak and daxter are actually both on my list I'm planning on doing the ratchet and clanks series first then move on to those two series!
5:15 I dunno I always saw Novalis as an easy noob level even as a child because I had already beat Kerwan and Rilgar in the demo so many times. It never really stood out as anything to me besides the first planet you could return to as well as the home of the Plumber
Sorry, but no, they never really improved the Gameplay... they changed the genre from a Plattformer to a Shooter, and changed the Controls based on this. You really should know this, after watching the Retrospectives from The Golden Bolt.
It is still a platformer at heart and improving on the gun combat. It definitely does improve the gameplay with the second game.
I'd actually say the second game is more of an in between the 1st and the 3rd game.
So I would agree the genre definitely changes in the 3rd to be more of a shooter but with the second game it's best of both worlds in my opinion.
And then theres deadlocked/gladiator which is straight up not a platformer in the slightest.
Still brilliant but not a platformer.
Ps3 and onwards I think jumps back to its roots of having more of a platformer aspect to it.
Was way ahead of it's time.

Yeah your right its something I've noticed and regret about the video. It was the only scene I added music over and it didn't work.
Let's just say if I could go back and change it that would be one of the things I'd change.

Edit: i cant agree with the statement of it only having improved from "here on out"... i think the 3rd game and deadlocked went to try a new format that imo was a few steps back... the psp games were pretty poorly recieved too and while the story has always been decent or rushed it really took a nosedive in the ps3 generation and onwards... as in straight up lying to the audience to squeeze in an overly contrived disney princess plot... and retconning the established story to do so...
I love RAC a crapton, and i replay the games every so often just for nosgalgia and fun, but i feel we have to recognise it for what it is, we can still love the franchise ❤
i remain angry how they completely retconned the entire storyline and so completely warped ratchet's character. the ratchet and clank from the original 3 games + deadlocked are the only real ratchet and clank forever as far as i'm concerned. won't buy any new ratchet games ever again. if they were going to do this to Jak and Daxter too then i'm glad that series was laid to rest after 3 games + Jak X even if i was disappointed there wouldn't be any new jak and daxter games when i was a kid
The reason why they change the story is because in the first ration coin game ratchet came off like an a****** and an a****** back then wasn't very marketable to kids and I asked him right now isn't very marketable with the kids
