    Thanks, Leisa. Tomorrow is our big shopping day, and I took notes. Every week now I can at least 8 jars of protein, so that gives me a net increase of just one jar, but I am cleaning out the freezer before we get a hurricane or tropical storm. I will refill the freezer with jugs of water mostly until hurricane season is over. I am also dehydrating frozen and no. 10 cans of veggies. Oils are a forever foods when stored in the freezer, if space allows. I'd rather can meats as soon as possible so I have space in the freezer for olive oil, which I use extensively in my cooking. Olive oil has been increasing in price dramatically over the last few years. So that one I make space for when I find it at a good price.
    Flours, grains, rice, pulses: The problem with those is they can harbor bugs after a few months storage. Put a bay leaf per 10 pounds in them. I empty the packages in large jars and insert bay leaves. No bugs will ever spoil them. I've been protecting my dry foods stocks with bay leaves for the last 20 years. Never ever had a problem.

    • @ZoubidaPA
      @ZoubidaPA 2 года назад +1

      @@marinigrey4913 Never thought of soda bottles. Nice repurpose. The bugs I'm talking about are weevils. They lay their eggs in the grains or pulses while still in the in the field, or sometimes in previously infested storage or transport. They hatch few months after, when the grain or pulse is in a pantry somewhere. I've had them a long time ago and it freaked me out. That's when I learned of them and how to protect my stocks from them. Bay leaves have a scent that kill/prevent hatching of the buggers. Thanks for the soda bottle trick.

    I've focused on whole nutrient dense foods. One thing I've bulked up on that many Americans don't eat is sea vegetables. Sea vegetables (wakame, dulse, kelp, etc.) are loaded with iodine, B12, omega 3, vitamins A, C & E, spirulina, chlorella, iron, calcium, and more. As is, 2 year shelf life but repackaging extends life just like other dried plants.

    • @namehere4954
      @namehere4954 2 года назад +4

      @@firehorsewoman414 no, not really. You could take smoked dulse and pan fry it and I'd say that would be your best bet as it's seen as an alternative bacon. But if you can't stand it, I'd say skip it altogether and just stick to other nutrient dense plants you do enjoy as this planet gives us soooo many options! Herbs have especially high antioxidant values hence their pungent/bold flavors & aromas.

      Kind of makes you think the ultra rich/political class don't care if the rest of us commoners/peasants suffer as long as they aren't inconvenienced with power outages. They preach/lecture/ and pass mandates to decrease "carbon emissions" for the commoners/peasants yet they continue their lifestyle and live in comfort.
      Years ago, my Mom was forced to switch to using an oxygen concentrator instead of having the huge oxygen tanks in her house. The problem was Southern California electricity was unreliable with the routine brownouts and blackouts. No electricity meant the oxygen concentrator wouldn't work and she needed continuous oxygen at 3 liters/min. Her Oxygen saturation would quickly go down to 70 to 75% WITH the supplemental oxygen by simply walking from her bedroom to the kitchen. She would have to sit and recover for about 15 minutes to get her oxygen saturation back up to 89 to 90%.
      These power outages can be a death sentence for people like you and my Mom. I don't think the political elite care. My Mom finally had to purchase a gas powered generator and pay to have an electrician to connect the power to several power outlets in her house so her oxygen concentrator would function during a power grid blackout.

      I ordered 6 cases of wide mouth quarts, and 8 of wide mouth pints 2 months ago from Walmart online.

    May I ask where you order your canning jars from? Thank you! SO appreciate your wisdom and calm delivery. Especially in these times.

      Last Christmas we were making pecan pie and ran out of Kayro syrup. There was only 1 left in the store! That's one item we won't forget again. Now I am going through recipes to be sure I have everything I need. 🙂

      @@theGEnericE For sure....sometimes it is only Kayro that works. Pecan pie is one of them.

    Always looking for ideas I haven't thought of....for instance, Capers, I love capers, I can't live without capers, lol. I can get huge jars of capers from costco but I don't want to open such big jars. Now, I'm opening up those jars, and reusing condiment jars from the grocery store to can make many many small jars.
