The bigger question is how does an 8GB ram option still exist? Again most folks like myself are buying Apple products for the ecosystem but doesn't mean I agree with their prices on upgrades. The storage upcharges are ridiculous!
I'm sure you probably know this already, but certain countries that are more cost conscious require an 8GB option - most of them though have already moved to a bare 16GB option even in mainstream model laptops.
@@InDadequate Ok sure but can we talk about how much ram modules cost? Surely in the volume that Apple buys in 16GB of memory can't be that expensive
@@ahaimes6320 I know it’s hard to know exactly what “unified” memory is but you can’t tell me 2 TB of SSD storage costs $800 from the 256GB storage on the base model.
32GB of Crucial DDR 5 at 5600 do not even cost $200 at retail price.
@@jeanjasinczuk7543 I know! Apple Koolaid drinkers will say “unified memory” is not the same but come on. I know their SSD chips aren’t faster than the Gen 5 chips found on Samsung 990 Pro SSDs. The iPhone Pros have 8 GB of memory in them so there’s that too.
Apple pricing is in-your-face disrespectful. But some of the other OEMs do it as well, like Dell, Razor, and Asus ROG. I feel that their pricing for what you get is shenanigans, too.
The reality is they are getting away with it because the common person buying them doesn't know any better. All they see is the brand.
Once ONE company tested the waters and customers accepted it, there was no incentive in driving prices down.
it's not because people are sheep, it's because their products are actually better for most people and most use cases. If you don't wanna buy a new one, just buy a used M1 Pro or whatever
@@burtdanams4426@burtdanams4426 Even a used one is the price of some of the new PCs that are better. Just saying. These rediculs prices is the reason I stop buying them back in the intel days. SMH
Excellent video, AMD! I agree that Apple’s pricing is offensive, but no one is forcing anyone to pay it. My long disappointing experience with Windows laptops from Dell, HP, and Acer made me an unapologetic MacBook fanboy. I picked up an M3 Air 13” 16/1TB for $800 with my M1 Air trade-in. This M3 Air will last me at least 5 years. I’ve never owned a Windows laptop that made it past 2 years without needing multiple service calls.
My friend is still running a macbook pro 2011 in 2024. The secret sauce for him was to factory upgrade to an SSD at purchase.
Have to disagree with you there, I've been using my HP Zbook Fury Workstation Laptop for about 5 years now. I paid a hefty price tag for it at the time, but it still works like a charm it has a core i9-9880H, and Nvidia Quadro RTX 3000 graphics card. It still runs excellent... so I definitely have to disagree with you there, if you're willing to spend the money, then windows laptops will take care of you for a long time, I know HP's laptops will.
what if im searching for the battery life and performance with the same cost , is the air 15' is the best for me ?
I checked your review of the Asus Zenbook 14 Oled and the HP X360 (great format by the way!). Both of these have much worse microphone quality compared to any recent MacBook to an extent where they both sound metallic, hollow and or low bitrate in comparison. Is there a comparatively good alternative in the Windows world when it comes to microphones (and maybe also webcams?). It‘s these small things (which are big for my use case) which still make me bite the bullet and pay the premium but I‘d be happy to check out alternatives.
What do you think regarding HP Dragonfly G4 compared to Spectre? Isn't it a better option?
Thanks for the review, I appreciate your honesty. I was somehow interested but I guess that won't be for this year either.
Can't say about the notch as I've yet touched the new chassis since the M1.
But aside that we don't get another port from the other side (would have been useful as I have some cables on the right), they still didn't add any webcam cover.
Most of Windows' laptop nowaday do have either one or a kill switch.
Ive never owned a mac but i have had several dell laptops that always end up doing the same thing, super noisy fan, terrible battery and runs hot, even just doing simple tasks. Is there a windows laptop that is quiet, great battery and good thermals?
I recommend ASUS VivoBook Go E1504FA Oled 15.6 inch with AMD Radeon AMD Ryzen 5 7520U igpu Amd 610m graphics card.
15.6", 1920 x 1080 pixels, OLED, 60 Hz, Windows 11 Home.
I have versions with 8 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD, but there are versions with 16 GB RAM.
These are 8GB/16GB memory cubes, LPDDR5 very fast 5500.
First of all, it is cheap, the battery lasts 10 hours, complete silence, in the normal balanced mode of the laptop on battery the fan does not turn on at all.
But when I connect the charger, the fan turns on, but really quietly, only when it starts charging the batteries.
After disconnecting the charger, the fan does not work and there is complete silence.
It will boot up unless you're doing a heavy task, like an 8K RUclips video, or some older games that only run at 1280-800p.
Quake 2 Remaster at 1920-1080p runs nicely.
The sound is very good, in general the only minus of the laptop is the lack of a backlit keyboard, but be careful, in other markets such as India and Spain there is a backlit keyboard, I have been using the laptop for 5 months and I am very satisfied.
My Yoga 16 cost $660 w/tax. Has 16" touchscreen, 16 gigs and 1T. Apple is ripping people off.
And when that Yoga's hinges break, it'll be worth $6.60.

Specs only mean so much and go so far. What really matters is the software experience. We already know Windows is not known for a glorious user experience.
@ahaimes6320 those also can be considered to expensive as well. It is not to say they are not more expensive devices that have good value I mean refurbished macbooks like the m2pro are great etc.

No punches were pulled in the making of this review. Thanks for your honesty, Andrew. It truly is a travesty just how low-spec'd these devices start and how exorbitant the upgrades are.

+$600 for ssd upgrade is outrageous; that's almost the price of my new laptop. I just followed your recommendation and bought this 82YN0010US Lenovo yoga 7i (13gen i5-1340P with 16GB ram, upgradable 512GB SSD, 2.4K touch Display 100sRGB - 400 nits and comes with pen in the box, and a battery that lasts 2 days) for $720 new from the Lenovo website with the student discounts they have. I could not be happier with the snappiness and the display. -- note: upgrading from an ancient macbook.
Hlo sir I'm really confused between asus laptops or lenovo laptops please recommend me is asus zenbook is better or lenovo ideapad.. please
Please check mini PCs as well, like ms-01 minisforum
I think that Apple maybe, just maybe underestimated HP and ASUS and the 2024 14/16 Spectre is an awful lot closer than it historically has been to the MacBook Pro. The 32Gb+2TB spectre 14 might actually be better than the Apple alternatives.
I appreciate the engineering required to get that much power out of a passively cooled, totally silent machine. That has a lot of appeal for some use cases, even though they don't have the prettiest screens anymore and their connections are severely lacking.
But the pricing is obscene. And pairing that excellent processor with 8GB of ram and 256GB is frankly an insult, not just to the customer but to the engineers who designed the rest of that device.
Andrew can you review Macbook pro M3 14" 🥺
Thanks for your honest and informative review. You presentation gives credence to “ there are quality alternatives to the apple . “
As usual, great review with none of the BS. This is a straight-shooter's review
Thanks 🙏
Thanks for calling out the absurd price apple is asking for those hilarious upgrades.
I ended up getting a base model (factory refurbished, couldn’t tell the difference from new) M1 Pro 16”. $1269 + tax and it has the 120hz mini led display 👍.
I was all about getting a 15in 16gb or 24gb ram version until I found out it only had 60hz refresh rate. At that point at $1699 or $1899 it wasn’t worth the price.
Exactly
are there any laptops out there with speakers as good as the macbooks?? I'm thinking of the HP Spector or Lenovo Yoga pro...
Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 have excellent speakers. Lenovo Yoga 9i as well.
When does anyone play laptop speakers loudly?
If you are home you ain't listening to your laptop.
If you are in public you are using earbuds or headphones.
@@RK-um9tu friends do exist you know...
dell xps laptops have excellent speakers and also have similar track pads and build quality to mac books. The new ones arent good value though.
The price of this laptop is high, but there is kind of a reason for. The efficiency, performance per watt of Apple silicon is off the charts, and Apple is definitely not giving you that for free. The high efficiency is also reflected in the price.
However, I still think Apple’s RAM and SSD upgrades are rip-offs, especially you cannot upgrade on your own, unless you do micro-soldering yourself.
I got a Dell Inspiron 16 Plus 7630, with an i7-13620H, 2TB SSD, 32GB RAM, RTX 4060, with a 120hz IPS display, on a crazy sale for $1050 USD + tax. Oh, and the SSD and RAM can both be user-upgraded. Apple is very anti-consumer, and has been for well over a decade by now. Unless you NEED to use a specific software that only runs on Apple machines, then there's literally no point in buying an Apple laptop unless you enjoy paying more money for less specs.
Now calculate, how much would it cost you to have similar setup but as desktop - with decent, LARGE 4k display, unlimited thermals, quiet ..... Apple has gone to far, to be sure and value for money started diminishing, but M1 MBA is nice proposition.
15” air 16/512 setup that u got, costs almost 2300$ in Sweden. You are lucky living in US. *update, the HP is 2200$, the Zenbook is 1900$ in Sweden. Last year home electronics got very expensive, like minimum 35% more.
Appreciate the objective take. Do u think its reasonable an M2 Air 15 (16/1tb) at $1500 brfore tax? I was debating that or go get m3 or now m1 bec pricing is so outlandish
Get baseline MBP 14" with M1 Pro and enjoy rest of the money....

Please do the new hp pavillion plus 14 with the ultra 7 155h. Im gonna pass on this MacBook. Hp seems like the way to go for me.
If you get the base model its ok but once you start upgrading it you might as well get a refurbished m1pro or above that costs about the same or even less.
In a world where the Dell XPS 16 has an OLED screen in its base price, physical function buttons, better cooling, more TDP in the GPU and finally hdmi and usb a port, would it be more recommended than the MacBook Air 15"?
I would have to say that the Dell XPS 16 would compete with the MacBook Pro 16 and not the MacBook Air 15. Two different categories of laptops in my opinion. I would classify the MackBook Air as a mid-range laptop whereas the Dell XPS 16 is a flagship laptop.
Ok, with the improvements I mentioned and a competitive price, would Dell go back to what it was before? For me, the xps 16 with those improvements would be a safe purchase, I hope next year it will be like that :) @@andrewmarcdavid
A lot of companies are screwing us with having their RAM and (especially) SSD soldered on in 2024 :(
I have always been a Windows and Linux user. Since 2022 I been using an old (2015) MBP with 8GB of RAM as a daily driver, and I am very happy with it and Apple's ecosystem. Upgrading to a new MBA is definitely a possibility next year but the price of the upgrades is very hard to swallow.
Excellent work as always Mr David
I appreciate that
no mercy
The entire review had me in stitches, but I agree with everything that was said! I still decided to buy one because of the positives: the large display, great speakers, solid build quality, while being this thin and most of all fanless (dead silent) and having AMAZING battery life. You just can't find another laptop that checks all these boxes. Their engineers did an amazing job.
I begrudgingly paid the upgrade to 16GB RAM but I kept the 256GB base storage, I can't deal with paying another €230 for a mere extra 256GB storage. I bought an USB4 SSD enclosure with a 4TB SSD for €339 and rather deal with external storage than paying Apple those ridiculous prices.
I don't particularly care for that, I care about performance and the HP Zbook Studio G10 running on a Linux Ubuntu operating system smokes even a Macbook M2 Pro Max in data science benchmarks, it's not even close... so you can have your aesthetics, I just want raw performance and power and windows laptops bring it in every category.
Just thankful I bought a gold 8/8 core 16 gb 1 tb, M1 launch nov 15, 2020 $1,440 runs great and still 95% battery health.
I picked up the HP - Spectre 2-in-1 14" 2.8K OLED Touch-Screen Laptop open box for $1,024 at Best Buy. Nice laptop. The OLED screen is really nice and the keyboard is really nice.
Also, I think you are underselling the value of having such a high single core performance. A huge percentage of the applications that people use are single core or only need a limited amount of multicore activity. Getting 3150 single core vs 2300 is massive in terms of performance for most applications
I stated clearly that this has superior single core performance
very fair. As a mackbook pro user in work and a windows book in entertainment.
The M1 that is really a stunning break through. But now for M3. Come on... the price there... well.. 8Gb RAM ... Am I a joke to you?
Andrew thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos !
Regarding the laptop itselft, the value is in the base model.
Also, based on personal experience it will age better that its windows counterparts.
Finally someone calls them out. Thank you!!! I have been saying this for a while now. Giving you less for a lot of money.
Nice review. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
The original 13 inch measured 15 inch across
I liked this right away, just because of the thumbnail, lol... I personally think that Apple is going to be pressed for competition, once the Snap Dragon X Elite chips start showing up in more machines. My 2016 MackBook Air, offered way more value for its time, than the last couple generations of the Air. They just hobble it way too much, purely to keep it from cannibalizing the entry level Pro line.
Thanks for the great review. Most reviewers on RUclips wax lyrically that the new model shows fingerprints somewhat less than before, but yours was an honest review of a very pedestrian, overpriced laptop with no material changes since the last model.
If you use the macbook like a laptop.. using it on the go and unplugged I'll bet it destroys the asus or HP.. in performance and battery life.. and heat.. and of course fan noise. I've been all Windows since 1992 since my first Packard Bell... but a few weeks ago I bought my first macbook the M3 13" with 16/256 ... yeah it was $1500 but it's so much better as a laptop than my last few laptops.. Surface Laptop .. Thinkpad Nano and Carbon. And yeah those laptops are semi upgradeable but they are very similar in price and the Thinkpads can be even more. I'm running Parallels/Windows 11 on it and it's definitely better than those. I'm getting sick of being disappointed by hot/loud fans and terrible battery life that I've always had issues with on Windows laptops. Yeah I'd like a high refresh and an oled screen but what good are they when performance is lacking and your worried about your battery life.
Can someone help me , what does "plus tax" mean in US ? For example, i'm interested in a laptop that costs 1500 usd in USA and is not available in EU at the moment and i have a friend that takes business trips to US frequently, if we order the unit from Dell's site with delivery to Washington DC, it will cost more than 1500 usd that are listed on site ? Thank You
Sales Tax varies state by state in the US. For instance here in Las Vegas, Nevada, there is a sales tax of 8.38% which means that the $1,699.00 charged by Apple will cost $1,840.02 all in.
@@andrewmarcdavid Thank you for the reply, i understand that when you shop on-line, at the end you pay the entire amount with tax added according to the state you live in ?

Thank you Andrew for this review as I was very close to buying a Macbook Air, but more interested in the M2 chip. I use all Apple products, because I like the ease of Air Dropping my artwork from my big IMAC to my iPad and visa-versa and I don't particularly like Windows. That said, I will take a look at your review of the Asus. I need a replacement for my old 2013 Macbook Pro.

Totally agree with the hardware specs and prices, my only issue is I use a windows laptop 8 hours a day at work, I can't stand windows, regardless of hardware specs and prices, I'm damn happy to get back to my Mac, I just can't get myself to like Windows, I've used Windows at work and home since 1997 and Mac since 1994.
THANK YOU.
In my part of the world I think windows laptops are cheating their customers by boasting off their specs and giving very low quality products .it nice to hear that for the similar price point we can get better specs and better perfomence from windows laptops but what's the point if those machines are not at all reliable .I bought the latest Lenovo loq 14700 hx with 4060 , laptop started giving trouble after just 15 days and after 30 days it's dead and now I have to wait for the enginear to repair it. If I am paying something I want it to just work for me at least for 1 year without giving any problems . My friend how had got MacBook Air m2 is just fine we do same kind of work .I think quality really matters a lot not just benchmarks and specs
The sad thing about Apple's CRAZY pricing is that there will still be people paying for it just for the sake of owning an Apple product. Of course, apart from people who REALLY need the OS for their professional work (that's understandable and totally makes more sense), the 'status' thing that comes with Apple is just insane, seeing people willing to spend thousands of dollars on an overpriced piece of tech that they are going to do web browsing or social media thingy while they can go for a much more affordable laptop for that.
Well said.

An important thing to note is that the MBA and base M3 MBP have only Thunderbolt 3 ports if you care about that. You don't get Thunderbolt 4 unless you go to the M3 Pro MBP. In terms of value if you upgrade all three to 16GB RAM/512GB storage, the base M3 Pro MBP 11c/14c with a better cpu, better display, three TB4 ports, and 2GB extra RAM seems like the best value (15" MBA w/16GB/512GB = $1699, base M3 MBP w/16GB/512GB = $1799, base M3 Pro MBP w/18GB/512GB = $1999). The only thing that may be able to touch the base M3 Pro MBP in terms of value would be the 13" MBA with 16GB/512GB for $1499 if you can deal with the smaller 13.6" display and 2 TB3 ports.
Personally, I was able to get a base M3 Pro MBP 11c/14gpu for $1529 on the Apple Certified Refurbished store with an educational discount =).
Thanks for point out that it only has TB3, which I clearly missed as I assumed it would have TB4, making this even more of a non purchase.
@@andrewmarcdavid Yeah really there are only two M3 Macbooks that can be considered entry-level imo. The base 13" Macbook Air for $999 or the base 14" M3 Pro Macbook Pro for $1999. Everything else falls in-between with really no value-add and the "upgrades" are ridiculously-priced.
I also dont know why touch screen laptop battery life is compared to apple laptop. Touchscreen is major user requirement for many people. Thank you for another honest review
Great job as always! You set the gold standard for reviews. Most definitely you have the best graphics & audio.
Wow, thanks!
This one review balances out the 56 reviews done by Max Tech. "Apple has done it again!!!!!"
Your review is spot on and being pissed about price is right on!
Im an Apple fan, but the pricing is outrageous.
Im rocking my M1 MBA that I hardly use. But its a friggin fast laptop.
I don't care that much about refresh rates. The notch doesn’t bother me. I've never needed touchscreen or a pen on a laptop. But I definitely agree that the RAM and SSD drive upgrade prices are ridiculous. However, the inferior battery performance of most Windows PCs is unacceptable for current laptops. What's the point of a portable device that really is not portable? Also, I use a laptop for work, so I don't care about gaming. However, I acknowledge that gaming is very important to many people. If I wanted a MacBook Air, I would probably go for an M2 version or a refurbished laptop.
Thank you

Most honest and the best review of Macbook Air.
I got the ASUS Pro Creator q540 for $950 brand new at best buy. It came with a 3K OLED panel, 1 TB SSD, 16GB of RAM, i9 processor, and RTX 3050 6GB of dedicated video memory. I threw on some 6K videos on that thing, chewed through it. More ports on that too. MacBook Air is a terrible value. If anyone wants a MacBook, get the MacBook Pro instead. You still can't upgrade anything on it, at least you'll get better performance and more ports.
Once had XPS 15. I'll NEVER buy laptstation like you described. I am considering buying M1 Air with 16 GB and currently typing from downclocked i3 7th GEN in Asus Zenbook 410UA. I have NUC with 11th gen Intel but thermals on i5 are dissapointing. I'm moving to MBA-like laptop and working remotely on more powerful machine. I need quiet and responsiveness, not burning thermals, battery that lasts hour of work and farting fan (my company issue HP Zbook ).
@@piotrd.4850 I have a MacBook Pro 16 for video editing. It doesn't make noise, much easier for me to do my voiceovers on my fitness videos that I make. For business, I just use a PC, I use Microsoft office, yes you can install it on a Mac, it just feels weird using it on a Mac. Plus, I can always swap out drives on those, you can't do this on a Mac. For me, I need ports and a processor that can batch process those massive video files. Its not like what you'd do on a MacBook Air. Those are made for web browsing, doing documents, excel, simple things, not for heavy, demanding videos.
I absolutely love the honesty here! Its about time someone calls out apple in an actual human way! I mean this is ridiculous they are robbing people! Good review, your no-bull talk is appreciated BUT I watched this review for advice on MacBooks and not recommendations on which PC to buy as alternatives, so a bit pointless, really.
There is another big issue with all Macbooks. The battery is glued in. That means that it is more difficult to replace the batteries when they inevitably wear out and need replacement.
Thanks Andrew for reviewing, especially as this is with your own hard earned money - it seems that Apple always charges several times as much for the SSd per GB. It's a major ripoff. It's why Apple has such high margins.
In return, Apple has good speakers, good battery life and a good touchpad. Maybe only the Sensel touchpad will be competitive on Windows.
Agreed 👍
when i asked a women about pricing, they said we should get the ssd 512 because is not much more expensive, the value is 1:1 (double the price and double the ssd storage) , so we can see apple was targeting make tech pieces for womens not for pros.

Also totally agree with u how 8GB ram in the base model is bullshit. If it starts at 8gb it should be priced better.
I think it is a crime for what Apple charges for consumer laptops. I got my wife the M1 macBook air and she loves it, but she just surfs the internet, play a few games and online shopping.
The pricing of Apples DRAM and SSD upgrades are way to high. Doubling base memory costs $200. Quadrupling base SSD storage (256GB to 1TB) costs $400. So a 15" Apple M3 with 16GB and 1TB storage costs $1899-- $600 more than their base M3 model with 8GB/256GB SSD at $1299. Ouch!!!
My take is that with AI on the ramp more DRAM memory and SSD storage is needed to make laptops future proof and a better long term solution. Not every Apple consumer can write the cost off as a business expense. The base models are no longer good options. The same can be said for some PC suppliers, but Apple is the worst offender.
Good video colors, good sound. Nothing spectacular, but better than many others.
Having run an M1 MacBook Air with 16GB RAM since 2020, there is no way you can expect to anything but the bare minimum with 8GB RAM. Mac OS is efficient, but not that efficient, and only having 8GB will result in more paging and shorten the life of the SSD. Looking at the price of the new MB Air, the entry-level configuration should have 16GB RAM and 512GB or 1TB SSD, there is no excuse for only having 8GB RAM and I cannot defend Apple's pricing on RAM and storage upgrades at all. However I do really value the lack of fan in the Air, no Windows laptop does this to my knowledge, and there is the issue on-battery performance with Windows laptops. This combined with Mac OS is enough value to pay a bit more for a Mac than I would for a Windows laptop. I just find it a more pleasant experience and I would really struggle to go back to a laptop with a noisy fan.
I love this review. We should be calling out bullshit from companies! Its not a bad device but that price man.
I am glad Andrew is calling out Apple.
Glad I bought my 15 in MBA for $1200.00 open box. 512GB SSD, 16GB ram.
Okay pc. Camera looked okay. Speakers sounded good. Agree that it is way overpriced. Just like Samsung pcs one is paying a premium for these units with the name "Apple" or "Samsung" on them. I would suggest you return it if you are still able as well as with those Samsung units you purchased. Great review as always.
Thanks William. Yeah, this is not a keeper for sure.
It is clear that Apple charges a lot. That is also strategic, given the large advantage of Apple in term of performance at the moment. Would you price you Ferrari at the price of a prius, you also want to show that you value your product. Price are low for windows based laptop because of feirce competition since these are just hardware manufacturer - Apple is its on ecosistem which has planty of value. Also nobody forces you to buy Apple, there is no need to get angry. As job Said during sn interview, either it works out for Apple or it doesn’t, the public choses.
That said, always like your videos Andrew, please more !
please also review MSI gaming laptops, i havn't found any MSI laptop review on your channel. i likes your laptop review content and quality is very high.
I think the “no matter what brand” is the sticking point. If you believe the numerous testing on the storage and RAM advantages that Apple’s SOC architecture has over the Intel chips, then yes, it’s fair. The entire 2020 year, the base M1 chip was tested and re-tested and it was fair. 2024 and we’re still waiting, now it’s on Snapdragon X Elite.
You Guys are onto something, same tone as just josh exact same agenda like he grilled Dell for XPS 14 and 16.
Agreed the xps 14 and 16 seem like money pits this year.
@@alfredoaraujo9294 and poorly designed.
Everyone has a head to reason! MBA M1 16/512GB is the only one so far that that's worth buying even in 2024! I bought this machine for my daughter in 2020 and it still rocks. If you'd like something powerful for video editing just build your own PC and you'll see that macbook pro is no match! I've been doing video editing for more than 20 years besides all top-notch plugins are available only for PC!!
Major ripoff. Of course, it's a luxury brand, no matter what they are trying to pretend to be...but their value proposition is ridiculous.
The only reviewer that speaks the truth. The rest just simp for apple!
m1 pro 16 inch is 1600
