in defence of the ghoul skin looking rubbery: I have burn scars on a large portions on my body and that's kinda just how they look
Good point.
So weird to see you reviewing something big and popular like this haha.
Its why I added the little bit at the end where I usually avoid this stuff but my love of Fallout made me check it out. I'm glad I did.
@@GoodBadFlicks i think you're going to like the rst of the series. as a fellow fallout fan [NEW VEGAS, BABY!!!] your gonna go "Oh, i know that!!"
Fun fact: Ella Purnell auditioned for Alita and almost got the part.
They wouldn't have needed CG!
@@GoodBadFlicks 😳🤣
@@GoodBadFlicks lmao XD
@@GoodBadFlicks I still didn't mind how Alita looked, but that's funny.
She's also the voice of Jinx in Arcane.
Ella even said she knows the game and the lore... Good to see an actor know what she going into... Like an other UK actor
Well 4 episodes in and it's kept the tone and pace up, really enjoying this!
The hair stood up on the back of my neck this is amazing
Cecil just watched the pilot because he had to get back to his Emmanuelle In Space binge-watch session. “It’s ART, honey! ART!”

They had me at Walton Goggins. I'd watch that dude read a phone book.
I had no interest in this show until this review pointed out that Walton Goggins is in it. I might have to give this a shot after all.
@@cactoidpinata Same here!
@@TonyBaseballs23have u seen him in Justified?
@@cactoidpinatawatched episode 1 it’s good so far
He's so good. I love him in vice principals.
Binge watched the whole Season One last night. I won't share any spoilers, except for the fact that this series is MUCH better than it has any right to be. There are a COUPLE of "WTF" moments, both in the storytelling and canonical aspects. If you play FO1, FO3 and FO4 you'll see a ton of Easter Eggs.
You can see someone broke a toaster with a knife in the other vault.
It’s literally retconning the entire franchise. But each to their own
@@lomborg4876 That 'retcon' has been a long time coming. Chris Avellone wanted to kill off the NCR as well.
@@lomborg4876 Not really, i mean yes there are changes but this takes place post-games, they fudged up some dates and some other more spoilery details but it's a tv adaptation what were you expecting?
Never realized you were into fallout. For me, I was pleasantly surprised with the first episode. I went in expecting not to like it at all. So far so good to me.
You must be new to the channel. Cecil loves anything post-apocalyptic lol
@@Axolotl_Mischief wow, you seem so knowledgeable.
Maximus is a protagonist in very specifically Fallout Tactics, Lucy is a protagonist in vanilla Fallout, and The Ghoul is a protagonist in modded Fallout.
When Lucy is making her case at the beginning, what she rattles off is a SPECIAL stats sheet right out of the game.
The Ghoul isn’t a resurrected gunslinger, he was originally a movie/TV cowboy actor.
Yeah but his Ghoul version is literally presented as being dug up and released from a coffin soooo....
Uhh, he was shown being resurrected in the first episode 😂
It literally says 219 years later... And then he's back lol.
Ghouls can survive for hundreds of years if they aren't feral (he isn't). I think the coffin was like a prison, he was alive the whole time and being kept alive with radaway
I think for non-fallout fans some of it may be a bit confusing, but overall I reckon they introduced things nicely for non-fans to enjoy (my partner enjoyed and doesn't play videogames)
@@darksaber2k yeah and he had been there for I believe 21 years because someone he ticked off was keeping him like that so he could come back once a year and cut off another part of him.
0:57 - The icon is a skull. That's good.
Good shout! I didn't notice that.
Hadn't noticed that either. It was really obvious when seeing the smaller version by mousing over that point in the video.
@@evilbob840 Hey, evilbob840! What's your brother goodbob420 up to nowadays? Is he still volunteering at that homeless shelter, or has he finally started that school for the blind he was talking about?
@@jamesnoland7821 People wanna know?????
I only realized it a minute ago. I missed it whenever I previously saw the poster image.
Are you thinking of doing the entire series? Loving it so far. Ella Purnell is pretty good in yellowjackets
I was pleasantly surprised at how good the pilot was. Glad you liked it too.
I don't know who is older: You, for referencing the Commodore 64, or me for getting the reference.
You're both old! lol!!
I know the feeling. I never played one, but I knew of it.
I watched the first 2 episodes last night and I loved it. I think it hits different if you're a fan of the games though. Seeing some of the stuff in a material format was amazing. The multiple protagonist angle has been done but they rarely come together that quick. There's a moment in episode 1 that is a solid example of dramatic irony(the audience knows something a character does not) that everyone should watch for. The opening scene was extremely well done.
Sadly that's all I can say without spoilers.
I just watched the pilot and its surprisingly entertaining. Ella Purnell offered a great performance as a vault dweller, oblivious to the world outside of her vault and Walton Goggins is already irreplaceable as the ghoul. But Aaron Moten's interrogation scene struck a particular cord. I'll be watching for more scenes with him.
Watching more episodes with him, I like him a lot. He and Lucy both have a certain naivety from their isolated upbringing, but his time in the Brotherhood gives him a dispassionate distance from the violence of the wasteland, whereas Lucy is still adapting to it and using her innate pragmatism to survive. Both are very charming together, and their interactions as a duo can be both incredibly dark AND surprisingly wholesome.
Thank you for doing this man... Love your vids
Thanks for watching!
I laughed at the eyes comment, I had to look the actress up to see if they'd cgi'd her. But no, her eyes are really that big. She's stunning
I just finished watching it last night and thought there were a few things I didn’t like, I thought it was amazing! I hear they are green lighting a second season and I am totally there for it!
Ella Parnell has the prettiest big eyes. Glad someone else noticed. IK Elle from Yellow Jackets, highly recommend, and that’s one of the reasons I tuned in. I was pleasantly surprised. Would love an exploring Fall Out.
She has level 6 anime eyes.
I forgot it was coming out this week. With your recommendation, I'm happy for the reminder!
I would say each character feels like a fallout protagonist.
Kinda like Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics had default player characters to choose.
What impressed me is how mood was different from each backstory.
Lucy is like Bethesda Fallout Protagonist.
Ghoul is like The Courier from New Vegas.
The Knight is... He reminds me of someone but I cannot put my finger on it yet.
Edit.
Ohhh, I think he might remind me Desert Rangers.
the best newer TV show I've seen recently has been Netflix's 'Blue Eye Samurai' - stunning writing/acting/animation
So far Walter Goggins is the extreme highlight, especially from that hell of a beginning. I’m loving this show so far.
The intro was terrific. I loved the restraint where they didn't show it right away. Even though you knew what was happening, you could feel the tension.
Looking forward to your 'exploring' video for the Amazon Fallout at some distant point in the future!
Glad to hear a positive review like this. I've been hearing a lot of positive buzz about it, but it's almost at the point where I feel I can't trust it. But you're a trusted source for me, so I'll give it a go.
Its like I said, when I saw the IGN review I was extremely worried. It doesn't deserve a 9 but considering they gave RoP an 8 (which really should be more like a 4) I'll agree it deserves to be a higher grade. Thankfully, it seems to be good so far.
Thanks. I like the balanced look at this.
Thanks!
Confession, I bought Fall Out 1 close to release, but I'd never played an rpg and gave up real quick. Didn't understand the math, the mechanics, or all the reading at age 15ish. Now rpgs or action rpgs are staples of my gaming time.
The Critical Drinker gave it a good review. Cecil, you should get together on his Drinking After Hours Live. You would be good on there.
I'd happily go on if invited.
I'm hooked after the first two episodes. Hope it keeps it up. The production design is top level!!
The ghoul had a name in the beginning of the damn show. His name was Cooper Howard. He was the cowboy actor at the birthday party.
I realize that. I'm saying that for the show itself, it seems they just call him "The Ghoul"
I only made it 40 minutes in before having to turn it off lucys story pretty much doesnt exist for me. Had they not set up the story to have vault ,31,32,33 all linked with the overseer of 31 responsibile for the other two vaults: they made way too many isses for me to ignore. As 31 would have been alerted to 32s overtake and not to mention Lucy's wedding dress and them mentioning meeting the other dwellers every few years for weddings. So you would have know there was an issue as soon as the door opened and it just spiraled from there...
Looking forward to the full series review, my dude.
Considering she's the lead here and Jinx in Arcane, I'm starting to think Ella Purnell might be a good luck charm for video game adaptations. Probably exaggerating, but if I'm write... PUT HER IN THE ZELDA MOVIE STAT!
I actually thought her eyes where digitally enlarged ala Alita. Made me LOL when you agreed.
I will always praise the power armor, especially since they actually built them for real. I was worried that they would all be CGI.
Gotta appreciate that they kept them clunky but not entirely unwieldy, and once one gets involved in a fight it is pretty dangerous. Although you still gotta watch out for Yao Guai.
Was so skeptical going into watching this series but its pretty dang good. If someone is bashing on it really hard, ask them if their favorite Fallout was New Vegas. If they say yes then you can pretty much discount anything they say because NV fans are NEVER happy with anything Bethesda related. I don't really care much for how the BoS is portrayed but it seems to be a running joke with Fallout to change the BoS every time a new game comes out so that checks with this. Want to see more Enclave and hoping to see some X-01 armor (Im about halfway through the season).
Watched the first two episodes and I can say that the second is more of what you get from the first. I went in with limited expectations bc of Amazons track history but so far I’ve been pleasantly surprised
Good to hear! I'm going to watch 2 this weekend.
I'd like to go in blind and possibly binge the series over the weekend, so I'll get back to the review after I watch ep1. Thank you again for your excellent videos and reviews!
Thanks for watching!
%100 agree. Looking forward to a new show for the first time in a long time. Hyped for this
I love Walton Goggins in everything he does. But yeah... I agree with your opinions of the series.
Thanks for the review. I didn’t play the games, but I’m familiar with them and I’m looking forward to watching an episode or two tonight!
Hope you enjoy!
I don't trust Amazon to not fuck this show up as well. I hope it's at least decent.
I hope they can stick the landing. At least its off to a good start whereas the other shows were trash right out of the gate.
"Put a chick in it, make her lame and gay."
@dgmt1 your just blinded by your hate of mega corporations. This show is amazing.
@@Hueghjean "Amazing" is quite the statement. Decent or pretty good is a better description, but that's just my opinion.
I know the meme. The lead in this is neither lame nor gay. In fact, her whole story arc in the beginning is looking for a man so she can "breed", which she does.
Dude, my love of post apocalyptic stuff started with wasteland too! Loved that game! Even named my dog back then Fargo after one of the designers.
Awesome!
I’m not a gamer at all, so i basically went into this blind. My only biases were from previous post apocalyptic films like the Mad Max series, The Road, Book of Eli, Omega Man, Blood of Heroes(recently discovered omg you HAVE to watch it, it’s got like half the cast from Road Warrior and Immortan Joe from Fury Road AND Rutger Hauer 1989). I, so far, am thoroughly enjoying it. I’m halfway through and I’m liking it more with each successive episode. Maybe if I were a gamer I’d have a different opinion, but as a stand alone show, I’m loving it. I’m also loving YOU, Cecil! You rock harder than ever!
I've been a Fallout fan since 1998 so I might be biased but I think this show is fantastic.
I only had time enough last night to watch the first episode, too. I was really happy with it overall, I was a little sad about not hearing Ron Perlman talk about how war never changes, but hey maybe that comes along later. I noticed (unless I'm crazy) that Walton Goggins' character pre-nukes is called "Mr. Howard" by one of the partygoers, and I thought that was cute.
They invoked the name of Howard and now Skyrim is getting another re-re-release. :)
Ella is great in Yellowjackets =)
Yellowjackets and that cast is amazing!
Enjoyed the first episode quite a bit. Like you said not perfect but pretty good. I feel like Walton Goggins is going to absolutely steal this show.
I have been so nervous about this show but after seeing your review I'm going to give it a shot now. As a fellow massive Wasteland fan, did you end up backing the last two Wasteland games on Kickstarter? I'm pretty bummed I somehow found out about both kickstarters AFTER they were done.
But I appreciate this review, because you touched on everything I was nervous about with this, so now I'm looking forward to it.
I was there for W2 the second it launched. I was super excited and they delivered a great game and more. Same with 3. Been overwhelmingly happy that after all these years we got proper sequels. My only regret is not having enough money for the perk in 2 to get my name in the game.
If you check out the show, I hope you enjoy it!
What are your thoughts on the Wastelander sequels?
2-3? I love them.
My love of post apocalyptic stuff began back in the 70's, when the first series of the original version of Survivors was on BBC1. In primetime. I doubt it would get to go out as early as it did nowadays. I was eight and a half [approx]. We only had three tv channels none of which were on all day. So you watched all TV you could. It was habit. But it captured my imagination. And the thought of life after the collapse of civilisation has always interested me as a setting since. I would walk home from school and daydream about being the last survivor in my neighbourhood. I would move into one particular house because it looked big. And I would find an abandoned lorry at a nearby busy road and there would be a cargo of androids in there. I would activate them all and...then I'd get home and other things took priority.
I'm not a gamer so had never actually heard of Fallout till this was announced. I will give it a go.
Hope you enjoy it!
Played Wasteland on my Apple 2e. Have played everything Fallout except the console game. Also own all the Wasteland sequels!!! Going into the show with no expectations!!! Thanks for the info Cecil!!!
You are welcome!
I sadly never played the games. However I think we agree that this is a very surprising good start.
I don't think you will be disappointed.
Thank you good sir
Yay!
It's awesome that you are reviewing the show episode by episode because I agree I'm not a fan of binge watching anymore not everyone has the time to binge watch a show , as someone that hasn't played any of the Fallout games I'm really enjoying this series so far and maybe I'll play the games now
I'm also old school and can't get to binge watch the shows, so I'm going to watch one episode per day (if possible) and hope to don't find any spoilers.
And also, Fallout OG squad here, really enjoying the show so far!
I think binging just gives you less appreciation for the material. Watching 1-2 eps and then taking some time to absorb/reflect on what happened before moving to the next. With binging, you just kind of blaze through the whole thing and then promptly forget most of it.
Ella Purnell's a pretty big star right now, being in multiple movies (like Army of the Dead) and other TV shows (like Yellowjackets). Yes, she does Alita-sized eyes.
Hi. One question. Any chance you might review films like 1995's Cruel Jaws and/or 2015's Shark Exorcist?
Cruel Jaws definitely
@@GoodBadFlicks - Thanks. Appreciate it.
Honestly I think they knocked it out of the park. I was engaged from the first episode to the last. I binge watched the entire thing last night and now I am dead dog tired lol. I don't think it could have been better. I was bothered by things in Brotherhood encampment. I think they could have been portrayed better, but not a deal breaker.
Can’t wait for you to review the whole series. I binged the whole thing in under 24 hours. It wasn’t perfect, but it was very entertaining and the world building was spot on.
I'm on ep 3 now and its still good.
This is the fastest I've ever seen you do a video. I haven't watched it yet (this video fully and the series since I forgot about it).
I didn't think you did a review that fast of a series that just started.
As long as you don't go into "explained" territory, than you still have a sub. I'll fully watch this video after I watch the series after work.
I don't like the "This thing EXPLAINED" either.
@@GoodBadFlicks and thats what makes your channel SO MUCH BETTER than others.
And as I just watched your video, I agree, IGN can go suck it!
And the only thing you helped me with the this video was that all episodes were available for streaming and binging now. Instead of weekly periodic episodes....Reacher (which I felt the season was too short and it moved too fast, but was overall okay).
All the blood and gore you mentioned was the "Critical Hit = Mass blood effect" Perk from the games. At least that's what I think of it when you mentioned it.
:)
After binging the show and without spoilers, it stays strong all the way thru - in my opinion.
Amazing take on the source material. Miles and miles above Rings of Power.
Possible Spoilers
If you thought there was a bit too much blood and gore then you have never taken the "Bloody Mess" perk!🤣
I did binge watch it and I also found a few things I didn't care for. For example, instead of jet packs, for some reason they decided that they would have jets in their arms. Another thing is that at times it seemed to drag, but over all I enjoyed it.
I think they did a pretty good job with the characters you would find in the game and much of the humor is a dark kind that comes from the situations our "heroes" find themselves in instead of just slapstick. My favorite joke was when the ghoul alluded to the fact that every time they try to do the main storyline, they get side tracked by side quests!😆
My biggest problem is that it is basically a love story to the fans of the games but others might not be able to enjoy it as much by missing a lot of the humor and lore.
I didn't have a problem with the amount of gore, just with how phoney it looked.
Nice :D I also played Wasteland back in the '80s :D Really glad to see you opened with that :)
I wanted to present where I was coming from as a long time lover of the genre. :)
Lucy's dad could have totally been played by Bruce Campbell.
He has a place in this series somewhere and I hope they cast him. It also has a Dukes of Hazard reference I wasn't expecting at all.
I binged the whole thing yesterday and they honestly managed to capture the feel of the games almost perfectly! Not as good an adaptation as The Last of Us, but very close. Btw... I also played Wasteland back in the day 😅
Haha, somehow I didn't notice her eyes until you mentioned it, but you're totally right 😆.
Nice review, seems like it might be pretty cool.
On the Amazon originals thing - remember that it's not always Amazon that starts/ comes up with something (maybe that's often the case?)
For example - Hazbin Hotel. Not sure if they present it as an "Amazon original," but they probably do. It started out completely independently as a pilot on YT (released 2019). It got really popular as far as indie animation. A24 picked it up, got the deal with Amazon, and Season 1 finally premiered earlier this year.
I get not everyone will like it, but imo, it's absolutely awesome!
The sort of sister show, Helluva Boss (its pilot also came out in 2019), is on YT, still independent, and is also great (imo). I've been more into them than any other shows than I have been in a *long* time.
Haven't even finished the video but 3:34 got me good. Literally told my wife last night she looked familiar and reminded me of Alita with those eyes
Glad I'm not the only one!
I've never played the games but if I were younger probably would have gotten into them. I love a good post apocalypse movie/show and pretty much anything Walton Goggins is in. Good to see him in more of a lead role. Anyway, I was upset because the trailer looked good to me but everyone was trashing it before it was even released. Glad to see a Fallout fan approves (at least of the the pilot)
I'm still nervous its going to go sideways at some point but we'll see.
@@GoodBadFlicks Hopefully they'll save that for the 2nd season when they try to send a message
@@GoodBadFlicksthe entire first season is great. They really knocked it out of the park with this show.
I haven't seen it yet but want to see if they explain pop caps to the vault dweller. It was always silly in the games that it automatically used without explaining it.
I made it to the boot scene and had to turn it off, ugh that gave me the mega willies and turned my stomach. Gonna give it a day or two before trying again.
That was rough but well done. Ouch.
Thanks for the review, Cecil. I'm glad to hear that the show seems to be doing the game justice. I've never played Fallout myself, but I certainly know how popular the franchise is. Hope that the show continues to impress.
Thanks for watching!
@@GoodBadFlicks Anytime.
My first thought when I saw Ella Purnell in this was she sounds and looks just like Mila Kunis both have big eyes and same exact voice as well similar characteristic's and body frame.
a bunch of buzz lightyears..

I binges the whole thing last night and I think they nailed it. Its really good.
"Way back in 1988." I was 13. Great review video.
Thanks!
Dude.. we're totally eye 👁️ to eye👁️ at 3:33 , hell I actually thought it was the same person
Glad I'm not the only one!
Ella Purnell is pretty good in Yellowjackets
I was impressed too. I expected nothing and came out surprised
I am watching the series and thought I would watch them 1 a day. Ended up watching 4 episodes last night and 2 this morning. I joke that the writing is more accurate than Fallout 76.
I'm 2 episodes in so far an loving it. So suprissed that they dropped the whole season at once let alone 2 days early.
I wonder if it leaked somewhere which was why they released it early.
You pretty much have the same feeling about the show that I do. Regarding the power armor, it totally looks like another substance, like foam rubber or something, was made to look like steel, but doesn’t. It just looks like really good cosplay. I’m engaged enough to definitely finish the season. It’s also fun trying to find all the Easter eggs and references.
It just didn't have the right "weight" to it. Its not a huge deal breaker and I'm not even quite sure what could be done to fix it, which is why I'm not super upset about it. At least they look like they are physically there!
@@GoodBadFlicks that’s true, they could have been CGI and looked bad. I’ve only watched to first two episodes, I’ll probably finish the whole season by Sunday. Even though there’s most likely going to be a season 2, I hope the questions being presented are answered by the end of this season. I’m tired of shows that just….don’t do that.
loved the pilot. not binging it either, but will do an episode a day. on a side not, fallout 76 was a train wreck at launch but lots of fun now. always something to do and events. consider a second chance
I gave 76 multiple chances after a few patches. Its not my cup of tea.
@@GoodBadFlicks I do appreciate the fact you gave it a few chances , oh did you ever review “ a boy and his dog?”
I did a pretty exhaustive video on it a few years ago. Great film.
@@GoodBadFlicks will look for it after work, thanks!
Never played the games, fantastic show.
Agreed it was surprisingly good. The trailer was TRASH, and had me very worried, but glad I tried it out. Looking forward to the rest. It's a perfect mix of darkness and comedy so far.
And yea, her eyes are massive.
The actress is from Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children movie. She was the girl who can float and was a human balloon. And yes, those are her real eyes.
And Yellowjackets. She's their first "meal"...
She is also the voice actor for Jinx in Arcane which I enjoyed.
I like the subliminal skull in the poster art. And the show too. I just felt the poster art was a nice touch.
I haven’t played the games, I know a bit about them and that’s it. Without knowing much, I really enjoyed this series! I thought how silly everything looks (places, story line, tech, how they keep meeting with each other… I believe it’s on par with the game and it’s fine in the game) but the characters are really well developed.
Prime isn’t that bad, The Boys (and spin offs), Invincible… there are some things I like in there.
So long as Dogmeat lives is all I care about. Best character and best Boi.
I think they know if something happens to Dogmeat, the audience will riot
I'm curious to watch it because of Jonathan Nolan. He is the showruner behind the series. Happy to hear you liked the pilot.
Not only that, he's directing...and it's been great three episodes in.
I was happy with the first episode. The suits do move like Buzz Lightyears, and the ghoul doesn't look rubbery at all. Maybe this was for the sake of video length and RUclips ad revenue but none of those nitpicks were really true.
I really have to admit against my initial judgement, I checked out Fallout, and I am glad I did. I do love the series and think it has plenty of fun easter eggs for longtime fans of the video games. That being said, I had a few issues with it. First of which is sticking with the Fallout 4 Weapon Design for the show. Almost every gun looked chunky and unwieldy. I can understand the BOS weapons being so, but every other weapon looking that way is a bit dumb to me. Additionally, the lack of Ghouls overall in the wasteland kinda drives me nuts since they are pretty heavily populated in their spread across the wasteland. I think I counted less than a dozen total. Course, the final gripe I have is one I also have with Game of Thrones, which I watched recently. That being the lack of clear passing of time. Game of thrones is supposed to take place over something like 5 years, but other than some younger characters aging or statements of time passing, it doesn't feel like it takes place more than over a couple weeks when watching the main cast. Same with Fallout. It is supposed to take place over weeks, but it just feels like a few days. A great way of showing the passage of time was the head, but they didn't do an excellent job of it. The head itself just seems to turn grey and bloat. But in a hot, dry environment like is shown, it would be mummified from the dry climate in a couple weeks or outright skull and a few veterbrae over the course of a month. It would have been really cool for Bethesda to show the head as being wrapped in a cloth to hide how it looks for most of the later episodes and then reveal it has turned into something resembling a mummy or shrunken head.
Still, those are just my opinions
It's good. I had been very skeptical of it. But having finished it an hour ago, I can't wait for season 2. *also she was in Army of The Dead. Liked her better in Fallout though.
You going to review the rest of the series? would love to see it
Absolutely yes God Hand. I think it's the only game where you can fight evil dwarf Power Rangers.
Do you have a list of post apocalypse movies?
I do but it would be too long to post here. I'd say go to the IMDB and look up Post Apoc films. There are a ton but most of the great ones are from the 80s.
Baby Billy as a Ghoul = A winner
I hear The video game was really enjoyable, even if I haven't played it or heard of it. The actress was a cast member of the television show Yellow Jackets, which I had previously seen. Curious to see what happens in Season 2.
