  • When the Confederacy was established, the rebellious states named Stephen Russell Mallory as secretary of the Navy. Mallory immediately started an ironclad construction program to build five ironclads: four on the Mississippi River and one in Hampton Roads, Virginia. After March 9, 1862, Southerners (and the Union) recognized the need for more ironclads. Somehow, the South had to quickly find the resources to build more ironclads to defend their harbors.

    He missed the question on the union fixing the Atlanta after capture it wasn't about the port shutters as much as being too small to train the guns in wide enough arcs so an opponent could not sit in a safe spot as the Weehawken did?
