The fact Jim was mentioned on ABC World News shows how much of an impact this man left on not just "Action News", but the entity of News Anchorage.
I wish you nothing but the best, Jim. I hope you have a lovely retirement. And thank you for the 46 years of keeping us up with the local news.

I'm 45 and now live in Denver CO. I moved out of the area in 2006. I grew up in Easton , PA with JG and Action News. My parents would put on action news when we were finishing up dinner to check the weather. We would later watch Peter Jennings and Jeopardy. It was a family tradition. This man is an absolute legend! I remember when the channel 6 news helicopter flew over our house one summer when I was swimming in my friends pool. We were so excited as little kids. Action News is the best news show in the country for local news. Jim Gardner is the Harry Kalas of local news. I'll miss him. Thank you Jim for everything that you have done!

I'm not from the US, but I really like the way they handle the situation of iconic anchors there. They are allowed a closing. Here in Brazil it's not common, they generally leave the desk they worked for many years without a proper goodbye, even the national ones. Either by unceremonnial firing or replacement. My city has such a case.
If Jim and Harry are on the same page, he is truly great. Really like Harry, after I became a fan of the NFL I watched some of his descriptions on NFL Films productions, learned a lot about the history of the games and it's marquee figures and championship histories. Found his baseball career way too late, after he died and before I became aware of how much he touched the fanbase of the Phillies

I was born in 1963 and grew up in NE Philly. My mom passed in 2005. She seldom watched the 6 pm news. However, her routine at 11 pm was to watch Action News and Jim Gardner. I automatically knew I’d have to change the channel to 6 at 11 even if a Phillies game hadn’t ended yet on another channel. It was like dealing with Rain Man, lol. You didn’t mess with Mom watching Action News at 11. I moved to Florida this year but I searched for this clip. Best wishes, Jim.

With My brother and his family living in the nearby South Jersey suburbs for over 15 years now, congrats Jim on your retirement. As a NYC native, I would a few times a year when visiting the area, get the honor of watching an old school and gifted News Anchor. No BS, told the news 'straight' and most important not partisan. Plus unlike say the great NYC Anchors of the past 50 years mainly such as Bill Beutel, Chuck Scarborough, Sue Simmons and Ernie Arnstos, Mr Gardner was a smart and yet really nice guy that was never ever a "Diva."
Young Adults taking broadcast media and or journalism classes, please take notes. Jim is the perfect example of being a News Anchor. Everyone in the Philadelphia region, you been blessed to have for the past 50 years both Larry Kane and then Jim Gardner as the Chief News Anchors at Channel 6. Good luck in retirement Sir.

@@americangiant1003 I grew up watching all of them because I'm in central NJ, exactly half way between NYC and philly. So my cable carried both stations for each network. I usually preferred the New York ones, though, unless there was something more local happening in my area that only channel 6 would cover. One time one of the long time reporters from channel 6 actually came to a friend's house, while I was there watching his kid, to interview him because he got struck by lightning. The people from channel 6 seemed really nice like family. They wouldn't have stayed on the air so long if they hadn't. It's a rarity because I actually went to college for TV and I've seen first hand the kind of people the industry tends to attract, even at that level.

GROWING UP watching Jim. He is right. Trust. We trust him and trust Action News. I cried. I am really going to miss this guy. I love how humble he is. When many of his colleagues retired, they had their family and friends, and sometimes a cake, in the final segment of the broadcast. Jim said No. He said, lets do the news like we always do the news and have the after party when it is over. You could tell, even during the final broadcast, he did not want to make it all about him. He just wanted to do the news and have a regular news broadcast. As regular as it could be, anyway, with everyone watching, knowing it was his last. Also, a shout out to Radnor Police. Nice touch with the police escort. Really, nice touch. There would have been a mini-parade on the Main Line down Lancaster Ave with people lining the streets if Jim was not so humble. Jim, thank you for earning the trust of my family and friends and the entire Delaware Valley. Goodbye, old friend.

Jim Gardner was one of the family.
To many of us, he was a brother, father, and friend. He delivered us our news with a mix of professionalism, integrity, dedication and compassion. Regardless of the story, we could trust him and we knew he cared about "us", his viewers. We could count on him as he was always there for us all these years.
Not once did he take that responsibility lightly, and we always appreciated that about him.

I didn’t watch all of his broadcasts though in the 80’s, 90’s, but started recording them on computer onto external hard drives around 2010-2011. I must have spent over several thousand on hard drives, they are between $80-130 each for 4-5 tb. I started getting the smaller ones around 2016 and store them in plastic storage boxes from Staples. There are some 80’s and 90’s and 2000’s clips and broadcasts on RUclips of Jim. I use Windows Media Center with six tuners as well as WinTV and TotalMedia. I record other shows and news.

He was at WPVI 6 since the bicentennial. Since I was 2. Now he has earned his retirement. But it won’t be the same without his voice on TV every weekday evening. There are some clips and full broadcasts of him in the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s and News Archive has full broadcasts broken up into segments since 2009. I recorded full broadcasts of several news stations on my computer since 2010-2011 but missed a few due to the recording failing or the computer shutting down. I have them stored on external hard drives, 2010 to 2016 or so large external drives and then the smaller ones that don’t require an electrical plug. They take up less room. I record news and other shows because some shows and news can’t be watched after they aired online but Action News has full broadcasts on their site mixed in with video clips when you go to the watch Action News livestream section and scroll down.

I'm not form Philadelphia. I really admire one of your native sons, the late and still much missed Kobe Bryant. I would like to expose a situation that pisses me beyond off:
I'm from Goiania, all the way down in Brazil, and here we had a newsanchor of similar status that did not have his deserved farewell from our 7 p.m. news. For real, Jackson Abrão (his name) deserves a final broadcast in the same manner Jim Gardner had. It pisses me off. He already survived a brain tumor after he stopped broadcasting.
He is still active in the media group that owns the station, doing internet content. I really hope they give him a finale, because he went out in 2012 without saying goodbye.
