eBay Finds: $25 Dell Latitude 2120 Unboxing, Teardown, Overview, and Test

  • For the past few weeks I have been searching around for a small but usable laptop / netbook to replace my Dell Inspiron 15. The Inspiron 15 is a good little laptop but I desired something smaller, lighter, and more rugged. My budget for a used laptop was $50 and my budget for a new machine was $250. I preferred a used laptop to keep costs down. After searching eBay and craigslist for about a couple weeks I came across this Dell Latitude 2120, it was within my price range and the specs looked good so I pulled the trigger.
First impressions during the unboxing were excellent. To my surprise the laptop was in near perfect condition, there were only two minor scuffs that caught my eye. The length and with of the system was exactly what I was looking for bu the extended battery makes the laptop about .5" to thick for my tastes.
After tearing the system apart and installing a 16GB Kingspec SSD I demoed the system's performance which was actually pretty decent. Boot time was only around 40 seconds, system applications were very responsive, office programs opened quickly, my IDE worked great, and with only one or two tabs open internet browsing was pleasant. The system did start to come to a slow with multiple tabs opened and would not play 720p video back smoothly.
Considering that this system only has a single core Atom 455 inside I am for the most part satisfied with the overall performance, it was actually a little bit above my expectations. I am not 100% sure yet if I am going to keep this laptop or not. I am going to play around with it for a week or two more. I will keep you guys updated!
    System Specs: Intel Aton N455 @ 1.66GHz, 2GB DDR3 SD RAM, 16GB KingSpec SSD, Intel GMA 3150, 1204 X 600 Display, Xubuntu 15.10

Don't put a SIM card into the internal slot. I did once, and someone from a three-letter agency called saying he wanted the netbook back.

Yep, that other slot there is for a WWAN card that the SIM would be attached to to let the laptop online.

I do not know if you still have the 2120 anymore but you could order it with a handle. The handle attached to it by the Kensington lock, that is why it had a lock on both sides. You can push the keyboard out through the screw hole on the back so you don't have to use screwdrivers to pry it up.

That laptop looks like an educational laptop that schools would buy. The wifi light was so teachers could tell when a kid was browsing the net or so I heard. I would personally (and probably will at some point) buy a lenovo thinkpad x230 they are pretty cheap now with 3rd gen core i5 processors and 4 or 8gb ram. for 25$ that's a pretty decent deal

If you're looking for a small netbook/laptop than this Latitude 2120, I'd either get the Latitude 2120 that has the Atom N550 (2 cores, 4 threads) processor, which is noticeably faster than the N455 (1 core, 2 threads), or for a lot more performance, you could try to pick up a Lenovo x130e laptop with a Core i3 CPU in it.

ZUBUNTU is based on UBUNTU but the people who develop UBUNTU are starting to use the FreeBSD core which will make for a nice stable OS but I think that some of the UBUNTU software might make the OS slightly unstable so I think that they use the software manager called PORTS so that it will be more stable.

What a beautiful computer, I totally love the size and design. Much better than the Dell Mini netbooks. Only issue is that Intel atom processor, atoms are my least favorite processor, they just have zero grunt and get overloaded very easily. My old Dell mini 9 actually had no fan or heat sink, just a bare processor.

I had one of these years ago, it was good back in the day, the biggest mistake I made was upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 10. The laptop was good on windows 8 because of the touchscreen and the rapid 20 second boot times. PS Windows 10 took around 20 minutes to boot on 1GB RAM.

Many latitude series comes with sim slots for 3G and 4G wireless. The single core Atom cpu based netbooks just kinda stink for multitasking. The good news is linux will run much better than Windows 7 starter anyday. Even the dual core Atoms struggle so, your really not missing much. But having ddr3 is a bonus for the bandwidth restricted cpu. One of the better netbooks of it's day.

That's pretty neat. You are always surprised by a weaker machines ability. Recommendation though. Try maxing out its ram and see if you can allocate more to the v-ram. It WILL NOT make gaming even close to possible. Unless you're talking like real old games. But it will definitely help with 1. tabs in chromium and 2. youtube playback and 3. "graphically intensive" website.

great video as always!, as u said if it isn't to speedy for ur needs I would recommend seeing if u can replace the CPU and maybe add 1 stick of 2gb ram if u can. I'm not sure if that atom is soldered on the mobo though. I'm very surprised it's that response my first laptop had a AMD sempron si-42 2gb ram and a AMD HD GPU it cant even load windows 7 uless u end up pulling your hair out for waiting ages for it to work. also in the bios i saw a video setting so u could possibly get more vram as it said u had 8mb :/. keep up the great video's dude!

+AA Computers and Technology ahhh :(, some of the dells do support an option for increased Vram. that's a bummer 8mb isn't a hole lot for using the web as its more resource hungry :/ u could try and find a modded driver for it that's what I did for my Hd1000 was at 64m now at 128 it also made the MHz higher as Max was 766 then when to 800 due to the modded driver. it will help a lot if u are able to find one. IL try look for one if you are interested?

That's okay. It would probably be nearly impossible to track down a driver that would work with Linux. Thanks for offering though.

Well, you gotta admit for a potato for a cpu and gpu it does pretty darn well. but of course that is this laptop's biggest flaw. Even the modern Atoms aka Pentium silver are not that great for performance. That of course was never the intent anyway. Cheap, well for the cpu, this netbook wasn't cheap. But most at the time were. Cheap to make, cheap to buy.

we use those shitty latitude 2120 laptops for school and the tech guys decided it would be a great idea to install windows 10 on them! windows 10 cant be ran that well on these piles. i had my laptop re imaged back to windows 7 and then later crashed. dont buy these they are horrible.
