    What do you think happened to Kass?

  • @maqaroon
    @maqaroon Год назад +614

    My personal theory not based on Zelda lore is that Kass is clearly a blue & gold macaw parrot and he can only survive in a warm or tropical habitat. The Rito, including his wife, look more like "generic" birds that you see in all climates. Kass's children are effectively mixed-race from a bird perspective, but they won't have problems with the environment due to their mother being a local Rito. But as a parrot, Kass had to leave when Rito village got covered with snow. His family are probably not worried as it's a planned trip and he would return once the village went back to normal. It's also interesting that he was replaced by Penn who's a pelican and more adapted to temperate climates. Penn's mannerisms and his vintage flying helmet and goggles make him appear quite american, so my bets are on him being an American White Pelican.

    • @javiervasquez625
      @javiervasquez625 Год назад +112

      Basically both Kass and Penn are _migratory birds_ who need to move to other environments as per the changing of the Seasons. Makes sense and it would explain his family having a reason not to talk about him.

      Hey, yeah! Kass is a migratory bird, so it stands to reason that he has consistently taken an extended trip every year around this time of year, and it's just a coincidence that the upheaval (and therefor, this game) took place during his absence. His wife and children aren't concerned because he has always traveled during this season.

    Another theory: Kass is always somewhere else on the map. Link just keeps missing him. Hence why none of the NPCs mention anything significant happening to Kass, as he is just traveling Hyrule like he always does.

      The fact that they don't mention him kind of implies 1 of 2 things:
      A) He died somehow in between the 6 years seperating BotW and TotK which would be weird since you would expect _something_ in Rito Village to allude to Kass's death like a memorial, grave or even his accordion lying around somewhere.
      B) He's on a "musical journey" beyond Hyrule by the time of the Upheavel which is why they don't mention him been fully aware that their father is away in a long trip giving them no reason to mention him since they know he's not going to come back for a long time.
      Personally i lean on option B) given the evidence is far more plausible without arguing for the Rito to be extremely emotionless to pay no respect to that one famous accordion Rito player who died only a few years ago.

    • @Link_1129
      @Link_1129 Год назад +11

      @@javiervasquez625I also lean on Option B, for one simple reason: Link has apparently been away from Rito Village since the end of BotW, Tulin and his family pretty much say just that when you first arrive in TotK. When you met up with Kass' family, like the video says...they say nothing. Except for the one statement from Genli. Surely, they would've managed to mention something to Link if anything did happen since it's been years. He's alive out there.

But on his last show, his set got cut short and he flew into a glorious rant about how he had "ONE clucking minute" left because the organizers decided that "that green son of a Horriblin, Tingle" deserved more time on stage. He also declared that he is, in fact, not "the clucking Stable Trotters" after which he smashed his accordion in glorious fashion before marching off the stage while giving the audience the bird. That was the point when he decided that he smoked too much and needed rehab. But as you mentioned, the Rito decided not to talk about it.

    There are simularities between Kass' and Tauro's character designs, especially in the colors and the feathers. It's very "Lurelin". Both are curious, adventerous, devoted to traveling around and learning. Different species, yet birds of a feather. If they'd cross paths they'd be fast friends. So Tauro being the only hylian to brings Kass up feels like a story the Zelda team had but didn't dive into, maybe Lurelin had potiential to be a ocean port that could connect hyrule with the rest of the world. Kass had already perserved the history on this continent, so going to another as an ambassador and musical scholar to both learn new histories and share Hyrule's makes a lot of sense. This hyrule doesnt have the ships yet, it's still rebuilding, but it wants to grow, so Kass flies out ahead of everyone. Maybe this is how and why Sidon's new wife decided to come to Hyrule/our Zora's domain and see it for herself.

    There's one weird thing that I've been thinking about in the game. On the top of the pillar/mountain Rito Village is on, while the blizzard is going, there is a person sized hole in the snow which made me think someone was buried there recently, and it's been put somewhere you can't ascend through it. This of course disappears after beating the Wind Temple since the snow is gone.

  • @LunaP1

    The theory that Kass is traveling is pretty plausible. He most likely left months before the Gloom and Upheaval happened and wasn't aware that his family would be in danger, otherwise he would've stayed in Hyrule to either help with the restoration efforts or probably another Gloom victim held up in Rito Village (or the long since shut down stable to stay out of the cold while recovering).

  • @KittMouri
    @KittMouri Год назад +26

    My theory: Kass would have died if he stayed at Rito Village!
    Kass, Teba, Penn, and the former Rito Elder (whose name escapes me) are the only Rito baser off of distinct birds. Teba is some sort of eagle, Penn is a pelican, the former Rito Elder is an owl, and Kass is a blue macaw. Out of these birds, Kass is the only one that exists in one type of climate in the world and that's a topical region. When the Storm Arc occurrence happened, Teba knew that Kass would have died if he stayed in the blizzard, so he tasked Kass with going to another Rito village to find help.
    I don't think he would have abandoned his family during a dangerous phenomenon like this unless he absolutely had to. He would have wanted to protect his family. That's actually why he was searching for music in the first game; to aid the hero. He didn't want to be away from his loved ones, but he knew the only way to help them was to help Link, the Hero of Hyrule.
    Music is important to him, but not more than his wife and children. Just like in Breath of the Wild, I think he is on a mission to save his family in the only way that he can, and that's by leaving the village and seeking help. At least, that's my theory. I was REALLY hoping that we would have gotten some DLC that would have confirmed his whereabouts and am genuinely sad that we are not getting any. The game left so many unanswered questions that DLC would have been well received. Oh well. ☹

      @@Mari_Izu Well, it's true that they are humanoid, but they do have related traits to their respective creatures. Like, for example, the Zora are weak to electricity as fish would be. They make clothes for themselves, of course, but looking at the clothes they wear, they aren't designed for warning. Some of them don't even wear pants. But, I do get where you're coming from, too. This isn't an in-universe theory, but I think I may understand why Nintendo just excluded him from the game. Tears of the Kingdom treats the events of Breath of the Wild like a prologue that the player was not involved in. The only elements of the game that are referred to canonically are those involved with the main quest. Any “adventuring” in between cannot be counted on, so Link basically didn’t do any of those things. The only people who know Link in TotK are those involved in the main quest of BotW. (The Sheikah member & the Sages/those who helped Link free the Divine Beasts). If a character is someone you met through your adventuring, they do not know you in TotK (Beedle, Bolson, the shopkeepers in the villages). This is apparent with Hudson. He knows you because the game decided you met during the Hyrule Restoration Project, but no one else in the town recognizes you. Because it’s not canon that Link helped building the town.
    Kass is a tricky character. He’s a fairly prominent figure in the gameplay of BotW., but he technically isn’t integral to the plot. Interacting and completing his quests does give you a lot of information regarding the lore and backstory, but you mostly interact with him through your adventuring - something specific to anyone’s own personal experience with the game. This is why it’s tough to bring him back. He isn’t involved with the main plot, but he’s more important than Beedle or Bolson. By the game’s logic, the type of role he played in BotW meant he wouldn’t know who you are anymore, BUT it would also be incredibly strange to just pretend that he doesn’t when basically all he did in BotW was interact with and help Link. This is why the only reference to him is by someone completely unrelated to him; a fleeting comment that Link cannot follow up on. His own wife and children don’t even talk about him. He had a unique role and Nintendo just didn't know what to do with him.
    I do like your lore theories though ^^

    Personally, I think Kass just left Hyrule on a journey to come up with musical melodies of his own. In BotW, all of his songs came from ancient legends or his late teacher. After teaching Link about his teacher's music and all of the ancient songs related to in-game shrines, Kass left Hyrule to pursue his own musical aspirations. He's the only one we see who looks like a parrot, just as Penn is the only one we see that looks like a pelican. All the Rito we see in Hyrule look like birds of prey, albeit more colorful than raptors typically are. Kaneli is obviously an owl and Teba and his son Tulin look like they could be either gyrfalcons or snowy owls. Most of the other Rito look like some sort of hawk or falcon, aside from being more brightly colored in some cases.

Unlike most Rito that look like hawks, Kass is a parrot and Penn is a pelican while the Rito elder is a type of owl. Kass' children have very colorful feathers that could be dued to their father's tropical orgin. They however have their mother's body type from beak shape to slimmer built. Kass might not be able to handle such cold climates unlike his family so he might hale from a tropical Rito tribe outside of Hyrule.

  • @farfetchdthegamer3810

    As many people in the comments have reiterated, Kass is a macaw Rito. Hence, he wouldn’t be comfortable in the freezing Rito Village in ToTK, unlike Teba/Tulin (who seem to be gyrfalcon Rito), Kaneli (tawny owl Rito) or any of the others (who seem to be based on various raptors), so he had to leave. This would also explain why Penn (pelican Rito) doesn’t stay in the village- it would be too cold.
    However, my personal head canon is that he’s trapped in the Sky Islands somewhere. If we ever got a DLC, it would be great to get him back along with more islands.

It's a matter of costs, development time and new hardware which forces Nintendo to move on into a new Hyrule altogether rather than expanding the established world of the Era of the Wild through a measly tiny DLC.
      I agree that there's plenty of evidence for civilizations outside Hyrule to exist so you won't get any contradictions on my part on that regard but i repeat: creating a DLC instead of brand new game is far more _expensive_ than through a full fledged sequel with it's own fleshed out and breathing world.
