I've watched this video probably a hundred times. I've been dreaming to go to York since last year before I even applied. Can't believe I'm just mere weeks away from setting foot in campus. I haven't been able to visit.
I miss York so much. Happy to virtually take a stroll around, I went to york for a semester as an exchange student 3 years ago! I’m usually in campus west. Hope to be back, just to walk around and visit my friends soon!
it has changed so much since I was a student there, as a postgrad. I had such a wonderful time, great memories. Two of my neighbours in London, went to the University of York as well, so, we became good friends.
I really miss Uni of York, i have finished my master degree in 2018 Jan. and i was the member of Halifax....thanks for your video, i m already work for about 3 years in china, i have to say i still love this city and miss my second mother university(first was Northumbria).
I remember Ron Cooke well when he was the Provost of my college, Derwent. He used to invite all the new Derwent students round to his house for dinner, a corridor at a time. That was thirty years ago - ouch! No Campus East then; Langwith and Goodricke were 1960s Buildings on the first campus, like Derwent still is now. Harry Enfield had lived on my corridor years earlier. According to the cleaners he used to put geese in his room!
Thank you so much for this video. I’ve been watching your videos a lot recently to get an idea of what studying at York Uni would be like since I’m currently in Y12 💛
Thank you so much for this, this was really helpful since I haven't been able to visit yorks campus before starting, kinda sad you didn't go to Halifax but this was the most detailed tour ive seen. Love your vids x
Good grief!! The place is huge, with subject departments that didn't exist in my time. I haven't visited the University for years. I graduated in physics in 1969!!! My first year was in the 'old' Langwith (facing the chemistry department on the opposite side of the road and adjacent to the 'old' Derwent), with labwork in one wing of the Chemistry department (they were finishing construction of the physics labs near the lake). In my second year I had digs in a widowed lady's bungalow to the rear of the parish church. My final year was in the 'old' Alcuin, there seems to have been huge alterations to this college. I did postgraduate education at Leeds, but lived for a while in a fleapit near to Heslington Road chippy. Now I'm ancient, I need to revisit, especially the King Charles XII pub. One really good memory I have is that, because there were only a few hundred undergraduates in the early days, there was a common room in Heslington hall, with French windows onto the rear gardens, easy chairs and easy access - very pleasant indeed. I suspect no-one is allowed in there now with there being thousands of undergraduates.
So glad to hear this! I'm moving into Alcuin next semester and have been super nervous about not making friends as all of my classes are online and Alcuin is known for being boring 😅
@@alexsmith1800 Classes haven’t started yet and only two of my flatmates are back so it’s hard to say. The ones that are back are super nice thought xx
I put Alcuin as my top choice and I’m glad to hear that- is it true that it’s only rly medicine/science students there? I’m doing history and I’m worried I won’t make similar minded friends
Amazing university and great city. I did not take my place at Oxford and went to York instead. Got me a great career in investment banking in London and Chicago
No pressure but it would be great if you guys could answer these questions for me. I’m planning to pursue MSc HRM from York. I’ve also received offer from Exeter for the same. Which one is better in terms of job opportunities? Does York have good campus placements?
Ahhh, this is great for a bit of nostalgia! Thanks! Even a nice little bit of James College... think you might have been sat right in front of my old kitchen.
Hi! I know this video is quite old now, but I really want to study law at York! Would you mind telling me what a levels you did and the grades you got, as well as an insight into the difficulty of the application process? It would be so helpful and I would really appreciate it. This video was so good! x
Hey, I did a BTEC in Creative Media and got D*DD. The application process is all based on your personal statement and grades. When I was at York, they essentially interviewed anyone that was likely to meet the grade entry requirement. I didn't prep for the interview and got in. It's more on how you think and problem solve than anything else. Best of luck!
I’m wanting to study adult nursing at York next September. - Do you know how many people study nursing as most of the videos I’ve seen, people are studying law? - is the university difficult to navigate?
Im a first year adult nurse going into second year, there is about 150 people in our cohort, 90ish are adult nursing. its an amazing department and amazing campus, so easy to find your way round
@@carla5826 a lot of nurses go for alcuin as the department is based in alcuin collage but everyones pretty spread out. Im in vanbrugh which i love but i think im the only nurse in vanbrugh because its only a 38 week let. Have a look at each collage and see which one you like really, theyre all close by
I’m going to study York this September :) there’s about 150 of us studying this year coming. I’ve applied for constantine college so my study and home life are separate
Im super indecisive over which campus to go for. East looks more aesthetically pleasing but I'm somewhat concerned about being far away and excluded from social opportunities on West. Any thoughts? How would you weigh up the pros and cons?
I’d say if you’re lazy and don’t want to move from campuses every day, stay where your department is. If you don’t mind getting the bus for class every day, east have nicer accommodations and everything is newer/nicer, but also quieter (there’s only one student bar) I don’t think you’ll be excluded from any social opportunities, you’ll just have to go to west as most societies works there, so if you don’t mind getting the free bus which is usually about a 10 min ride (including waiting) Hope that helps!
This is so great!! did you feel out of the loop at all living/studying on East? That's my plan for this September! Also, how was living in halls for second year? Better or worse than moving off campus? Tempted to stay in halls (partly because I did half a degree before and liked halls way more) so I'd love to know what you think
Not at all, East was always pretty busy and Constantine has 600 people in it alone! Halls was definitely preferable to living off campus. It was easier, less faff, you're guaranteed to get things fixed quickly etc. Only downside with halls is living with 12 people/sharing with 12 people. But the mess is just as bad in a student house, except with halls at least you get cleaners. I'm glad I had the experience of living off for third year but i did prefer halls!
I will be coming to York as visiting student in January 2021. I have applied for accommodation at Halifax. In case, I couldn’t get an offer could you send me some links to find accommodation close to the campus?
Anyome know what its like studying chemistry at York? Its the main uni course im considering so id love to know literally anything about the chemistry department or what lectures are like. Thankyouuu
Erin Flood intense! Especially 2nd term of 2nd year (it’s pretty infamous for being a bit of a crazy term) But there is so much support and the staff are really good. I have found it difficult, but I think you’ll struggle to find anyone who hasn’t but it’s a really good place to study chem. if you have any specific qs let me know
@Genesis Burch thank u so much for this! i tend to always look on the financial side of things and just brush off even attempting going certain places so this means a lot
Im about to go into my second year at York for law, I got in with AAB - despite the requirements being AAA. They definitely look at your personal statement and any work experience. You also have an interview for some courses! Don't let the high requirements put you off! They're not always as rigid as you think!
