Tom C makes a good point. About 20 years ago in the studio a vocal teacher rented the studio that I worked in for a couple of hours. She brought in all 27 of her students so they could get an idea of what it was like to sing in a studio. I put up 9 microphones for them to sing into - so we heard 27 singers sing on each of the 9 mics. It was striking how some mics really suited some singers, and sounded bad on other singers. The two mics that sounded good on much everyone were the C12 and U67. There were maybe only 4 singers that didn't sound so good on either of those two mics. On the flip side there were mics that sounded great on 1 or 2 singers and just not attractive on anyone else. It was pretty interesting. I don't have any recordings or any notes from that session other than just my memory. Also, it wasn't super controlled for level matching like this test is. All of this to say, it would've been worthwhile to have more than one female and one male singer, however, I know that it was extremely time consuming for Sweetwater to run the test as they did. So... thank you Sweetwater for doing this! I'm going to listen tomorrow.

This is cool, but microphones record other instruments other than vocals. Like... everything else. In the future I'd love to see comparisons with other instruments other than vocals, etc. Keep making great content!

Fantastic information. A huge effort for us to learn and have a reference to make purchase decisions with confidence, and how to get consistent comparisons on our own in the studio. Thanks so much for all you do for us all.

Sweetwater sells stuff. What I love about Sweetwater is that they want to sell you the right stuff for you as best they can. As such Sweetwater offers a service. I think Chuck knew very early on that good business equals more business. A simple concept but one that they business world offers a lot of temptation to stray away from. Chuck kept the faith and we all won, and we get videos like this series.

Thank you to Sweetwater for all the work and thought going into this comparison. Sharing the hi-res files make this the best and most useful shootout I have ever seen. I downloaded the files to my DAW for comparison and it is incredibly useful in comparing. This is especially true in the full range of sound the mic is picking up... listening on good monitors was revealing. Sweetwater had suggested a mic to me, and I was able to listen to it here compared with mics I know or have so I got as close to a test drive as you can have before the mic is in your room. I'll be purchasing that mic for testing, too! Very good work on a very difficult project, and this is so greatly enhanced by the video and text explanations.

Love the (I paraphrased) comments "this is like providing a new color palette to an artist" and "no such Holy Grail of Microphone that is best for all situations and singers". Thank you for what you did!

The results are very impressive. The project is very impressive and so is Sweetwater! I think that it's good to download the files and listen in the DAW, but it's really very useful to hear these mics compressed with the audio the way that they are posted on the website because in the end, that is closer to how it will sound to everyone who listens to the music that we send out into the world. No one else gets to hear the 96k version. Half the world seems to listen on a phone speaker now! We came so far from transistor radios and went back! My focus on in each mic performance was sibilance and harshness. On Nick's vocal, it's when he pushed into the words "love that" where some mics sounded a bit too harsh to me and others were silky. I was surprised that I was most impressed not only with the U87, but also the Behringer C-1, the sE X1 S, the Avantone CV 12 and the Aston mics. I liked the Shure KSM44A also. The NT1 was good too. Big price differences in that group, but they sounded great to my ears, although they each had their own character. The Aston mics are very clear. I will put them on my future purchase list. (Your results may vary).

Great idea for a fair comparison of 50 microphones however not every singer sounds the same. One singer might sound great on mic A and not so good on mic B while another singer might sound great on mic B and not on mic A. It really comes down to what mic is the right mic for the singer.

I'm not sure you are right. ATK recorded vocals and played them through amp which was faced each microphone. This approach isn't objective as the mic used for the first recording+the amp, already made it subjective.
I think SweetWater's decision to make each singer sing in front each mic, is much more objective.

what about how the mics handled proximity effect individually, that sounds like a lot of variables.

I wondered if the performers were listening on earbuds or headphones during their performances? This makes a huge difference as to how they perform because they will certainly alter, somtimes subtly sometimes not so subtly, the tone and other aspects of their performance like fricatives, sibilants, etc., depending on what they hear back in real-time from the particular microphone. For instance singers love ribbon mics often because it really brings out their expression. They just don’t want to stop singing when they’re on headphones. But in the case of a mic shoot out if they are hearing themselves back they do not have an objective way of performing.
