- While scuba diving in Socorro, we swam right into a Vortex, not realizing what it was, 3 divers were caught in it's current forces, 1 for several minutes. All made it out and we all learned what a Vortex looks like.

Hi Michael,
Many thanks for sharing this video for the divers community !
It is a unique document that might help some in the furure, caught in similar conditions.
I can imagine the surprise and panic at that time !
I would like to hear and understand a little bit more on how you could rescue the ones captured, what you would recommend to escape in a similar case, what to do and not to do ?
Thanks in advance !
Nicolas Crismer.
This is not what I imagined vortexes to be... I imagined something more akin to a whirlpool. From the outside it looks like it'd be easy to swim out of, but that water must be running faster than it seems.
Yeah, it doesn't even seem that big but seems to difficult to get out of. At least, it doesn't seem to be pulling you down or that could've been fatal.
Anyone ever find out why that one diver was waiving a knife or something around the whole time? Was he trying to stab the vortex and assert dominance?
Note to self, avoid diving with any of these dudes ever!
+newjack1 If you can look at that video and come up with that remark, 1- your an ass., 2- You shouldn't dive at all, cause your clueless and don't have the ability to learn from others mistakes. Good luck loser.
+Michael H. wrr
+newjack1 I'm not a diver. What did they do wrong? How could they have helped him?
+Michael H. You do seem angry, are you one of these divers? 1 - Some people think I'm an ass, I'm ok with that. 2 - I definitely learned from this video. I learned I didn't want to dive with these dudes. The vortex is clearly visible in the water - to swim into it is just stupid. It shows a lack of experience and training. Similarly, flailing around in it with no real strategy for escape also shows a lack of training and experience. Diving is an amazing sport that has real and inherent risks. Acting like this is foolish.
+MrQwerty2524 1 Don't swim into a clearly visible vortex. 2 - Where's his buddy/DM? 3 - Learn some basic dive physics (buoyancy etc) 4 -Learn some basic self rescue and buddy rescue skills.
Shouldn't you just try to swim sideways instead of lengthwise?
My first thought was they came here for this reason to practice or play in it. But after awhile that guy kept making noises and looked to be very distressed. I am wondering how often he has used flippers because he was trying breast stroke instead of giving a good scissor kick. Then I started getting very concerned because of the amount he was breathing. He is obviously panicking. I grew up on the Mississippi, you can not fight the current. We are very concerned about safety. We do not let any guests on our boat without a life jacket because swimming in a pool is very different than swimming in the river. I am not sure why such a poor swimmer was allowed to go scuba diving to be honest. (we do not let someone who is even scared swim in the river because they might panic, we don't mess around with safety.)
A Vortex has only been (supposidly) seen a few times ever. I have not been able to find video of any other. It's not like people GO to it to practice.
+Michael H. I know there are whirlpools that appear at certain times in certain places so I thought the same might be true of vortexes.
+Whatever exactly, just not as often. the dive master on the boat said he had seen one twenty years ago and have talked to people who said the "knew" of them, but there's not much information on them.
I've been diving for years, and I had never seen anything like this before your video. I don't even think i've heard of it. Glad everyone came out of it ok, a learning experience for sure.
It happens when warm and cold current collide. Kinda like how tornadoes form from warm and cold air. I've seen a video where a guy was stuck in a really strong one and was spinning in circles really fast. I don't think he got out of it cause the video just ended with him spinning
Everytime he kicks, he looks like he is going to get away. Then he goes back to thrashing around. Does he have a knife in one hand?
Wow. That is terrifying. Crazy that you can actually see it.

Thanks for sharing this..
This might be a stupid question - but I'm genuinely asking about a potential course of action in this situation. I've seen strong currents in Cozumel while I lived there. But never seen a vortex or anything like in this video.
Would it make sense for another diver to jump in where the diver is stuck, and they could both push each other off, and hence out and away from the vortex?
I get inflating your BC would ease getting out of it, but they'd need to be prepared to purge right away to avoid ballooning right up, and then risk falling right back into it if they don't swim back toward the wall immediately - seems like many steps to think of in an emergency situation where the basics should be observed, and least amount of steps - no?
Have no clue dude.. not a diver
No, both will be sucked into the current (it´s got insame force, like a tornado). The only way is your second option (to add air to the BC and dump once out of it), but it´s still very risky and difficult.
If this wasn't staged... then where was his buddy. There were a few people around the diver that could have helped. As many have posted the easiest way to get out of that was to add air to the bc and dump once out of it. Maybe it was a new diver that was panicked, and was left to struggle way too long without assistance.
+Nino Martinez guy was also barely kicking his feet and using his hands which is useless but yes inexperienced.
You have been blessed by DROSS say tanks.
I think all he needed to do was slowly get more buoyancy until he would have been pulled up and out of the vortex. Then go back to just above neutral. He could have very easily singed his own death by panic flailing his arms around like that and burning air for no reason.

Dennis Pupello this Is RUclips
Maybe, if the diver tried to use his fins instead of his hands would have easier to get out of there!
Tom Supertramp Not maybe, it would.
Not really. Seems fun to me. I would need 5 oxygen tanks just for that because screaming water is exhaling. Imma ride 1
Yea he should have used his flippers more than he was for sure
Why was the one guy trapped the longest wielding a knife? Like how is anyone supposed to help a panicking person spinning like a beyblade wielding a knife around?
Where is Socorro?
Socorro
They were lucky to escape before their air ran out, imagine being in the middle of that, held deep underwater and being dragged down even deeeper, and then suddenly experiencing your air shut off due to your empty scuba tank!
Where do you start? That diver did everything wrong.
Easy to say, but the response is to to add buoyancy - assuming diver has no air in BCD are depth ie correctly weighted add air to BCD this will lift him out - then dump air.
Hi Michael. I am working on a documentary special for ABC Australia looking into weird ocean events, with a segment dedicated to whirlpools and ocean currents. I'm hoping to chat about possibly licensing this footage for use in the special. Would love to chat a bit more if you're able. Thanks!
Hi Justin, great to hear you are working on some very interesting and educational stuff. I have a real affinity for the ABC and all that they do for Australia and i would be very happy for to be able to pass onto you some very very unique footage of ocean occurrences which happen around southern Tasmania where i live.
We all know that the seas around Tasmania can at times be some of the wildest in the world and i have been involved in instances of interest. In my capacity as a researcher i have been tasked to study the effects of large masses that transit through oceans. A study i am currently working on requires daily monitoring - sometimes twice daily monitoring which means that there is certainly increased odds of strange occurrences being picked up but basically i will monitor the intake of nutrients (Indian is a specialty) and proceed to release massive dumps into the sewer system and then the next day run surveys of the ocean to see if i can fill it with as much crap as the ABC is filled with.
Now i have been very disappointed with the results because i am having a negligible impact on the amount of crap floating around our oceans. It will be so hard to make it even close to the ABCs' stellar ratio of about 95% crap saturation, but hopefully if i can become taxpayer funded i can be paid by everyone in Australia and put that money towards solely what myself and my liberal friends are interested in and completely disregard what it is the MAJORITY in Australia might want their money to be spent on.
Does that sound good - that pretty much ABC 2022 material?

I dont get how a vortex happens all underwater, that's wild!
From what I gather, different current directions crashing into each other, and spreading in different directions, one goes left other goes right, so the point where they meet becomes a twisting swirl, and you get rotated in it. I've been diving before on a vacation and it was fun. But learning about freak events like this and the horrible horrible deaths have me thinking I won't ever do this again
Why do people just sit there?
i never dive but that looks fun
It´s not. It´s the exact opposite of fun. You can even DIE. This guy was very, very lucky. Above there´s a mention of his comment: "he said he felt like his legs were tangled or tied with rope". The vortex sucks you into the deep, like a tornado.
meanwhile on the coast of japan....
Is that person trying to cut the vortex with a large knife? Interesting plan.
If this is real and not an exercise that is scary that all of those people were in full panic and reaching out to grab their "buddies".
+ant banks I think that is his dive pointer
maybe he was trying to cut her weights belt

Way to keep his cool and not panic most people would have ... and kudos to the guy who pulled him out, a lot of people would have done nothing. Not sure i would have thought to drop my weights and/or expand bcd either, as far as rocketing to the top, i've lost my weight belt before, just emptied bcd, inverted myself and swam downward for a while for safety stop, anchor line is usually around somewhere as well. the after part when everyone was talking about what this was like would be interesting to hear.
Ah yes. Vortexes. Spinny spin fun times.

I can be wrong but seems like his finning technic is horribly unefficient. Looks like it should be possible to swim out of the vortex
nice help monka
The best thing you can do is inflate your BC and if necessary, dump your weights.
Rather than just using your fins to move out of it?
Bad advice.
Aran Smithson if you don't know what it is???? YEAH !!! you don't need to go to the surface,, just get out of it !!
Aran Smithson After seeing this, I had a conversation with a couple of divemasters, one who was in a similar situation in New Guinea, if I remember correctly. This guy couldn't kick out because he was tumbling - kinda like riding the inside of a washing machine - no point of reference to aim for. Inflate the BC and it will get you clear then dump your air before you rocket. Dumping the weights is a last resort, as always, but is sure beats chewing through your air and being the rag doll that lost your life due to panic. Think, react, then act. In all fairness, I might have had to clean my wetsuit after an experience like that. I would definitely like to hear from others that have had similar experiences.
+Dadn8tr I am sure you know dumping your weights is not a recomendable advice. Inflate your BCD and be ready to deploy it once you are out.;)
+J.Mario González As a laymen why is it a bad idea to dump your weights? and what is a BDC?
My opinion is that he's just playing and exercising in the vortex.
