    I totally agree... I think as black women we are so thirsty to see our stories told that we can't be objective. I've seen the movie and the series ...didn't care for Nola in general. She was a very self absorbed character ...and very needy. She wasn't a good friend either which bothered me way more than her 3 baes... I didn't think she deserved Opal at all, she uses her & dating someone with a child requires a high level of selflessness that she never showed having. However i loved the actress playing Nola. If it gets a second season i would love to see Nola do some self reflection and spend sometime not engaging anyone intimately but herself. Self awareness is a beautiful thing. Just my opinion.

      Thank you so much for sharing your take Alexis! You made really great points! i definitely hear what you’re saying about people being so happy to finally see certain stories be told that it can be hard to be objective. And i would love to see Nola grow into herself and become more self-aware.

    I agree with your review for the most part. I wanted to like Nola but quite honestly, I found her to be annoying and instead of intelligently explaining why she was upset with the guys, she always just threw a temper tantrum and walked away like a child when they didn't naturally "get it".

    I don't think she was supposed to be likeable. I think she was supposed to be understandable. Living in Brooklyn, always being cat called, guys trying to control her, life of a painter struggling to make ends meet, I think she is just trying to live her life and her being cold is her personality. She's unlikeable cause she's blunt but she's not supposed to be sweet. This show isn't supposed to be a poster kid for people like Nola, it's supposed to be just Nola Darling.

    Why do people question Nola's brownstone in NYC?? Did anyone question Carrie Bradshaw's Brownstone, Manolo's, and ten thousand dollar dresses? Carrie was a writer, writer's are broke! However, you stood for Carrie...But when its a black show, we want answers?? TF.
    It's entertainment.
    I actually liked the series.

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  6 лет назад +7

      Actually I️ question Nola’s brownstone exactly like I️ question Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment. Totally unrealistic for Carrie to be able to afford such a beautiful apartment alone in NYC with a walk in closet on a freelance writers salary with no help from anyone else (plus pay for Monolos and thousand dollars dresses) because it's mad expensive! I’m not questioning Nola’s brownstone because of her race, I’m questioning it because it doesn’t seem realistic just like Carries living situation doesn’t seem realistic. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and glad you enjoyed the series!

      My dear, I am from NYC..born and raised...I've lived in the Bronx for 16 years, so nothing you are saying is news to me. My point, which you seemed to have missed.... Especially, 2 months after the initial argument- is that despite the high cost of brownstones no one questioned Carrie Bradshaw's apt, or couture clothing... And, Carrie was a broke writer. It was VERY UNLIKELY for Carrie to legitimately have that apt and those things. But SATC was a white show, and no one was too critical of the micro-details, it was simply regarded as entertainment.
      With this show, which is equally entertaining , everyone seems to want to hyper-critique it... If you weren't that critical about SATC, then don't come with different energy to critique this black art.
      Many people sweat anything created by white people, but want to rip things to shreds if its created by a POC... It wasn't perfect, but it was art, chill.
      And if you're a millennial born in the 2000's with no CULTURAL CONTEXT of anything.. Then STFU, trying to critique the opinions of 30 somethings with cultural schema...Focus on wiping your ass correctly, child!

    It's apparent you didn't watch the original movie. The series really stuck to the move but more update. The series was actually written by women. Spike Lee gave women a chance to be more verbal this time. You sound really naive and out of touch.

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  6 лет назад +7

      i really appreciate you watching my review and sharing your thoughts, it’s always nice to hear different perspectives! my thoughts are you shouldn’t have to have watched the original movie in order to understand and connect with the show. i hadn’t seen the movie when i did my review bc i wasn’t doing a movie vs tv show comparison but i have seen it since and i still stand by what i said about the show. after watching the film, i felt the show didn’t do enough to really show us just how controlling the men in nola’s life were. they had a lot more time in the tv show and could’ve really expanded upon that. it was super clear in the movie and they had way less time to pull it off. i also liked the actress who played Nola a lot better in the film than in the tv show. i think more could’ve been done in the show to make us root for Nola but i just thought she was very unlikeable. i would also say that we’re coming from different perspectives while watching this - i’m a young millennial woman and the show felt out of date and out of touch to me. i completely understand the purpose and messages of the show, but i don’t think they modernized it in a successful way. Maybe they needed more younger millennial women in the writers room.

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  6 лет назад +6

      hey @omooshun94602 and @walter boothe, would be glad to keep discussing the show with you guys! i don't think it's fair to say you needed to watch the movie in order to appreciate the tv show. if an adaptation is done well, going back to the original source material really just reinforces what you watched and gives you additional background information. the tv show should be able to stand on its own. and i'm not sure if i missed something in my research of the tv production, but to my knowledge, while the writers and directors were talented black men and women, they weren't younger millennials who could give more insight into what life is like for a young person today. all the writers and directors i saw as part of this project were all at least 40 and 50+ years old. would've been great to see them tap into some young talent to really help channel and bring to life a woman in her 20s in 2017. i totally get all of your takes and that the film is super important to a lot of people. my take is really that i wish they showed us a little more of the men in Nola's life taking advantage of her and trying to own and possess her because that's a huge part of the film and helps you relate to Nola. like i've said in previous comments, they did a really great job showing us that in the film, but i didn't see it in the tv show...i felt like i was seeing a stereotype of what young millennial women are like today in some instances. again so great to be able to have a deep convo on our thoughts on this production with you both! :)

      Kristen Maldonado I agree. The writing definitely seemed like it was coming for older people. • @rossanalala

    the series is so realistic, and I think you took it too personally forgetting that you're watching a series. It's not weird that a woman can date three different men, that a woman can be mean because probably all the men she got in the past tried to posses her, she's probably tired and she's having fun. Moreover, she's very honest with her men, they know about each other, but still they don't give up on Nola because they're fighting to "own" her and she just makes fun of the situation. And despite the story, the series is wonderfully shot!

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  6 лет назад +4

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and I definitely agree that the shots looked really nice. Just want to say I never said that it's weird for a woman to date three different men or that a woman can't be mean. Women can absolutely do that. I'm saying I don't think the show did a good job in showing us these men trying to own, change, or possess her. I think the movie did a much better job with that. I'm not taking the show personally, I'm reviewing it based on what I thought about it. I thought Nola was unlikeable, selfish, and couldn't take care of herself, and I didn't see the men in her life try to possess and own her like they did in the movie. I wish they had spent more time on that because it came across very clearly in the movie.

      all those dots mean that you're being ironic?! XD All people in this world have had bad experience with girl/boyfriends once in their life, and punish the next person you date is not acceptable or reasonable (that's pretty obvious), but not all people think the same way you do or I do. It's a fact that past relationships leave something in your persona and change the way you look at new relationships, you can react in different ways and a way to react is probably told in the movie. (Sorry if there's something wrong in my English tho, I'm italian)

    • @rossanalala
      @rossanalala 6 лет назад

      it's not all about selfishness and reaction to trauma (we don't even know if she had a trauma), I think she's just searching herself through others, she probably needs to enrich and strengthen her personality. Also, Nora is not depicted as awesome or independent, she always run out of money and needs the rich guy to buy her paintings and pay the rent for her, she's very insicure and a bit paranoid and needs the other two to be more confident and carefree, even her paintings are not that great...

      It’s realistic for a struggling artist who can’t pay her rent to live in a brownstone apartment by herself? Her landlord even says in the episodes that she’s giving Nola a huge deal and would make a ton more money if they gave the apartment to someone else who wasn’t a family friend. I’m going off of what we learned in the series...

    I totally get your perspective. Though, I found myself identifying with Nola. When I was younger, I was super selfish at times, didn’t have my shit together at times and could be irresponsible or unwilling to take responsibility for my own actions. I found the way she disregarded the men to also be behavior I recognized from men in my past. But I think you are right, it was a lot of ugly packed into one character and she was pretty unlikeable. I think she was real in some ways too. She’s a young somewhat clueless girl with strong opinions about things she’s too young/naive to fully grasp. I imagine 40 year old Nola will be quite a bit more self aware.

      @kaymaldo  6 лет назад +4

      Thanks for watching my review and sharing your thoughts. I️ totally get what you’re saying about Nola being young and naive but to me I️ could see this making more sense if Nola was in her late teens or early 20s. I️n the show they said she was like 26 or 27 and that just seemed kind of older to me and at an age where you’re taking more responsibility for yourself. Maybe this show was sharing that not everyone is in that place or has everything together in their late 20s which is very true and I️ can respect that but at the same time I️ think if they made her younger I️ could’ve gotten behind her actions more and given her more of the benefit of the doubt.

    Regardless of the other comments, I think there was more you could've touched on in this review honestly. I agree that Nola just wasnt likeable for me. I couldnt relate to her, and she's supposed to be around my age.. Im a struggling female black artist, so i related to her struggle with her art. BUT. THE AMOUNT OF DISRESPECT. Everyone seems to just brush past how she treats people in this show. AND no i havent watched the original film. That shouldnt be something I have to do to enjoy the show and yall know it. Polygamy isn't like that. There's mutual agreement between all parties involved. The only lover that knew about everyone and was okay with it was Opal. Shes the only one that was getting Nola's respect....why though?? Nothing is wrong with a woman dating multiple men but to label herself as polygamous is insulting. and horrible representation. That hurts more than helps. She can be pan, she can be whatever but the fact that the show is making it seem thats how a polygamous relationship is ran is WRONG. AND now, besides that, the disrespect for the men in her life. They were curious if there were other men, but never did they say that she couldnt see other people. they may have voiced how they wanted her to themselves and wished things were different but never did they overstep their right to give feedback. theyre involved regardless how anyone thinks, how they feel matters, how she treats them matters. just because theyre men, doesnt mean shes allowed to play victim constantly and attack them all as if they embody "all men" and that they put her in this box and control her. A man grabbing her at night resulted in her attacking all three guys as if they had something to do with it. And thats wrong. To finally introduce them at the end and say if you have a problem, deal with it. Is wrong. Its fine to be unapologetic. But completely disregarding others and accusing them of things that arent happening "controling her" is wrong. When shes the one with rules and regulations that come with seeing her, whose the controlling one really? Its wrong to look at Opal as the best pick, yes she has her shit together but Nola is only interested because shes not a man. She feels men want to control too much so she ran to a woman. Who got very little screen time and constantly points out how Nola is childish. Yet people think shes the best pick. which goes back to polygamy, there is no "best pick" in a real polygamous relationship. im sorry, i really hate bad representation. But anyway, this rant got long, I agree with your review, please ignore the backlash. this show isnt modernized enough quite honestly, and treating people with respect isnt something to overlook.

      Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! I agree with everything you said. You also brought some more light on the polyamory topic which you’re right is super important. I was thinking about how it’s great to show different representation but at the same time bad representation isn’t something we should tolerate. The show didn’t handle that storyline well at all. It has been picked up for a second season so I may check that out to see if it gets any better.

    Hello dear viewer,
    I’ve gotten a bunch of similar comments on this video lately and wanted to address a few things!
    First, this video is solely a review of Netflix’s original series She’s Gotta Have It. I did not review or discuss the movie or the general story of She’s Gotta Have It in this video. I️ am only talking about what I️ took away from the TV show itself.
    Second, I have since watched the original film and I thought Nola was a much more likable character in the movie than in the show, which is interesting since it’s the same source material. I️ stand by what I️ said that I️ still didn’t like Nola in the TV show and thought that the movie clearly showed us how Greer, Jamie and Mars were trying to own and control her while the TV show did not do enough to show us this. I️ do want to note that while I️ don’t think watching the movie necessarily matters in a review of solely the TV show, I️ very much appreciate the request for more detail and research in my reviews and will make the effort to do more so I️ can explain myself better. (Please let me know if that means you’d like me to do a further deep dive in a new video discussing both the movie and TV show together!)
    Third, I️ am in no way shape or form saying that it is not okay for Nola to be selfish or date multiple men at once or be the sexual being that she is. That is absolutely okay and her right. Women can do whatever they want! I️ definitely support the feminism, empowerment, and sexual representation in this show, as I️ mention in my review.
    Thank you all so much for your comments and for watching my review! I️ hear you and want to make sure I️ address everything you want to talk about whether it’s in the video or even in the comments below.
    Much love!

    Watching your review and reading the comments makes it so clear to me men and women are at our cores completely different. I watched this series rolling my eyes at every turn because none of it made any sense. For one I get why men would want to sleep with here she's pretty but there is nothing she gives to any of these men and Opal to make the audience understand why on earth they would put up with her flaky selfish ways out side of her being cute. It's NY guys cute people everywhere it's not enough to make someone pay your rent and support your weird mood swings. Yes Jamie was a cheater but she was fully aware hell even his wife was everyone's eyes were wide open so I don't get why that's even being brought up. And yes she can sleep with multiple guys enjoy have fun but she's also looking for boyfriend actions from these guys. She can have all the rules she wants but she still counts on everyone for financial and emotional support while giving nothing in return she is classic example of a parasite. Hell she has the nerve to offer her therapist a damn painting for payment as if that woman doesn't have bills and rent too.
    One of the worst depictions of a black female character I've ever seen. And if all you can say is she's empowered because of sleeping with multiple men maybe you need to learn what empowerment is.

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  6 лет назад +2

      I️ think you make a lot of great points here. I️ do want to say I’m not saying it’s necessarily empowering because she’s sleeping with three men. I’m saying it’s empowering that as a woman she is owning her sexuality and sexual identity and if that means sleeping with three men and a woman then good for her.

    when you said mediocre painting,i can tell you have NO artistic tasteif every thing in the show was wrong that was the one thing that was RIGHT , IT was BEAUTIFUL, the ending was a tribute to prince since him and spike lee were friends. the reason she could afford her rent was because her landlord and her parents were friends and she was renting it for a REDUCED rate (she kept stating it), that's how even her being broke she could still afford it. She was mad at her friend for releasing her art because that was a piece she wanted to release anonymously and wasnt ready "emotionally" for it to be connected to her yet . Your review was very surface, there was no depth, so i can see how watching it things went right over your head.

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  6 лет назад

      I’m glad you enjoyed the show! Art and reviews are subjective so we’re both welcome to our own opinions. This is what I️ took away from the show - was there something I️ could’ve done in my review to hit something deeper? Not sure what you mean exactly about a “surface level” review. Would love to learn more!
      I’m trying to remember when I️ said mediocre and I️ think I️ was trying to reference Nola doing her art show and no one being impressed with her work. The three headed monster painting also really just rubbed me the wrong way. If these men are a monster to Nola why would she even want that toxic type of vibe in her life?
      I️ will say Nola wasn’t able to afford her rent. Even though the landlord was a family friend and Nola was getting a reduced rate she still struggled and was months behind her rent. That’s why she needed Jamie’s help and freaked out at him when the check bounced. The landlord even said that she needed to get her the money soon or she’d have to start renting to someone else who would pay more. And I️ understand Nola being upset about her friend revealing the art since it’s so personal but they were trying to help her make ends meet. They were coming from a good place and were proud of her work.
      Thanks for watching my review and sharing your thoughts!

    I completely agree with you. You're allowed to have a flawed or unlikable character but I just don't think the series was executed as well as it could have been. I wanted to love it. I watched it more than once. But on the second viewing I liked it even less because of all the things you mentioned. I also dislike how scolding the writers seemed when dealing with the topic of body image and the fact that Nola only seem to want to be with a woman when she was "celibate".

      @kaymaldo  6 лет назад

      Yesss I️ completely agree with you too. I didn’t get into it in this video but the way they handled the body image section was so awkward it verged on parody at some points. And the point about Opal is super valid too. I️ didn’t even think of that but that’s a really great point! I actually really liked the show :) the subjects in the story weren’t too deep, they could’ve dealt with for example feminism in a way more serious and complex way. But that would’ve added a darker atmosphere.
    Also I didn’t think Nola wasn’t likeable. She has flaws and she’s selfish a lot of times, but also she’s young and she’s discovering what’s important for her in life. And she had been honest with the guys from the start but still the guys try to own her. For example Jamie, who is a really nice and loving guy, stills tries to change her and make her his girlfriend which isn’t romantic, in my opinion that’s toxic behaviour. Also he’s taking care of her but uses that to make her dependent. Third, he’s married to another woman and she mentioned to him that the thing with Nola wasn’t the first time he though he‘d found his soulmate. Which shows that he is naive as well.
    Anyhow I like about the show that all the characters were really likeable for me, eventhough they weren’t flawless:)
    For me it was a simple story about a woman finding herself as an artist and as a black woman in New York :)
    I’d criticise though that the actors were all very very pretty and very thin, Nola was basically perfect. So they couldve done more on the „Body positivity“end maybe. 🤔

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  5 лет назад +1

      Glad to hear you enjoyed the show! I understand flawed and selfish characters, but I have to say I don't think Nola was that young. She's in her late 20s, almost 30, so I think that's why I expected her to be a little more self aware. I also didn't think the guys tried to own her -- or at least the way it was portrayed wasn't as pointed as it was in the movie. I gotta agree though -- Jamie was THE WORST. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts -- will you be watching season 2 too?

I feel like they want me to scream girl power at the top of my lungs when she unveils that painting but it's fucked up to depict someone nude without permission AND THEN show others. @kaymaldo  6 лет назад

      I know you addressed Katheryn here but I wanted to say something... I don’t agree that only a black woman can understand Nola’s perspective. I am so very glad though that we are getting more racially and sexually inclusive stories, that’s something I always have and always will support in life, in the content we consume, and of course have been very verbal about on my channel. Everyone has different opinions so you are totally entitled to your own if you enjoyed the show and liked Nola. I didn’t but I’m definitely open to seeing if my thoughts change when the second season comes out. My feelings had more to do with the fact that I thought she acted very immature for her age. Take a look at Yara Shahidi’s character on Grown-ish. She is a younger character who definitely makes mistakes and doesn’t always do the right thing but at the same time you still relate and connect with her and like her. Not every character needs to be likeable of course as I mentioned in my video, but I think what Yara’s character has is what Nola was missing.

      Ummmm....I'm black! So your statement is not true. Her character is selfish, self-centered, drama-inducing, and so inconsiderate to those around her. A main character doesn’t have to be likeable or a good person. But at the same time you should be able to sympathize with them or be able to care what happens to them. Tony soprano isn’t a good person what so ever but you follow him because he’s sympathetic and human. Good video.

  • @camilaa.6510
    @camilaa.6510 5 лет назад +3

    I don’t get why you need to put her down to talk about the show and why you think a character should be perfect or closer to how you see life. I find her struggles very real and relatable, I wish I, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that, didn’t fuck up and freaked out and destroyed what was actually good for me or hurt people that cared for me or that I wasn’t sometimes self absorbed dragging others along to some shit they didn’t even deserved.
    So yeah, hard to see a character that is the opposite of what we wished for her to be, for that strong fierce woman to be. Not the perfect example of the mighty hero you were looking for, to throw all your hopes at, but hey, she ain’t there to be your hero or anyone else’s for that matter, nor to hold the fucking flag of other’s expectations. So we should accept what it is as just what it is. And the show as a whole has some really powerful messages and empowering words. Like that therapist that I just wanted sitting by my bed telling me how to get through life every damn day when I wake up.
    You seem quite a nice person so I’ll have to comment on what seemed to me a pretty shitty judgmental this clickbait tittle of your video . But that’s internet nowadays, I guess. :/

      Hey Camila, it's totally fine that we have differing opinions on Nola -- I didn't connect with her and felt like she was very different from the Nola in the original film, but I appreciate you sharing your thoughts! I totally get where you're coming from. I don't think a character needs to be perfect but I felt like Nola in the original film made more sense to me because she was coming from this place dealing with guys who treated her like crap. I don't think the guys in this show were anywhere near as awful as the ones in the movie, which I think is what made Nola's character not work for me.

    I kind of agree on the likability part, although i did connect with the character. But then again - why is likability so important? Isn’t it also important in the representation of black women to also be represented as imperfect human beings in stead of being stereotyped in a positive discrimination kinda way? This was a phase she had to go through after, amongst others, being harassed, and not all developmental stages are that fluffy on the outside. That her developmental stage is not congruent with her age as you say - why dictate where one should be at a certain age and judge if they don’t match up with your schemes? I think it’s very common to go back and forth and having different stages of development within oneself and everybody has a different journey.

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  6 лет назад

      You definitely make a lot of sense. I guess I’m just going off my own experiences, like you are. Likability isn’t super important but I find even the best actors can make you love to hate a character. I don’t think it was necessarily Nola herself that I didn’t like, but perhaps the actresses portrayal of her. After watching the movie, I did understand that version of Nola. But I found that even though the movie and tv show are the same source material, they evoked different feelings for me. I connected to the Nola in the movie, I didn’t connect to the Nola in the show. It’s interesting when you think about it! I am curious to see how Nola grows in season 2.

    I agree with the comment that a lot about the series makes more sense if you watch the original film. I realize everyone who watched the series is going to watch the original, but I strongly recommend that if you're going to do a review, take the time and make the effort to explore the continuity between the movie and the series. Also, these situations, such as infidelity, happen all the time. The fact that Nola is in her twenties seems to be developmentally in sync with how the actress portrays her. Finally, characters don't have to be likable for a series to be very successful, and to send powerful messages (such as Mad Men). Do women always have to be portrayed as "caring," especially in relation to men, when the same is not expected of male characters?

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching my review and sharing your thoughts! I️ think you make a lot of great points. You’re definitely right that characters don’t have to be likable for a show to be successful. I had a few examples in my video of other characters that are not necessarily likable but there’s something about them that makes you root for them - like Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series. And I️ agree that women don’t need to be portrayed as caring when men aren’t. My issue with this show was that the main struggle is that the men are supposed to be very controlling and not really care about anything but owning Nola but I️ didn’t see that in the show. So to me I️ felt like I️ was watching a show where Nola TOLD us about how these guys were trying to own her instead of the series actually SHOWING us (besides with Jamie bc he was the worst) and that made me feel like her actions didn’t really make sense. In regards to my review not tackling the movie, I’ve done plenty of book vs movie type of reviews, but this wasn’t one of them. I️ was just reviewing the series by itself which I️ feel should be able to stand on its own. To me if you NEED to watch the movie to just understand the story then this doesn’t seem like a very successful tv show adaptation. I️ do get including more info about the movie in my general review though and will definitely look to do more of that in my upcoming videos. Watching the movie should be an additive thing like cool this is where the show came from. I️ have since watched the movie though and I️ still stand by what I️ said about Nola. It’s interesting bc even though it’s the same source material, I️ can see the difference in the movie where Nola is just doing her thing and these guys are terrible vs in the show where there guys didn’t really do much and we followed Nola being ungrateful to her friends and telling us about how these guys want to own her and not actually seeing it. Do you know what I️ mean? Either way I️ appreciate hearing your thoughts on the show!

      It’s my opinion and that’s what I took away from the show. I hope we see Nola grow in season 2. I think Nola as a character is too old to be acting like she is. If she was 21, totally get it. But the character is in her late 20s, nearly pushing 30s. I think she should’ve been a bit more mature. I guess we’ll see what happens in the next season.

      Who the hell has it all together in their twenties? Oh my, so much living to do. 1st Women writers 2) Did you study the artist who is doing the art for the movie Mediocre?? Do you know that that tribute as well as the opening score is paying homage to Prince and Brooklyn.AND Don't forget that Brooklyn is a part of the cast. There are so many wonderful thought-provoking topics in this show besides sexuality.. for example gentrification, hair (weave vs natural) homelessness, our veterans, the end of the Obama in the white house and the Trump "making America great again the right a woman has to her own body and what she wears,, from has She is an only child, and moreover she is an artist ...being an artist has a set of quirky personality traits. If you saw the original it is so true to the movie but from a woman's perspective as well. Also some of us appreciate Spike Lee being Spike Lee ...the choreographed dance scene to tell the story, the way he shoots and directs with people still while the background is moving. Spike is different. He is Black. He is Brooklyn and he is still speaking for the culture.

      I didn’t say everyone had it together in their 20s, I just didn’t relate to Nola as a character. And I recognize that Spike Lee is paying tribute to Brooklyn and more, but I felt that the film came across differently to me than this show did. I understood what the film was trying to portray and thought it worked, but I didn’t think the show did it well. That’s just my opinion. Very happy to hear you share your thoughts on the project, it’s great to discuss with people who have differing views. I’m glad you liked the show!

      I guess I can relate to still being somewhat immature. I totally get her character she is an only child who did not not have to share with any siblings she takes a lot for granted but I like her doing what a guy does. I I don't know how I got in to see this movie. way tooo young(Iv'e been 5'10 since I want 10 though), but I saw Nola and I wanted to take my 20's and just be as happy and as selfish and do me without being considered a hoe (whereas men are players permitted to have side chicks) for one decade of fun... I like Nola taking charge. and I appreciate your opinion and I did enjoy this season very much.

      i watched it and was surprised by how similar and different it was. In just a few short hours Spike Lee was really able to show us how awful those guys were to Nola in the film, i think the guys in the tv show were too nice. To me Nola was more likeable in the film and she still rubbed me the wrong way in the show. It actually gave me a lot to think about - not sure if anyone may be interested in a movie vs tv show comparison video but I’m kinda thinking about it.

      Thanks for watching my video and sharing your opinion! i don’t feel i wasted my time watching and reviewing the show, it was a lot of fun to talk about. And i’d never seen the movie prior so there wasn’t anything to be biased about. i understand the show is based off a movie but i think it should still be able to stand on its own. i’ve since watched the movie and i liked it miles better than the show actually. i thought you could really see in the film how the men were trying to own and control Nola. i didn’t see that in the tv show and thought they could’ve done a better job showcasing that aspect. my review was on the show itself and my thoughts on it, not on the movie vs the show.

      I'm not saying its unrealistic to live in a brownstone -- but in Nola's case as a struggling artist who discusses throughout the season the issues she has affording her own rent, then yeah I didn't think it was super realistic. The fact that NOLA Darling was so unlikable to you speaks volumes about the work. I listened to your review again after someone commented on my post and realized you weren't critiquing the plot , no discussions about the cultural context, major themes, or details about the legacy of the work. I think you may be too young for this. Its reminiscent of a great time for many others and the second season is soon coming. Spike is also tying in political views and the state the country is in, paying homage to many artist our black artist gone to soon and long past that millenials should know about but don't. There is this other generation that wants to embrace happy memories with present day drama....listen to capital one commercials they music is 80s for Us with credit and looking to open businesses and home ownership everything just may not be for ya'll. • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  5 лет назад

      I agree not everything is for everyone. I will probably still check out season 2 to see what I think. You’re right I didn’t really focus on the cultural context, although I did discuss some of the themes of the show in relation to Nola’s character. My issue is mainly that I don’t think they did a great job expressing Nola’s character in this show. I understand Nola’s character in the movie 100%, but in this show I felt that Nola was acting too immature for her age of 27 and I just didn’t believe her choices. I thought the movie was much better than the show. I was also just discussing the show itself not the legacy of the work - but if that’s what people are interested in seeing I can definitely bring up those topics if I review season 2.

    • @HairAffairbyElle
      @HairAffairbyElle 5 лет назад

      I know a Nola or two. In my profession I get to hear real life all day. You just focused so much on this character in such a personal judgmental manner almost an attack on her character. The " three headed monster" was introduced in the movie. I loved Nola going to jail with Da Mayor. That actress did her job she brought it. You didn't like her because of what someone did to you and if the actor evoked this in you then she brought her heart to that role. Art critics folliw a certain formula with the key elements I mentioned.

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  5 лет назад

      That’s not true, I just gave one example of how I connected to the storyline. I’ve seen the film and the show - I felt the film made it more clear where Nola was coming from and truly showed the men in her life trying to control her. I didn’t see that in this show, maybe they could’ve done a better job in the series then of showing us how awful these guys were because I didn’t see it. I don’t know what your profession is but my review led me to talk more about Nola as a character because that’s where I felt the disconnect. It felt forced to me. I know people take this review on my channel too personally because they feel connected to the history of the project but this was my opinion and I stand by what I thought. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts even if we don’t agree!

    • @HairAffairbyElle
      @HairAffairbyElle 5 лет назад

      Oh it was just because you said that you had dated someone who was selfish like Nolan that's why I felt you connected it to the character a little more than just s a Critic

    • @kaymaldo
      @kaymaldo  5 лет назад

      Well it’s my RUclips channel which has a personal aspect to it and I related to a part of the storyline so I shared that as an example but that one anecdote didn’t define my whole viewing experience. I didn’t think they showed us enough of how the guys were awful so instead it just made Nola seem awful, as least in my opinion. Like I said, I connected to Nola’s story way more in the movie than in this show which is interesting because it’s the same source material. That’s why I feel like there was a disconnect.

      I totally agree that Jamie was terrible. In my review I️ said he was the one guy that I️ REALLY didn’t like. He was jealous and obviously a serial cheater on his wife which is messed up. I️ didn’t think Nola did anything wrong...I️ was talking more about what I️ took away from Nola’s personality. I️ really wish they had showed us more about how terrible the guys were because besides Jamie I️ didn’t really get that from the show. I thought that missing piece made me dislike Nola because I️ saw her as being immature and unable to take care of herself and pretty ungrateful - not even just to the guys but to her friends too. Whenever she talked to her friends it was always about Nola Nola Nola even though they wanted support too. The movie on the other hand was super clear and concise about how we were supposed to feel because the guys were awful to Nola. And I️ definitely agree with you that double standards about men and women in relationships are terrible. I️ don’t think Nola’s doing anything wrong by dating these three men, I️ just wish they did more to show us that they were controlling and trying to own Nola. It was more Nola talking about it than us seeing it, besides the case of Jamie of course. Thanks for watching my review and sharing your thoughts!
