This is an extremely simple project and is based on few components, so it can be easily replicated by users with less technical skills. However, its possibilities are almost limitless, so it is disappointing that it has been discontinued. The display can show everything, from time and weather data, to Facebook or Instagram Likes or even games like Snake or Pong.
The minimal version contains only an ESP32 MCU board and a 16x2 Color Matrix.

Hard coding your host IP address is not a good option since the addresses can change often. You could set up a static address in your router settings but then you also have to turn off MAC randomisation which is a security feature, this is fine if it is just a desktop PC at home but for mobile devices it isn’t a great option. A better option would be to have the IP address of the display fixed and then you can access it by using its IP address instead or you could build in the ability for it to display its own IP address which would mean you don’t need a static IP address.
