- DARPA’s Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency (RACER) program recently conducted its third experiment to assess the performance of off-road unmanned vehicles. These test runs, conducted March 12-27, included the first with completely uninhabited RACER Fleet Vehicles (RFVs), with a safety operator overseeing in a supporting chase vehicle. The goal of the RACER program is to demonstrate autonomous movement of combat-scale vehicles in complex, mission-relevant off-road environments that are significantly more unpredictable than on-road conditions.
The multiple courses were in the challenging and unforgiving terrain of the Mojave Desert at the U.S. Army’s National Training Center (NTC) in Ft. Irwin, California. As at the previous events, teams from Carnegie Mellon University, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the University of Washington participated. Additionally, researchers from the Army Research Laboratory demonstrated the flexibility of the performer team’s autonomy software, critical to transitioning RACER capabilities to the services. This completed the project’s first phase.
I could definitely see this technology being first implemented as an emergency feature. So, say a soldier or team is injured and cannot drive, they could have the vehicle take control and drive them to rescue.
Yes. Also if they need a medivac under intense fire without needing to put another human at risk. Resupply. Scout/Recon. The skies the limit.
way too expensive unless they manage to cut off the lidar sensors and use a Raspberry pi instead. Besides if it ever gets into the hands of the enemies then good luck trying to stop a suicide vehicle (if were strictly talking about front lines in a war)
But it could be a great way to autonomize logistics for example. Especially in countries with bad infrastructure or infrastructure that is damaged due to war (like in ukraine). They could send an autonomous drone to check if there are any major obstacles and if there isnt any then they send an autonomous logistics truck
Respect from Poland! Amazing!
Looks good so far.
Give it a companion drone that flies overhead for a bird's eye view of the terrain ahead.
Great vehicle. Sounds like it is gas-powered? I assume it is working with GPS in order to be autonomous? A large-scale armored troop carrier working on this principle could be used to get soldiers out of a difficult situation. Just send it out and let it pick them up. No driver so no problems with the driver being shot. Plus a couple of guns on it working with AI. 👌👍
Why have the driver at all just like a video game
Granted this is probably in the press release etc and/or this is classified, but was Navigation done by Waypoints being designated, and the Vehicle doing all the rest, or was there more direct but remote guidance being done and/or was this a preplanned route?
Related to this is the question of what Training data has this had? (Does it work in other environments, or does it only work in this biome well due to only being trained there?)
If the war drags on, i hope that battle robots will join the battfield of Ukraine sooner or lqter.
No, we've sent them enough money.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing. This seems like an easy task and and easy technology for DARPA. I guess that's why it's being shared. What would be neat to see on here is the background behind the rapid vaccine technology that DARPA had in their arsenal for years. How long did DARPA have the technology? I bet a long, long time. Thanks for releasing the technology that saved the world! Now we can begin to have cancer vaccines!
I bet we have some really cool stuff now
Cool, and I think we need to shoot for one of these devices winning the Baja 500. It's possible and it can be done.
That thing is moving, Nice 🤔
I hope they turn on you first!😊
Imagine mounting anti-tank guns, drone launching equipment and med bot?
Sorry for my english, i'm not a native
I have a Project about a motor without need of fuel
I need a meeting with an engineer from US embasy in Romania, Bucharest
Thank you
Am I the only one who thought this thing would look great on Abrams?
Wow a polaris
🤩
I am much more impressed with Ukraine rebuilding RC cars and Drones...
Combine with GPS, and options for use are limitless lol
tesla crying rn
How is that toy going to be effective with mass killing of humanity. Better get back to work boys.
☆•° Ok....there is no "human driver"; and no steerage clutch; floor pedals....etc; for not even an android~robot human figured "replacement"; to maneuver the vehicle? ☆○•The vehicle is solely AI controlled~manipulated..via bi-located remote access;...motherboard chip; cpu? ○°I assume that newer upgraded; "allegedly" highly explosive "lithium" (or other types) fueled batteries are used for the contraptions "actions -movement"!?☆○ °what happens if the vehicle malfunctions...or the "innards" are hacked; falling into adversarial enemy control hands...is there a "shutdown~kill switch"?○•° a tad bit confused am i!!☆○°perhaps i misunderstand!!•☆°♡•peace out!!◇♧◇

Although wars fought to support neo-colonialism/ neo-liberalism WERE HORRIBLE (and in some cases, are, although this is at least if I remember correctly (and hopefully) this is no longer true as) they are now a thing of the past.
Also Granted attributing things to one person/group isn’t good history, the “Long Peace” we have had (albeit to an extent at the expense of many areas in the formerly colonized world/global south, although they would probably be drawn into WW3 one way or another so eh?) is mostly due to Deterrence and Overmatch by the USA Military, NATO, and their Allies.
Of course Economic Co-Dependence, Democracy Spreading, War being harder to hide / whitewash, etc are factors, but as shown by the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, we are just one Asshole Dictator away from peace turning into war that BEST CASE SCENARIO only devastates one country.
Military Overmatch, which DARPA ensures, is key to this strategy, thus going “haha US military bad” is over-simplistic at best, and hostile to global stability at worse…

thanks for your opinion
The real problem is massive government subcontractors still produce a bunch of stuff that they will get paid for that doesn't work , properly 🤔
This ATV wind up at some rednecks yard out in the Carolinas somewhere or in Virginia.
