    The reason they can be heard is because the Colosseum was an amphitheater, meaning that it was designed specifically with the acoustics in mind. You could stand down in the middle and people could hear you up at the top because the sound kept traveling upward along the angle of the seats.
    An amphitheater is basically two ancient theaters put together and ancient theaters were known for their acoustics. That is why theaters today are still designed that way.

    FUN FACTS: the character of Maximus is fictional, however some the other characters around him are based on real people. The real life Lucilla(the sister) really did attempt to assassinate the real Commodus with the help of a few senators, but they failed. Lucilla & the other conspirators were exiled, then excuted shortly after. Also, the real Lucilla was the one who had an incestuous infatuation, not Commodus. The real life Commodus was strangled to death while bathing

    Yes, totally! The Geromé-painting was always on my mind as well when watching this one, and with the second movie it’s even more confirmed: the (fictional) helmet that is featured in that painting is in the movie (I think the guy on the rhinoceros, if I remember correctly.
    It’s interesting though: during the eighteenth century there was a German historian called Winckelmann who actually reintroduced a love and importance for the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. He did a lot of good things, but also really exaggerated their importance as an ideal to strive for.
    Artists and general society embraced that idea, which is why someone like Geromé - about 75 years later - was painting these highly fantasized idealistic paintings of gladiators in ancient Rome. (have a look at them, they might as well have been Frank Frazetta-paintings, it’s really cool, especially for that time).
    All of that is why the helmet stands out: it’s a fantasy, a fiction. Not to say it’s nonsense, but it is the ‘cinematic’ version of a piece of real history. And our current views of the Roman empire, the Greeks, etc. is still very much that view, as if it is the ideal, the ‘start of western civilizations’. In part, it was, but a lot of noise and exaggeration crept into it, only enlarged further by movies.

    The composer is the glorious Hans Zimmer! My favorite of them all and this is arguably one of his best works, imo. I just saw him live this past September. It was magical. Gladiator came out BEFORE the Pirate movies, so if anything, Pirates is the one influenced by Gladiator. They definitely have some similarities. Also, Hans did not compose the first Pirates movie; that one was done by Klaus Badelt. Hans DID compose the 2nd and 3rd films, though, and worked collaboratively with another composer for the 4th. He did not compose the 5th film at all.

    historical inaccuracy: Spain wasn’t a country yet and won’t be several hundred years later. the name “Spaniard” just makes it easier to identify the location maximus lives in

    • @eladrio2311
      @eladrio2311 3 дня назад +3

      The name "spaniard" was given to Maximus because that is the land where he is from and where his wife and kid were living. The land was called "Hispania", that's how the Romans named those territories in modern day Spain and Portugal. The country of Spain got its name from the Romans basically.

    Gladiators in reality very rarely fought to the death; they were far too expensive to train. One of the causes of the Slave revolt led by Spartacus was likely because some rich Roman asshole called Crassus forced some to fight to the death. Where death was involved it was usually because some people were to be executed so they were sent into the arena to fight trained gladiators. kerk

    I absolutely love this movie. It's easily one of my top 5 all time favorites and I can't say enough good things about it. II is horrible. HORRRRRIBLE. The story is boring and unimaginative. Denzel is ridiculously awful. He sounds like a modern day NYer transported back in time. Evidently he thinks he's too good to do a time period/regional accent. The other actors make you wish you were blind and deaf. There's so much bad CGI that it reminded me of a cheap B movie you see on the SYFY channel. Save your money and your time.
