  • This week we're up on the hill of Montmartre, as we put the focus on a little-known, yet defining chapter of French history: the Paris Commune. Walking around the picturesque area today, there’s little trace of the chaotic and deadly scenes that played out here just 150 years ago: a brutal civil war that came hot on the heels of a deadly Prussian siege. We look back at the Paris Commune and explore its legacy today. We also hear from historian Ludivine Bantigny.

Separation of church and state, equal pay for men and women, requisition of empty homes for the homeless, free schooling and legal services. (That`s terrible radicalism, from the 19th century ruling classes` point of view.. 🤔 )

The Paris Commune has nothing to do with Lenin or the Bolsheviks
The people of the commune were called "utopian socialists".
There was much vandalism during the commune but thats to be expected from a mob angry at the elite.
You can keep pretending its just the reds that keep murdering people in great quantitiea, but then youd be ignoring the entire rest of history just to make that bad point

It's somewhat misleading to claim that the Paris commune was purely a Parisian idea. Don't forget that many of the new ideas related to egalitarianism and liberty at the time were introduced to those living in Paris through the writings of colonialists who interacted with indigenous communities in the western hemisphere. There was indeed a cultural exchange of critique and practices that differed from the norms prevalent in France at that time. This in a way could have been a partial influence, but of course, poor living conditions and other countries played some role as well. Great video overall!

    • @harmpwns
