Thanks Brian. You made my first plane purchase since 1984 easy with your style and expertise. Been flying helis the last 15 years and wanted something "tamer".
Love your videos bro. I flew for about 3 years straight until my 3rd child was born 11 years ago. Luckily my wife mounted all my planes on the wall in our room because my 13 old just asked me to teach him to fly and Im in love with flying all over again. I make sure I use all your links to buy stuff. I just got the P51 Voodoo and now Im getting this Extra 300 V2. Im glad I have your video for the build.....I mean for the assembly...lol. This Safe mode stuff is all new to me. But Im learning.
Awesome David! Glad we could be part of your inspiration, and having kids getting into it, that's just priceless! Thanks again for following our links - this helps more than you probably realize!!!
Thanks again for the radio set up! It took me a while to realize that in order to set up safe select and safe that the plane had to be live. (Battery connected) So many of the operations can be performed on the TX with out being 'connected' to the plane but Forward Programming is not even a listed option without the battery connected in the plane.
This is correct, since you're using FORWARD PROGRAMMING, you have to communicate to the Rx from your Tx, thus the plane must be ALIVE ;) Glad you caught that. I need to speak about it in the next Radio Setup video so this can be more clear for people. This was still fairly early in our Forward Programming days, so I was also learning a lot at this point, fwiw
I asked you in your old Eflite Extra video about this plane vs the competitor with an answer that made me believe that you didn't want to really answer since you have an affiliation with the manufacturers (wich is understandably) but oh boy I was wrong. Nothing better than an honest person with honest opinions to the subscribers regardless of who is sponsoring the channel. All my respect to you. Thanks to your video I can say that at this point I can get either plane wich at this point almost comes to wich color I like better lol plus eventually they both will be in my hangar. Thanks again!
I honestly just couldn't remember, since it had been over a year since I had taken up the V1 Extra 300 ;) They're BOTH very good. Very VERY close, but the Extra is just a TOUCH better...but it's also a TOUCH more expensive...so tough call! And to be 100% clear and transparent, we're working with BOTH companies. Both are good companies, with good reputations, and we really want them BOTH to succeed, but our real focus is YOU, and what will make you happy. Good luck with your tough call ;) Extra 300 bit.ly/3rVnMiw VS Edge 540 bit.ly/3EUvlvJ + AR620 bit.ly/3H0w7cq
Brian, thanks for making this plane look so easy to fly and tempting me more and more to buy it even though its way out of my league! Camera crew, you produce the most consistently good camera work I have ever seen in RUclips RC videos, I really dont think people realise how difficult it is - especially in one take.
You can do it! This plane is not too bad if you're not on your first or second plane, but to make it really perform a true 3D dance, I would need to be a more disciplines 3D pilot, which I'm not [yet].
Buy it! Like Brian said, set the rates to 60% even up to 75% with safe and you'll do fine. I was nervous about mine and set my rates to 60 and immediately after the first flight I turned them up and even without a lot of expo. It's easier to fly then you'd think. Plus you can set multiple rates to a switch if it's not enough or to much. Just dont go lower than 60% cuz it won't want to turn. I got it as my second plane, my first was a pioneer 620 which I only flew 3 packs before I had the extra in the air. It is very versatile and tame if you want it to be. I would recommend buying a spare prop with it cuz they break pretty easily. Most importantly (for me at least) don't forget how big it is, the scale will make you think its closer to you than it actually is which is dangerous. It looks incredibly epic in the sky tho. I recommend getting it!
I’ve been a fan of 3d for a long time but needed a foamie 3d plane and as soon as I saw this video I knew I had to buy it!(of course I bought from your links!)😉 so I want to thank you for your amazing content Brian as well as camera crews follow skills because I know how hard it is to follow such a crazy plane!
Brian I really enjoy watching you fly and buid. Those airplanes I have only been flying for about 5 years I've only flew the little 949 Cessna but I do enjoy it
I ordered mine a month ago also came with a highly corroded prop nut, and I had no water damage to my box so it's an Eflite quality control thing. Regardless of that it still works fine while the rest of the airplane was flawless, those main wing screws are a bear to install though.
So strange!!! I didn't have issues beyond that too, but I was not thrilled that the nut had the corrosion on half of it...but not on the threads at lease ;) So wonder if the box was WET BEFORE SHIPPING??!?!?!
Dude. Thank you, seriously. VERY thorough and informative vid. Because of you I was able to figure out what that lil dongle plugged into ch6 was, PLUS not throw away my spinner, I thought they just forgot to pit it in there 🤣. Nice flight too, keep em comin!
I love how responsive it is and yet how docile it becomes for landing. I think it will be our next plane. Our twin timber comes tomorrow. We may have to wait until next summer.
Very valuable to have you do these builds warts and all - including wrong assumptions, and poorer quality! In this case I had big problems with stab and wing bolts. Has to be a better design for this. Ended up removing stab servo, and as you might say janking those wings to get the last bolt to find the nut. Beautiful plane though, decal bubbles and all! Rare earth magnet helped pull those recalcitrant suckers back out
Sorry you had those issues, but hope you enjoy yours once you've worked through the handful of issues you uncovered during the build. I don't know why some planes just plop together, almost by accident, and others just make you WORK for it, but either way, I'm glad you have it ready to get flying soon!
Go blue - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Black and Gold Baby - Iowa Hawkeys - just like this plane, in fact... I don't want to lose a fellow lover of all things RC Aircraft ;) BUT the BigTen Championship game might be a painful day for one of us ;)
High speed stall is when the speed of the plane plus elevator input results in plane g forces making the plane weight higher than wing lift so the wing stalls. And if nothing else a hammerhead is a stall turn/wing over!! You’re doing hovers! It’s all good!
We were going to wait until next summer for another plane, but I cant wait! This one seems like the best value for this type. Plus all of our existing batteries will work, so the plane is the only expense. I'll say it again. I love your channel. Your crew and you do such a great job of teaching the hobby to those of us learning the electric side of RC. The more I fly electric the less I miss nitro. Hopefully there is still a market for nitro because I will probably be selling a couple.
I noted in your review of the Arrows Edge 540 that it was a copy of the old FMS SBach. This plane is also, Just mainly cosmetic differences and more power.
Arrows is made by FMS, there's no "copy". This is strictly a branding decision. For example, when you get your milk at the wal mart, and it says WAL MART (generic), I can almost guarantee it's coming from the same dairy as your more expensive "name brand" milk. This is how all MFG'ing works. That being said, there may be slightly different electronics, or livery, or packaging but again, they're the same basic item. Sometimes the electronics are IDENTICAL, other than different stickers on them, unless they're calling out a different spec. This is why we do our review videos, since there's a bunch of choices, and many times, it's HARD to tell the difference in performance.
I think a yellow or red or blue or whatever $4 ebay color digital volt meter mounted on the bottom of the fuse so when you hover you can see your pack voltage without taking your eyes off of the plane. I love those little things, i have a green to red digital led one on my sig kadet sr., Looks really cool with lights when the sun goes down too.
Simply spend a few hundred hours in the winter with a flight simulator and you're ready to be a beginner. If you have a good handle on the small one, you can switch to 104" straight away? Provided you have the necessary change
I sure wish I had a driveway like that. Awesome 👏 , I mostly fly. DJI Air2S and freestyle quad copters but my old EFlight Sport cub from years ago is still flying great. It’s discontinued the ol’ red and white 4 channel. I changed prop and throw a 4 s in it once in a while. Makes it crazy . Love it. Love your channel. E flight should send you all your planes for free.
BRIAN! I've been flying at my local field just over a year now. I've been flying the Turbo Timber Evo and really love flying it. I wanted something Sportier and just picked one of these up. No maiden yet but I've been flying the wings off it in the sim.
That sucks u have to glue the rudder. Was looking for something with even less setup ….have other balsa plans was looking for something quick out of the box …bind and fly
I love it. "We're going to go through the full build." Pulls out of the box completely built, wings, fuse, tail feathers.... $400 for a chunk of foam...
A newbie here ….For receiver setup, don’t you just import the Extra 300 1.3 Eflight from the existing BNF preloaded in the transmitter? Would you adjust the arm on the rudder servo? I think yes, because the servo arm is traveling more nose left than right? And doesn’t one calculate CG with this AC upside down?
Nice! Looks like I have found my dedicated pure ACRO plane! Power to weight ratio..wow..nice.. *I'm still thinking of building a BIG COMMANDER MPD.. 3.0M twin cyl gas..😉👍
Mine took 1 square of lead (tire stick on) weight to be able to hover correctly. My 1st 1 was perfect outta the box. & For superb slow down characteristics, & unlimited hover to pull out, i use a xoar 14x5 prop.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Brian: Is there ANY way (u know of) to inhibit the rudder mix on the draco? I used YOUR setup on my nx10. (Regular plane with flaps. NOT their download setup. I always want MY safe in switch A, flaps on B, rates on C.). Thank you sir! 👍
I don't have a favorite...too many to choose from, really! I love most of them we have, but there's some favorites in different environments...and some the fly great, but not on my short list - like ANY 3D plane...not my primary aviation focus, but I do enjoy it ;)
Oh, ok good. I was worried that they would discontinue this plane (before I got it) I’m glad there’s a V2 so I don’t have to worry about that. I hope I can get my hands on the Su-30 before it also gets discontinued
Nice plane. Looks like a lot of fun. Hey Brian you call it hammer head. Weren’t you just hovering. Hammer heads hover than tip to left or right with power I thought?
@@BrianPhillipsRC man I just cant get mine to balance on suggested cg. Even with a bigger 3300 4s, pushed all the way forward, I can lay a strip of sticky weights (120 grams) over the prop, and I'm still coming out tail heavy That was a quick test I did when assembling, I need to sit down and figure it out still.
We have MANY LED tutorials on our earlier videos. Check out the playlist for the Spitfire 1.2m Eflite and see if that one helps you out, but we've done maybe another 20-30 led mod videos too, but you gotta look around a bit. We're about to release a video about a more recent OMP Hobbies Bushmaster LED mod too, if you'd rather just wait, but that's a BALSA WOOD PLANE.
Weird! I had a 2200mAh 4S 30C and 50C for the two flight...both were forward, but I was okay with a bit tail heavy for a 3D plane. I would encourage you to try it a TOUCH tail heavy and you might like it better ;)
I don't know, but would love to fly it ;) They don't work with us :(... They make some great planes, but they are more expensive, and some might say they're worth it, but to be honest, they do some things very well, and other things...not so much...just depends on your goals and if you're wanting to fly 3D, in particular.
Do they sell touch up paint that matches the color ? If not they definitely should , just so it can be touched up around the covers after the finish gets messed up . I'm the kind of guy that the marred paint would bother me .
I've heard a bunch of people suggest taking in a wing (like a tail half) into Home Depot or Lowes and getting paint matched. Sounds like a good idea, but I'd have an entire paint store in my basement if I did that ;)
Hi Brian just been watching your video on tx setup on the 300 extra , I was wondering why you just did not move the servo arm instead of winding the clavice all the way out
You can do that, but I didn't realize until it was basically done and we were SUPER up against the sunset - it was palpable, the pressure of sunset on a nice calm-ish night - winter in Iowa is not an easy time to do RC Aircraft reviews - LOL ;) But I love it too much to just take the season off.
Awesome Brian! I love my Extra 300 V2. I bought the second to last one left from Amazon before they were going to raise the price to $350 like Horizon did. Darn inflation. 😠. That’s why I had to get it from Amazon lol. I remember when my landing gear were that straight…. One flight a few weeks ago I was hovering and the battery died and it just dropped to the ground lol. How would you recommend bending them back? I have tried several times to bend it back but it just won’t work. Thanks!
If they're BAD, pull them out of the fuse and put them in a vice if you have one, otherwise, I would just bend them in the plane - I've done it a ton of times ;) We have Amazon Links too (see below) Help Us Patreon bit.ly/3xgmgdf PayPal brianphillipsrc@gmail.com Horizon bit.ly/38ZFade Tower bit.ly/2XqHt45 Arrows bit.ly/2YjzKJg Bitgo bit.ly/3AoH0QT Hobbyking goo.gl/TynFdU Titan bit.ly/3eXH9R7 Amazon amzn.to/2BGynZt
First of all your videos are awesome! I saw my first one yesterday and have been binge watching them since. I was into rc planes in my teens till early 20s and now just getting back into it 22 years later. I cant believe how much has changed in 22 year's, and i was very surprised how popular electric foam planes are now. After watching you fly that 300s ive decides that i really need to order one of them. As i was ordering one on your link i decided i have no knowledge of batteries and chargers and im wondering what you would recommend i buy with it as far as batteries, charger, and transmitter? I don't have a problem spending more money on something if its worth it. Keep up the good work!
Sure, we have links to the battery for each plane, right under the plane, and the Transmitter, presumably you'll be getting a good one, since you know that you'll be soon RE-ADDICTED ;) Chargers...here's what I suggest. You've been through the process before of buying and using only to eventually watch it go to almost no value many years later, so just get a good DUAL charger, and when you need an adapter, so you can charge a different size battery (which WILL happen) you can just build one at that time, or when you order the battery, you can buy the super-over-priced adapters - LOL... I have videos about chargers and SMART pack here - ruclips.net/p/PLXTH0DstRDc7fO2Vc4A4frWRhCmZo2qxG Battery - As I mentioned above, look at the link under the plane in the Video Description...you will see my recommendation, or if I suggest a couple, you can see I list a couple. SMART Gen1 is the best value to cost ratio, with 30C rating, but if you want to fly EDF Jets, and Helis at some point, you MIGHT consider the almost 1/2 more 100C packs in the Gen2 (you can see when you click the link)...but generally for a normal NON EDF plane, you'll be in good with 30C. Charger - S2200 bit.ly/398ohO6 - YEAH, I know...it's a lot, but it's kinda the cat's meow right now...and it'll do most everything you need for some time. They make a single channel one too, but it's almost as expensive... S1400 bit.ly/3rKYt3l - more wattage, and only ONE channel, but I wouldn't ever trade my S2200 for an S1400. Transmitter - iX20 bit.ly/38XUA1I
Oh yeah, welcome back to the addiction ;) Glad you're here with us Doug! P.S. You may have noticed, we have something like 1500+ videos, so you could spend a few years watching and have trouble getting caught up ;) Please do - LOL
Lol sorry im the kind of guy that cant see something right in front of my face. So i ordered the 300, 52200 g2 2x200w smart charger, 2 14.8v 2200 mAh 30c smart battery, and the nx8. Is there anything else i will need? Do i need any kind of adapter to charge the batteries? Thanks for all the help
love your vids, thorough a.h., entertaining and amazing flying- new fan, big fan! New enough to this that I don't have your huge collection of batteries (give me a few weeks)... wondering if I can use my existing 4s 30c 4000's? You cover 2200/3200, wouldn't mind some extra flight time (and not buying additional batteries)- assuming I find correct CG, will the incremental 2oz (vs. the 3200) cause any issues? I would prefer to drill it into the ground for better reasons :/ Appreciate all you and your 'camera crew' do, huge help getting folks like me back into RC!
One problem you MAY find, is that it's not about the capacity, which is the GOOD part of the bigger pack, the real issue is that you gotta get the CG right for the plane to fly well ;( IF you can add some dead weight to get everything balanced out, you'll be fine, but don't make a "rookie mistake" and think you can just have more capacity without a tradeoff. Heavier planes do tend to fly worse too...BUT not 100% of the time ;) There's always an exception, and situation where exceptions MAY exist in this regard. Good luck as you keep at it!
@@BrianPhillipsRC appreciate the response- good advice, I'll pick up the appropriate size so I have one less critical point of failure (and will initially set up a 60% d/r and 50% expo as you suggested) :/ I've learned a TON from you already, you're doing a huge service to a great hobby, Brian- thanks for all the effort and passion!
You guys are the best !!! I really wish you had a "Flying Camp" at ur place, would be a great vacation/get away/learning time with a great flyer and camera crew........ hint hint wink wink !!! Keep up the great work you do !!
Obviously this and the Arrows Edge fly similarly, When all things are equal I go with e-Flite. That said, I have an awesome 3-D plane that is every bit as capable, and only costs $109, and is almost indestructible. If you want to learn how to fly 3-D get yourself a Skynetic Sbach 342. Then buy this plane.
@@BrianPhillipsRC of course it isn't, its a $100 profile plane. But I guarantee its just as capable and just as fun and even flies similarly. Everyone wants to try flying 3D, but no one wants to spend $350 to try it out. These 1M profile planes are a great way to do it.
They were super similar...but I'd say I was flying ABOUT the same intensity too...so "yeah" - you'd have to setup a stop watch if you wanted to be 100% spot on, but I'd say 8-10 minutes is a SAFE flight ;)
I flew it pretty much tail heavy on purpose, but if I were shooing for more aerobatic, and less "3D" I would have used the CF horizontal stabilizer joiner, in stead of the metal one. Did you use the METAL ONE?
@@BrianPhillipsRC No I used the CF one and it was almost impossible to fly without nose weight.... I absolutely love this plane, its my go2fav and I have put over 200 batteries through it..... I do think the landing gear is "light" so I have done a mod to mine which works a treat... take a look if you get the time ruclips.net/video/WtoS2YNQRxc/видео.html cheers and thanks for replying ..... love your channel.... I dont know how you fit all your planes in your garage/house/hanger but keep up the great work and stay safe... merry Christmas from down under mate.
I bought this plane a few months ago but I have yet to fly it because I can’t seem to get The wing properly mounted it’s almost as if two of the4 screw holes are not aligned correctly did you have any issues installing the wings
Did you see how I had to PULL ON IT....rested opposite my hips? This is how we got them to take...also dip the tip in some Dawn to help lube the screws, and you'll enjoy it so much more ;) Get her in the air ASAP - Great plane! Watch our build...you will see what I'm talking about (it's ON this video...)
YEAH, and I've know about it for many-many moons...and it's been KILLING me not to talk about it. F-14 is one of my FAVORITE PLANES :) I can't wait to review that plane - although it does look like a handful!!!
Curious where you put your battery mine is tail heavy unless I’m all the way forward with 2200 4s for sure! So far forward that I can only use on strap.
The Arrows is cheaper and requires a cheaper Rx if you do it the way we did it, so with their coupon code, it's still a few bucks less...BUT they are both great planes. I think the Extra 300 is slightly better, and I do prefer the Rx that comes in the BNF planes ;)
I can't say that I have classified that closely, but I can give you one BAD one right off the top of my head... the XK J3-Cub - one of the WORST flying planes we've ever reviewed, and only one of the worst because it could have been so much better! As for the best, that's a really tough call. There are a TON of amazing plane, but I'd say something in the arena of the Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m (Carbon Z Cub SS bit.ly/30P5mUA ) could be a NO BS answer. I also really LOVE the Carbon Z Cessna 150T 2.1m (Carbon Z Cessna 150T bit.ly/30PJkkD ) as well...another REAL nice flying plane would be the OMP Challenger bit.ly/3oKazdF (+ AR631 bit.ly/3pYNC3c ) - VERY surprisingly AMAZING...the Dancing Wings PT17 (+ AR637T bit.ly/3pW3u86 ) bit.ly/3H5B3Nu - amazing ;) Sorry, I know this answer will leave a lot of AMAZING planes out, but these are some of my favorites that come to mind....I love the 80mm F16, and FMS Beaver 2.0m, and a bunch of others, but I can't have favorites with so many planes to choose from.....it's kinda over-whelming
Nice work👍 but I'm confused cuz you refer to the plane as v2. There's a v2 extra 300? I just ordered one and will be bummed if there's a second version. Or do you mean v2 ad in 2nd video of it?
They updated the Rx...that's it...rest is the same ;) AR636B in the V1 and AR661 in V2 - nothing else is different, and I can't tell a difference, for what it's worth ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRCI see. So I just ordered one last week. Will be here in 3 days. Will it have the updated rx? I had quickly glanced over the details on horizons website but didn't notice anything that stuck out to me as updated. But I'm also not very savvy as far as the rc lingo goes. But if you don't notice a difference I certainly won't. Would just be good to have the latest version. Love the vids btw. Been binge watching them all since since I found your channel!
I think it's the best balance for technology and value right now in the DSMX arena. Some will argue that the NX10 is necessary for "What's next" but I can't say that with certainty - too big of a price jump ;( As for what I would have if money were no object, I'd have an IX20 ;)
I do, except for 3D planes...I make a LOW EXPO mode (I call it CRAZY MODE) and a standard "middle" rate, and a LOTTA EXPO, something to get me back to the ground if I have issues.
It's funny when you try to avoid naming Arrows RC and I guess Horizon Hobby makes you do that but hey that's what it costs to do things for one brand. On mine I replaced the ESC to an Avian 60A so it now does reverse thrust! But I can't do as long flight time as you as after 5 minutes I've sucked a Spektrum 2200mah dry.
Horizon Hobby doesn't "make us do it", but we try to be nice to the brands we work with. In this case, since this was a review of their plane, we didn't want to get too in the weeds about the Arrows plane. We may do a full on SIDE by SIDE at some point, but we are trying not to piss off the companies we are fortunate enough to work with, or they might just say - screw you Brian ;)
Would you say this is easier or harder to fly than the ultimate 3D? I can fly my ultimate very confidently without safe (honestly think safe just makes you a worse pilot in the long run because it teaches bad flying habits) and I do fly it on max rates however I have a TON of expo, like 70-80% on high rates. I have flown a flex innovations extra 300 which did feel easier than the ultimate.
I think the Ultimate is pretty much the same...they're so close, I don't even really want to say one way vs the other. This in the context of me NOT being a 3D pilot ;)
I've used foam tac and never been impressed. I think it might be more for crafts, and less for 10 feet away at 140mph flybys ;) Not sure if there is any difference, just from memory...my Grandpa used Foam Tac once in a while, but I never thought it was very good. Even BSI (my go-to brand) made a foam tac product and I thought it got TOO brittle when dry, and it was still really expensive AND HEAVY. As for Foam to Foam - good. Mucilage (hobbyking) also good, but it can come from HK dried out, so buyer be ware.
no - only if someone gives it to you, then loads of expo (probably 40-50% and 75% on the rates or less) and use SAFE. It'll be a highly stressful for the newb ;)
My rudder hinges refuses to go all the way in so there's a gap between the top of the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer and the rudder. Any suggestions?
Hey Brian, Quick question for you. I’m looking to get back into the hobby, and I’ve been out of it for about 25 years. I used to fly with my dad and grandfather, balsa glow planes back then. I flew an extra, a something extra, a four star, ultra stick, and an acrobatic (large wing flat fuselage) plane. Seeing that it has been 25 years do you think this extra would be good for me to get back into the hobby (and start out in SAFE mode)? I just wasn’t sure if I needed to go all the way back to trainer or not since I’ve never flown foam or electric.
You could, but it's still a lot more performance than I would recommend for a returning expert. Here's what I suggest, but feel free to totally ignore this advice if I'm off base ;) I think you should try one of these "beginner planes" even though you have the skills for an Extra 300. If and when, like 3 weeks of intense flying sessions, you're ready to take the plunge BACK into the hobby, get a QUALITY Radio...like the NX8 ( NX8 bit.ly/3Ou7Fmk ) and then you can start following along in our radio setup videos. If money is LESS critical in this step, get the NX10 - it'll last you longer ( Tx bit.ly/3J05xSj ) since you'll get more years before you outgrow the technology for another higher level transmitter. Honestly, once you get your groove back - you can 100% handle a pseudo 3D plane like the Extra 300, but I think you might find it a bit TOUCHY as a returning expert. Just keep in mind, Ready to Fly (RTF) planes are way more wasteful ($$$) if you're going to STAY IN THE HOBBY...since you'll only need one transmitter when you're ready to settle back down into the hobby. Good luck - hope you find my advice helpful, and also consider an RC simulator, if you want to hone your skills for less cash, BUT you might just find it kinda LAME compared to the REAL THING. I think of them as a tool, not a sport. @@BrianPhillipsRC thanks so much for the reply. I actually plan to get a simulator. I unfortunately am limited on the simulator I can get because I only have a Mac. So I’ll be getting Aerofly RC and trying that out before I jump into anything. What are your thoughts on the P-51D June Nite V2 - 1.2m for someone like me? I watched your videos on it and it definitely looks like a fun plane to fly. Do you think that would be a bit too advanced for someone like me getting back into the hobby? I know back 25 years ago the pilots complained the balsa P-51s were notoriously difficult to fly, so I figured I would ask your opinion. I do plan on getting the NX8 no matter the decision (NX10 if it miraculously goes on sale).
Its weird if you put everything by the tail on that plane it flies amazingly i had the same problem so but the battery and everything near the tail but be very careful with the receiver wire make sure not to fuck it up but otherwise ur good
Great video as always Phillips family but this is my least favorite Eflite model by far. First of all it is NOT a 3d plane. It’s a good, powerful big air plane, but it’s not built for real 3d. Years ago when this first came out I spent a ton of time trying to learn 3-D on it because it was called the 3-D. I stayed frustrated and finally bought a real 3-D airplane and it was an immediate change for the better and I was able to quickly learn advanced 3-D hovering harriers and much more. There’s no way you could hold a decent clean hover for five seconds. And a decent 3-D airplane can easily do this. It needs much more room for a larger battery also. And the awful proprietary prop. It has a unique size hole so you have to buy that particular expensive prop for it. So I really have a grudge against this airplane lol.
Well, even though I don't think this plane is bad, I'm glad you're saying this plane isn't a 3D plane, since I too have a hard time hanging it on it's prop...I just thought it was me ;) I realize there are some WAY more 3D planes out there...like the profile plane, for example, but I'd like to fly one just for comparison.
I LOVE how your companion is not only supporting you by running cam, but she knows the gear and terminology as well!
Thanks Brian. You made my first plane purchase since 1984 easy with your style and expertise. Been flying helis the last 15 years and wanted something "tamer".
That is awesome! Thanks!!!
@@BrianPhillipsRC We met at some fly.
This is correct, since you're using FORWARD PROGRAMMING, you have to communicate to the Rx from your Tx, thus the plane must be ALIVE ;)
Glad you caught that.
I honestly just couldn't remember, since it had been over a year since I had taken up the V1 Extra 300 ;)
They're BOTH very good.
Good luck with your tough call ;)

@@jakeclauson9863 Cheers man!
He’s got me wanting one to. I suck at 3 d but how am I supposed to learn if I don’t.
You sure are very good with RC Planes.
Thanks!
Brian I really enjoy watching you fly and buid. Those airplanes I have only been flying for about 5 years I've only flew the little 949 Cessna but I do enjoy it
Loved the way you through this bird around the sky. She looks like a great bird, prop sounded smooth as well. Amazing how quick she went up. 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it! She was a blast to fly, but I have to stress, I'm not a great 3D pilot ;)
I ordered mine a month ago also came with a highly corroded prop nut, and I had no water damage to my box so it's an Eflite quality control thing. Regardless of that it still works fine while the rest of the airplane was flawless, those main wing screws are a bear to install though.
So strange!!! I didn't have issues beyond that too, but I was not thrilled that the nut had the corrosion on half of it...but not on the threads at lease ;)
So wonder if the box was WET BEFORE SHIPPING??!?!?!
Good luck Saturday, them Hawks have been a pain in Michigan's butt (in the 90's) GO BLUE
Go blue - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Black and Gold Baby - Iowa Hawkeys - just like this plane, in fact...
I don't want to lose a fellow lover of all things RC Aircraft ;) BUT the BigTen Championship game might be a painful day for one of us ;)
Nice flight...FYI It's the exact same prop on the Arrows 540..
Same size or exactly the same Prop? I thought the print was different on this one and that???
High speed stall is when the speed of the plane plus elevator input results in plane g forces making the plane weight higher than wing lift so the wing stalls.
And if nothing else a hammerhead is a stall turn/wing over!! You’re doing hovers! It’s all good!
Sure
Great freaking 3D flying etc. Near instant vertical on the first takeoff! Love the color scheme and scale canopy, etc. Keep up the great work, Bro.
Thanks, will do!
Those checkers are huge for orientation !
Thanks Brian, I also find my nob to be very important when master-gaining 🙃
I was told that might have an adverse impact on your vision - LOL!!!
Those little cheap voltage alarms are nice! We have had a bunch and still use them on our Gen1 Smart packs ;)

That Red Sport Cub is AWESOME - Esteban, my buddy had that 1.3m beauty, and we still fly it from time to time!!!
BRIAN! I've been flying at my local field just over a year now. I've been flying the Turbo Timber Evo and really love flying it. I wanted something Sportier and just picked one of these up. No maiden yet but I've been flying the wings off it in the sim.
Nice 👍 it sounds like the real thing it sounds like the Carbon Z Cub sounds the real thing when you give it full throttle.
Not sure it's supposed to sound that way....possibly I need to balance the prop ;)
Thanks Brian
You bet!
Nice flying!
Thanks Jesse!
Thanks! You've been a great help.
Thank you! Glad you're here with us!
My favorite is the flat inverted spin ,,, not that I can do it but it is beautiful to watch ,,,
Nice stick control brother 😎👍
Thank you so much! I'm still learning so much of what you're watching ;)
That sucks u have to glue the rudder. Was looking for something with even less setup ….have other balsa plans was looking for something quick out of the box …bind and fly
yeah, that part was pretty annoying to me too
I love it. "We're going to go through the full build." Pulls out of the box completely built, wings, fuse, tail feathers....
$400 for a chunk of foam...
Cornhole is 3D!
Great review, thing looks awesome.
3D cornholes - darn right ;)
I like this one. It flies nice just like a sport plane or 3d.
It CAN, but if you fly sport, put the battery further forward or fly on 3200mAh 3S and you can fly way longer and way more solid in general.
Like the box has on it abundant power. Wish it had a spare prop for that price.
It's definitely ABUNDANT on the power front ;)
A newbie here ….For receiver setup, don’t you just import the Extra 300 1.3 Eflight from the existing BNF preloaded in the transmitter? Would you adjust the arm on the rudder servo? I think yes, because the servo arm is traveling more nose left than right? And doesn’t one calculate CG with this AC upside down?
Nice! Looks like I have found my dedicated pure ACRO plane! Power to weight ratio..wow..nice..
*I'm still thinking of building a BIG COMMANDER MPD.. 3.0M twin cyl gas..😉👍
COOL! Good luck on that plane!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Ya, will be cool except for the price of the servos..haha
Great Job, Great Video, Great Plane. I love my NX-8 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks so much! This plane is really good!
Mine took 1 square of lead (tire stick on) weight to be able to hover correctly. My 1st 1 was perfect outta the box.
& For superb slow down characteristics, & unlimited hover to pull out, i use a xoar 14x5 prop.
NOW, i gotta take mine to the field! 🤯 Tho may be ruff fitting the extra, draco, & FMS pitts in a 16 canyon truck bed. 😳
I see, lower pitch to get out of the hole quicker? Good idea!
@@BrianPhillipsRC
Brian:
Is there ANY way (u know of) to inhibit the rudder mix on the draco? I used YOUR setup on my nx10. (Regular plane with flaps. NOT their download setup. I always want MY safe in switch A, flaps on B, rates on C.).
Thank you sir! 👍
Hola buenas me gustaría ver un vídeo detalladamente paso a paso la vinculación y proceso de configuración del extra300 con la NX8
This video is the video for you ;)
Love these videos!!!
Thanks Harry!
Great review! thanks - what's you favorite plane please?
I don't have a favorite...too many to choose from, really! I love most of them we have, but there's some favorites in different environments...and some the fly great, but not on my short list - like ANY 3D plane...not my primary aviation focus, but I do enjoy it ;)
Oh, ok good. I was worried that they would discontinue this plane (before I got it) I’m glad there’s a V2 so I don’t have to worry about that. I hope I can get my hands on the Su-30 before it also gets discontinued
Su-30 probably won't come back, I'm guessing so if you must, get it ASAP!!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Which flies better? Su-30 or F-18?
I think you forgot to put on the spacer between the prop and the nut, mine came with a little machined spacer
I wonder if I didn't get it??
@@BrianPhillipsRC possibly, it was on the motor shaft with the nut i think yours fell off in the video so maybe ot was in the box somewhere loose
Ahhh ha you do have some ball link pliers 🙂🔧🛩🛫🛬
yes ;)
Nice plane. Looks like a lot of fun. Hey Brian you call it hammer head. Weren’t you just hovering. Hammer heads hover than tip to left or right with power I thought?
When I say "hammer head", I mean flying vertical (hovering) in place...but I don't know about the falling away part. Maybe I'm saying this wrong???
Good job sir! Thank you for the detailed videos 👍
Mine was exactly the same with the wing bolts
We've had this happen a few times, so I think it's something about mid wing planes...
@@BrianPhillipsRC man I just cant get mine to balance on suggested cg. Even with a bigger 3300 4s, pushed all the way forward, I can lay a strip of sticky weights (120 grams) over the prop, and I'm still coming out tail heavy
That was a quick test I did when assembling, I need to sit down and figure it out still.
hi, How can I add the led lights that you have on description. do you have a tutorial on that? Also any tutorial in how to add flaps to any aircraft?
We have MANY LED tutorials on our earlier videos. Check out the playlist for the Spitfire 1.2m Eflite and see if that one helps you out, but we've done maybe another 20-30 led mod videos too, but you gotta look around a bit. We're about to release a video about a more recent OMP Hobbies Bushmaster LED mod too, if you'd rather just wait, but that's a BALSA WOOD PLANE.
Even with 4S 3200 mah installed had to add nose weight to balance. Curious if you had similar situation.
Weird! I had a 2200mAh 4S 30C and 50C for the two flight...both were forward, but I was okay with a bit tail heavy for a 3D plane.
I would encourage you to try it a TOUCH tail heavy and you might like it better ;)
That's one hoppy little plane.😂
For sure!
E-Flite Extra 300 or Arrows Edge 540. Which do you like better and why?
I like them both about the same. Eflite is easier since it's a BNF. Comes down to cost on this one. They're both very good.
What’s the alternative flex version…flex doesn’t come with receiver so close to the same cost wise
PLEASE share the link to its competitor!!🙏🙏🙏 was it the Hobby King MX2 ??
Great video! If you added an Avian Receiver you would get nominal voltage right??
If you have an avian Rx, should get Nominal Voltage as well as SMART pack data too, if you're using a SMART pack.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks! Destryoed my V1 after 65 flights - thing fell from the sky. No idea what broke in flight vs smash.
Thanks!
If they're BAD, pull them out of the fuse and put them in a vice if you have one, otherwise, I would just bend them in the plane - I've done it a ton of times ;)

Sure, we have links to the battery for each plane, right under the plane, and the Transmitter, presumably you'll be getting a good one, since you know that you'll be soon RE-ADDICTED ;)
Chargers...here's what I suggest.
I have videos about chargers and SMART pack here - ruclips.net/p/PLXTH0DstRDc7fO2Vc4A4frWRhCmZo2qxG
Battery -
As I mentioned above, look at the link under the plane in the Video Description...you will see my recommendation, or if I suggest a couple, you can see I list a couple.
Charger -
S2200 bit.ly/398ohO6 - YEAH, I know...it's a lot, but it's kinda the cat's meow right now...and it'll do most everything you need for some time. They make a single channel one too, but it's almost as expensive... S1400 bit.ly/3rKYt3l - more wattage, and only ONE channel, but I wouldn't ever trade my S2200 for an S1400.
Transmitter -
iX20 bit.ly/38XUA1I
Oh yeah, welcome back to the addiction ;) Glad you're here with us Doug!
So you have a Champ you'd like to fly in? Please hit me up in a REAL EMAIL if you want to do this sort of thing ;)
That would be a awesome idea. And make a few bucks if wanted to charge
Not in the same size class at only 900mm - different ball of wax ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC of course it isn't, its a $100 profile plane. But I guarantee its just as capable and just as fun and even flies similarly. Everyone wants to try flying 3D, but no one wants to spend $350 to try it out. These 1M profile planes are a great way to do it.
Did you get 10 minute flight times with both 30 and 50 c batteries
They were super similar...but I'd say I was flying ABOUT the same intensity too...so "yeah" - you'd have to setup a stop watch if you wanted to be 100% spot on, but I'd say 8-10 minutes is a SAFE flight ;)
How was your CG??.... my E300 needs heaps of nose weight to hit CG.... cheers
I had to pull the whole servo out to install the tail
I bought this plane a few months ago but I have yet to fly it because I can’t seem to get The wing properly mounted it’s almost as if two of the4 screw holes are not aligned correctly did you have any issues installing the wings
Did you see how I had to PULL ON IT....rested opposite my hips? This is how we got them to take...also dip the tip in some Dawn to help lube the screws, and you'll enjoy it so much more ;)
Get her in the air ASAP - Great plane! Watch our build...you will see what I'm talking about (it's ON this video...)
Center the rudder horn on the servo or with sub trims to equalize the rudder throw on this one. Ya missed a notch!
I see. thanks
Did you see the new f14 Hh just realest ??!! That thing is dope!!!!!!
YEAH, and I've know about it for many-many moons...and it's been KILLING me not to talk about it. F-14 is one of my FAVORITE PLANES :)
I can't wait to review that plane - although it does look like a handful!!!
Curious where you put your battery mine is tail heavy unless I’m all the way forward with 2200 4s for sure! So far forward that I can only use on strap.
We showed it, but I was flying somewhat tail heavy. Kinda hard to explain...but not quite as far as you had it. 4S 2200 30C
Thanks man!
This is a much better deal than the Arrows because the Arrows 540 doesn't come with a reciever.
The Arrows is cheaper and requires a cheaper Rx if you do it the way we did it, so with their coupon code, it's still a few bucks less...BUT they are both great planes. I think the Extra 300 is slightly better, and I do prefer the Rx that comes in the BNF planes ;)
@@BrianPhillipsRC
I agree the BNF offers a more refined package.
Hello Brian, what's the worst plane you have ever flown? And the best??
I can't say that I have classified that closely, but I can give you one BAD one right off the top of my head... the XK J3-Cub - one of the WORST flying planes we've ever reviewed, and only one of the worst because it could have been so much better!
As for the best, that's a really tough call. There are a TON of amazing plane, but I'd say something in the arena of the Carbon Z Cub SS 2.1m (Carbon Z Cub SS bit.ly/30P5mUA ) could be a NO BS answer. I also really LOVE the Carbon Z Cessna 150T 2.1m (Carbon Z Cessna 150T bit.ly/30PJkkD ) as well...another REAL nice flying plane would be the OMP Challenger bit.ly/3oKazdF (+ AR631 bit.ly/3pYNC3c ) - VERY surprisingly AMAZING...the Dancing Wings PT17 (+ AR637T bit.ly/3pW3u86 ) bit.ly/3H5B3Nu - amazing ;)
Sorry, I know this answer will leave a lot of AMAZING planes out, but these are some of my favorites that come to mind....I love the 80mm F16, and FMS Beaver 2.0m, and a bunch of others, but I can't have favorites with so many planes to choose from.....it's kinda over-whelming
Cool 👍 this would be a nice 3d plane for me.
For sure! 3rd or 4th plane would be great!
Hi what's the difference between this v2 and the first one?
Only the Rx - was AR636B and now AR631
I bought an 3200 4s 50c battery for my extra 300 as you linked below. It looks big, will it fly on that battery?
Should do just fine ;)
Like this plane,
GO BLUE!! HAIL!
Thanks! I do too!!!
Is the NX-8 the best controller that you would use or is their a better 1 that you would buy?
I think it's the best balance for technology and value right now in the DSMX arena. Some will argue that the NX10 is necessary for "What's next" but I can't say that with certainty - too big of a price jump ;(
As for what I would have if money were no object, I'd have an IX20 ;)
You mentioned your in your mid rates do u use the same dualrates on most model’s? And what are they if u don’t mind?
Can you take off and land on grass?
Would you say this is easier or harder to fly than the ultimate 3D? I can fly my ultimate very confidently without safe (honestly think safe just makes you a worse pilot in the long run because it teaches bad flying habits) and I do fly it on max rates however I have a TON of expo, like 70-80% on high rates. I have flown a flex innovations extra 300 which did feel easier than the ultimate.
I think the Ultimate is pretty much the same...they're so close, I don't even really want to say one way vs the other.
This in the context of me NOT being a 3D pilot ;)
i cant decide who is more professional.. the pilot or camera crew.. Sorry B,, going with the camera crew
do you have any 2200 4s lipos your willing to give up
How is the Foam 2 Foam vs Foam Tac?
I've used foam tac and never been impressed. I think it might be more for crafts, and less for 10 feet away at 140mph flybys ;)
Not sure if there is any difference, just from memory...my Grandpa used Foam Tac once in a while, but I never thought it was very good. Even BSI (my go-to brand) made a foam tac product and I thought it got TOO brittle when dry, and it was still really expensive AND HEAVY.
As for Foam to Foam - good. Mucilage (hobbyking) also good, but it can come from HK dried out, so buyer be ware.
@@BrianPhillipsRC thank you sir!
First plane or no?
no - only if someone gives it to you, then loads of expo (probably 40-50% and 75% on the rates or less) and use SAFE. It'll be a highly stressful for the newb ;)
My rudder hinges refuses to go all the way in so there's a gap between the top of the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer and the rudder. Any suggestions?
Hey Brian,
Quick question for you.
Here's what I suggest, but feel free to totally ignore this advice if I'm off base ;)
I think you should try one of these "beginner planes" even though you have the skills for an Extra 300.

Hey Brian, Is AS3X always on? I noticed you put SAFE select on a switch. But is AS3X automatically on by default?
the guy i got my Extra from said it can run 3700 4S battery. i have not flown it yet but before i do, would it be safe?
Mine is WAY! too tail heavy. Is it supposed to be like that?
Its weird if you put everything by the tail on that plane it flies amazingly i had the same problem so but the battery and everything near the tail but be very careful with the receiver wire make sure not to fuck it up but otherwise ur good
I got the old version last month what the heck .
You did??? How did you find and OLD version? At the LHS?
@@BrianPhillipsRC I was wrong it has the Ar 631
Hey brian, i have the dx6e and theres no forward programming option, how to i setup safe and as3x to my extra 300
Update your firmware, and see if the feature shows up. I had to do this with my DX18 Gen1.
I’m not a 3D guy but it’s a cool plane!
I keep hearing this ;)
You should do a giveaway
thanks for the tip
Edging it out 😅
Lights!!!
There's a light on the Rx - LOL ;)
Well, even though I don't think this plane is bad, I'm glad you're saying this plane isn't a 3D plane, since I too have a hard time hanging it on it's prop...I just thought it was me ;)
I realize there are some WAY more 3D planes out there...like the profile plane, for example, but I'd like to fly one just for comparison.
