My wife and I operate a small ranch in Texas. We are down to about 70 head plus bulls. We have had all 15 of those conversations multiple times. Everything you said is spot on! I can especially vouch for the commitment part...we took in a middle-aged horse when our kids were young and committed to be his forever home. He is now 36 and giving rides to the grandkids.

As an owner of two miniature donkeys myself, I believe you are “Spot On” with your #1 consideration. Owning a donkey “Is a lifetime commitment" since they can easily live 30 years and possibly many, many more. It's wonderful that donkey owners like yourself, share this information with everyone. Donkeys are cute and adorable but many do not realize the amount work and commitment it really takes to own them. Great job on this video Cady, thank you for sharing it.
Thank you! Yes they are so cute and sweet. I think anyone that has the time and money for them should get them, but I for sure think that they need to be loved and cared for and that takes a good amount of work.

This is the type of video every person should see before they are getting ANY type of animal. People tend to be impulsive and go out and get an animal, only to find out what is involved in raising them, and then lo and behold the animal is in a rescue center looking for a home. I have eight ducks, which are like pets to me, haven't been on vacation since, and when I went to visit a family member 3 states away, I had to buy a van to transport them there taking along carriers for beds , etc. Animals are wonderful, but you have to give up a lot of freedom to own them properly, they are a commitment like you said, and may be a better bet for older people who are retired and have already sowed their oats.

I LOVE this video for the simple fact that you said everyone should have a donkey. I have a weird love for these creatures. We are a small op for now but we plan on adding bigger livestock eventually.
Aww thanks! I love them so much!!! I have always wanted one and a few years ago we finally bought this property so I could have one. And you know…. Why not have 4:) thanks for watching!
Excellent list! But can I add one more that I have found critical? Don't get a donkey... get at least two. They are herd animals and need a friend of their own type. One donkey on it's own will go mad and become obnoxious. It's just not fair.
That is an excellent point! Thanks for leaving that comment, you are so right! That is important. I wanted one so bad my entire life and as I did research I realized I needed to get at least two. Now we have 4 lovely donkeys. -Cady
Same thing goes for Huskies. Like donkeys, many people think Huskies are so cute they just have to have one. Nope, like donkeys, Huskies are “herd” (pack) animals. One Husky will lose their almost wolf mind and exhibit undesirable behaviors if they don’t have another Husky partner. Yes, there are exceptions, but they’re just that: exceptions. Get at least 2 if you’re thinking of adding donkeys or Huskies to your life - and buckle up, it won’t be boring.
Have you watched Christopher Amerouso who sings to donkeys? Hazel and Heaven are their names and they love him singing and playing guitar for them as well as other animals.
Always wanted a donkey until I discovered mini donkeys, ok now I want 3! but a couple questions I didn’t consider, like how much they eat, and running water pipes out to them. This video was perfect! The details are up to me to figure out like where to get all this money to be able to do all this. 😅
@@tat2dMama68 yes!!!! Mini donkeys are so cute!!! Everyone’s set up is different and their time / money / ability to do various things is different, but I can sure say donkeys are the best. They are worth it.
This video is a prereq before adopting/buying any animal, and should be seen before taking any decision...so many animals are abandoned...😠 Many thanks for this video and your advices....donkeys are so lovely .... 😍
It really depends what type of grass. There is too much sugar in many grasses for them, so they need a mix or low sugar option. I also give mine California trace minerals and they also get treats. We give them stable mix in the winter, but just a little since it is alfalfa in it. Thanks for for watching! -Cady

Hoping you'll have more videos that give the answers to a lot of these questions. I have a few, other than having a barn obviously can you have donkeys in a place with a cold winter? Are they okay with a blanket on them walking around during the day in the snow? And what can you use them for if you want to put them to work? Not in an abusive way of course but in a way where they help out and get praise and treats
I liked the video but needed the information on what it will actually take just to own a or 2 guardian donkeys ( 1 / 2 ) to actually watch over a very specific fenced area & you mentioned oO Toys...??? I know farmers that have them just running wild about on there small acreage of farm lands, & that they are friendly towards other people but are territorial from what i seen, are they actually worth it if you don't ever have the time to actually pick there hoves teeth monitor them like a dog your housing inside your house, cos i was told donkey's will eat your grass & drive off pray predators, & that they pretty much take very good care of themselves without common pet life aid help from the owners & yes, i do want to know how much a donkey will eat a week? Or if they can just eat your grass that grows like crazy fast, & gets high fast? Will / would that be enough ma'am, for them a few acres of land ? Very seeious concerns there, Google doesn't have the real life experience & facts & knowledge that people do whom's already owned & raised them, that's why i came here, is to learn as much as i may be capable of learning before I'd even dare think of incorporating a Donkey into my life or challenges i may face with them.... I hope they are actually worth it!!!! Like really...... ????
Wow, thank you! I've been recently thinking about getting a pygmy donkey. Maybe two? What are your thoughts/knowledge about those kind? And do donkeys do better with a buddy?
I don’t have experience with the mini donkeys, but I understand they are similar. I’d recommend trying to find a local farrier that is familiar with donkeys and a local vet. Just to be sure you are all set up before you get them. They might even be able to recommend some that they know are looking for a new home. Donkeys really benefit from having at least 2 so they can play together. Donkeys have specific play behavior that is best suited for another donkey.
@@MayfieldRanch Thank you so much for the thoughtful and informative response 🙂 I will definitely be continuing my research for quite a while before I commit. I will want to provide an excellent home, and ensure that they will be taken care of if something were to happen to me. Have a wonderful rest of your evening 😀
I have really been wanting donkeys. So far all I have had is free range chickens but the coyotes have taken a few out. Please have a follow up or more details or answers on this list. I want to get donkeys before my daughter turns 2 so it's a normal thing in her life.
That is great! I have all the follow up videos planned. I’ll provide updates for you. Donkeys are truly amazing. Feel free to ask any questions and I’ll try to help you get answers. Our donkeys are such big loves. Having them was a life long dream of mine that finally came true.
Also... donkeys should not be out on lush pastures. They are arid, desert animals and get fat easily on grass, causing obesity that is very hard to lose.... keep em on straw hay. Or something similar. Don't get 1 donkey. 7:47 They need a companion. Don't get a donkey thinking a donkey can fend off a wolf or a pack of Coyotes from harming your sheep or goats, etc. They are not watch dogs, but will sound the alarm if danger is around. Foot care a must!. Long-lived animals. Be prepared for the care of aging donkeys.. Great video. Thank you!
Wow I finally found someone that loves donkeys as much as me. My late Grandfather and I had a family of 4 donkeys when I was a kid. I just loved them, but when my grandpa passed away my dad made me sell them. I was 19 and I'll admit I cried the whole way home.I still think of them every day. Now that I'm older and I'm planning on getting a one or 2. What do you think the it would cost per year.?
Aww I’m so sorry, my grandpa had a blind donkey and I loved him when I was little. I think that probably is why I have wanted them my entire life and I sure do love them so much! Here are my prices. We are in CA, so the prices might be slightly different in other areas. $60 each every 6-8 weeks for farrier Hay is $21 per bale for Teff hay and each donkey needs 1/2 to 1 flake twice per day. There are probably 12-15 flakes per bale, it depends they type of hay you buy and who bails it. So around $1.50 per flake or up to $3 per day per donkey. The vet is a minimum of once per year for shots and it is an $80 ranch call price and $72 per donkey for shots. It could be more if you need additional vet calls, but we typically don’t after we had Gunnar gelded. That was really the only extra expense for medical and it wasn’t extremely expensive. The fly masks are $20 each and we usually need 2 per summer season for each donkey, they do wear out and need to be replaced. Worm medicine is $7 each per donkey, you might be able to use 1 tube per 2 donkeys. Maybe worm once every few months or 4 times per year. You probably want some fly spray. This is probably $30 but will last a few seasons. I would assume another $50 or so for random medicines you might want to have on hand like butte, or allushield, or swat, or any other various items. So annual costs could be: farrier $60*6= $360 per donkey Hay $550-$1100 per donkey Vet $160 per donkey (only an extra $70 per additional donkeys) Fly masks $40 per donkey Worm medicine $21 per donkey Fly spray $30 for all donkeys for a few seasons Extra $50-$100 per donkey for meds Extra $100 per year per donkey for California trace minerals. Extra $100 for toys or treats. We feed our donkeys saltines so it adds up over the year. Maybe consider halters and ropes- typically just a one time expense- you might need a second or third if you get a growing baby, but you don’t need a new one ever year for adults. We have had ours 5 years. Annual Total is $1411-$2211 per donkey and I would recommend a minimum of 2 so they are happy, This doesn’t include the barn or fencing or anything like that. If I had to build another barn I’d get a couple of shipping containers and build a roof over them. Let me know if you have other questions and I’ll help as much as I can. Cady
@@MayfieldRanch Thank you so much for your time and expertise. I really appreciate it. I came across your channel today, subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos. love and respect from Canada!
Is there going to be a follow up video with these answers? I want more! We have definitely considered a donkey but I have no idea how much they eat and what that cost commitment is. 🤔
Very nice video - some people bring up the aspect - given we’re talking of “equines” - why a donkey - and not a horse or a pony. Here in Ireland we have some magnificent specimens of horse (principally because of the horse racing industry) - there’s also the magnificent Connemara pony (and not forgetting all the other lovely ponies) - that said, many of us aren’t “made” for keeping horses (whatever about certain ponies) - by contrast, a donkey - though it requires a certain level of commitment - shines through - despite the absence of the “sheer nobility” one associates with a horse - as a compact, “constant, boon companion”. Glad you mentioned the aspect of “poop” - my understanding is that - in addition to the obvious slightly unpleasant visual aspect - donkey dung can allow parasites, flies and other nasties multiply and eventually affect the animal’s health - so it needs to be got rid of.
Yes it needs to be managed for sure. Just like most farm animals. The great thing is you can use it for the compost pile and create an amazing garden. Thanks for Watch and taking the time to comment! I appreciate it. -Cady
It would be good enough for me:) the fences don’t stand a chance though. They would chew through wood fences quickly. Maybe find a local farm to pet some. That is the best of both worlds. Pet them and cuddle them and don’t have to pay for the feed. 🤣
It took so long working towards this goal to achieve it. It for sure was not an overnight achievement. If you really want something you can totally work towards it to achieve it.
Your animals are beautiful! Would it be possible to keep a donkey in a backyard? I don't have a post either, but considering that they are original animals from deserts and arid regions, I believe it's okay to raise them with hay, right?
It probably depends on how big your yard is. Yes you can feed them hay. You just need to find a low sugar hay. Some people feed barley straw. We feed teft hay. Donkeys need to have another donkey to be happy so consider getting 2. Do you have a shelter in your yard? I would also think about all that poo. You have to keep it picked up to prevent flys. I think to have plenty of space for the animal you would need about 1 acre. A good rule of thumb for livestock is 1 acre per large animal like a cow/horse/donkey. If you have smaller animals like mini donkeys or goats/sheep then 2-3 per acre would work and chickens ~20 per acre. Hopefully this helps give you an idea of the space you need.
It is just something to consider. For me it is super important because I just want my babies to be take care of. I don’t think there is anything wrong with getting them and giving them a good life though. ❤️ I guess none of us can ever predict what will happen. We just need to care for them and love them and do our best. Thanks for watching! -Cady
It is always better to have 2 donkeys if you can. They will be so much happier to have a donkey friend. I would recommend .5- 1 acre. Ideally you would have it crossed fenced so you can keep them on a dry lot when needed and let them out in to the pasture to graze and play. You could probably have 2-3 on one acre. A general rule of thumb is one horse or cow size animal per acre, so since mini donkeys are smaller you can have a few per acre. Mini donkeys are so cute!!! ♥️
@@MayfieldRanch Thank you so much for your reply. I have .25 acre fenced yard in the city so no pasture. I just adore their antics and have always wanted to welcome one into my family. I have parrots so I know all about vacationless living with animals that live a very long time. I may have to buy more property at some point 💕
I want a miniature Donkey so badly companionship I saw one for sale for 600.00 Is this price to low/High? I LOVE THEM PLEASE LET ME KNOW THANK YOU AND HAVE A BLESSED DAY ♥️🙏🏻😇
Before you get a donkey get your homework done. They can live up to forty & they are herd animals that bond & need a donkey friend. They need lots of care, attention & the right environment. You can just stick them in a field & give them a hug every now & then. In the UK there are thousands of donkeys that had to be rehomed. A donkey is for life not just for amusement & they are hard work
Yes, it probably is if you already own horses. It may be if you own any livestock really. I just thought that it may be helpful for anyone that is considering getting donkeys or animals in general that didn’t have experience with them. Thanks for watching.
No I would for sure not do that. The mini is so small it could be a problem. Generally around 6 months, but we were extremely cautious and separated ours earlier and had him Gelded once he was ready at 6 months of age. We wanted to prevent breeding for ours.
Omg i just realized how much I need one BEFORE I came here. I want the strength and packing abilities but also the security guard and loving buddy abilities 😁 they’re so doggone cute. ALSO for you cute Christians out there… I’m not one anymore but only kindly make fun of you now. Here’s a cute story I learned at an Orthodox Christian monastery in Safford, AZ. The backs of all donkeys have a cross on them because Jesus rode one on Palm Sunday and they were blessed by being touched by him. Isn’t that adorable? I love those nuns. Wish I still believed the myth cause those orthodox folks are good people.
GREAT video - factual without being negative, realistic while showing true love for the animals in their care.

I completely agree that it is like children- a life long commitment in my opinion. I sure think they are worth every bit of commitment and dedication. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it! -Cady
Yes everything you said. If you can't afford the vet you don't need a pet. Thank you for your informative video, and please listen to her carefully!
Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate the support for my channel! ♥️♥️♥️
Thanks for the video. 😊
ty for sharing these facts and truths, I love donkeys, can watch them ll day, but I am 68 and don't live on farm, wish I did and had a husband younger than me, but these are all dreams so for now I just get to look at them and enjoy them in videos, but one thing I know is that when I die and go to heaven I am going to have lots of them and lots of border collies and other animals and they will all get along
Aww that is a sweet comment. I’ve wanted donkeys my entire life and we finally decided to just do it. It is a lot of work and not so easy at times. It is sure worth it though! I hope you get to visit some donkeys and pet them❤️
I LOVE this video for the simple fact that you said everyone should have a donkey. I have a weird love for these creatures. We are a small op for now but we plan on adding bigger livestock eventually.
Aww thanks! I love them so much!!! I have always wanted one and a few years ago we finally bought this property so I could have one. And you know…. Why not have 4:) thanks for watching!
Right! what is it about donkeys that are so lovable!
-Cady
Thank you, then two donkeys it is as a question.....of if it's even worth it for me & my needs necessities of land....
Thank you for making this video. We just moved on to 10 acres and I really want a dog meat and this is all really important to me you know.🧡🙏🏻
Thanks for watching!
You hit the nail on the head.
Thank you
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Have you watched Christopher Amerouso who sings to donkeys? Hazel and Heaven are their names and they love him singing and playing guitar for them as well as other animals.
I need to watch that. I bet the do love it. Mine love all the attention they can get.
Excelent video! thanks!
Thanks for watching!
This video is a prereq before adopting/buying any animal, and should be seen before taking any decision...so many animals are abandoned...😠
Many thanks for this video and your advices....donkeys are so lovely .... 😍
Thank you so much!!!! I really appreciate your comment. Cady
Would love to see more donkey videos as we want to get them too. Thanks for the great work
Thanks for watching! I’ll make more. I was planning to expand on each item and share more info.
Thank you 😂so thoughtful
Thank you!!!
I’m late to this vid, but can they live of just grass? Also great vid!
It really depends what type of grass. There is too much sugar in many grasses for them, so they need a mix or low sugar option. I also give mine California trace minerals and they also get treats. We give them stable mix in the winter, but just a little since it is alfalfa in it. Thanks for for watching! -Cady
@@MayfieldRanch thanks so much!
Hi Katie! Great video and I love donkeys! Not ready for more animals on the homestead yet but maybe someday…these would be so fun!! 😊❤love how all the donkeys enjoyed watching the new baby!
Thanks for watching! We sure love our animals here, but they can be a significant commitment so it is really worth considering.
I'll volunteer to watch them when your gone
Aww that is an awesome offer!!!!
Great questions to ask.
Thanks! Good things to think about! I still think more people should have donkeys!

Hopefully I'm getting a mother and her female baby and the now owner says she's pregnant. Do they just push out the baby naturally? Thank you!
Yes they do. How old is the baby she currently has with her?
3 months I was told@@MayfieldRanch
They said 3 months. Sorry, I thought I answered you last night. @@MayfieldRanch
Nice video. It was great to hear how dedicated you are to your animals and great information and things to consider. Great job.
Thank you!!!! I sure appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. We love the animals.
I need to come out and see them more 🥹 their so cute! This is very informative!
Thanks. Yes they are so sweet. ♥️🤣♥️
And… never take just one. They need to have company :-)
Your number 1 point is why my mom stopped having donkeys…. And she was right.
Thanks so much for watching! We love the donkeys so much and we do have a plan for the if something happens to us. They are like our kids.
@@MayfieldRanch Thank you so much for the thoughtful and informative response 🙂
I will definitely be continuing my research for quite a while before I commit. I will want to provide an excellent home, and ensure that they will be taken care of if something were to happen to me.
Have a wonderful rest of your evening 😀
Hello!! New Friend here from Canadian Family Life! Great Video!!! Lets stay connected! Have a great day!!!
Awesome! Thanks for watching! I’ll come check out your channel
That's so cute thank you
Do you have another video with answers to those questions?
I have really been wanting donkeys. So far all I have had is free range chickens but the coyotes have taken a few out. Please have a follow up or more details or answers on this list. I want to get donkeys before my daughter turns 2 so it's a normal thing in her life.
That is great! I have all the follow up videos planned. I’ll provide updates for you. Donkeys are truly amazing. Feel free to ask any questions and I’ll try to help you get answers. Our donkeys are such big loves. Having them was a life long dream of mine that finally came true.
i get the negatives but there so awesome
There are some real things to consider so they get proper care, but they are the most amazing animals and they make great pets.
Also... donkeys should not be out on lush pastures. Thank you!
All great suggestions!!! Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.
$60 each every 6-8 weeks for farrier
Hay is $21 per bale for Teff hay and each donkey needs 1/2 to 1 flake twice per day.
So annual costs could be:
farrier $60*6= $360 per donkey
Hay $550-$1100 per donkey
Vet $160 per donkey (only an extra $70 per additional donkeys)
Fly masks $40 per donkey
Worm medicine $21 per donkey
Fly spray $30 for all donkeys for a few seasons
Extra $50-$100 per donkey for meds
Extra $100 per year per donkey for California trace minerals.
Extra $100 for toys or treats. We feed our donkeys saltines so it adds up over the year.
Maybe consider halters and ropes- typically just a one time expense- you might need a second or third if you get a growing baby, but you don’t need a new one ever year for adults. We have had ours 5 years.
Annual Total is $1411-$2211 per donkey and I would recommend a minimum of 2 so they are happy,
This doesn’t include the barn or fencing or anything like that. If I had to build another barn I’d get a couple of shipping containers and build a roof over them. Let me know if you have other questions and I’ll help as much as I can.

Is there going to be a follow up video with these answers? I want more! We have definitely considered a donkey but I have no idea how much they eat and what that cost commitment is. 🤔
Yes! Thanks for watching! I plan to keep going and make a follow up video with more detail on each of the items.
@@MayfieldRanch please do! I need more info!
I think the answer to all those questions was "a lot."
-Cady
I got a quarter acre in the city. Is that good enough for a donkey. Maybe two?? Hahahahaha just teasing.
It would be good enough for me:) the fences don’t stand a chance though. They would chew through wood fences quickly. Maybe find a local farm to pet some. That is the best of both worlds. Pet them and cuddle them and don’t have to pay for the feed. 🤣
It's on my bucket list, but my list is long
I would like to ad >>>please get two as donkeys are very social>>>>
I honestly wish I had land and animals like you do! 😊
It took so long working towards this goal to achieve it. It for sure was not an overnight achievement. If you really want something you can totally work towards it to achieve it.
Can you keep a miniature donkey and goat in your garden?
I think you should say your opinion on how much property someone needs. They may “think” they know but be wrong.
That is a really great point. Thank you! I’ll make a follow up video. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. -Cady
I love them
I'm fine with all 14; it's number 1 that I don't have much of. But I can adopt a couple of older donkeys whose humans are gone.
It is just something to consider. For me it is super important because I just want my babies to be take care of. I don’t think there is anything wrong with getting them and giving them a good life though. ❤️ I guess none of us can ever predict what will happen. We just need to care for them and love them and do our best. Thanks for watching! -Cady

Thanks for watching. I sure love them.
Sooo cute 😍💓
Thank you!
How much space does one miniature donkey need?

A donkey is for life not just for amusement & they are hard work
Great advice! We love our donkeys and they sure are a lot of work. Thanks for watching sharing your advice. ❤️❤️❤️

This seems pretty common sense if you have horses
Yes, it probably is if you already own horses. It may be if you own any livestock really. I just thought that it may be helpful for anyone that is considering getting donkeys or animals in general that didn’t have experience with them. Thanks for watching.
Nice
Thanks for watching!
do you ride him?
No we don’t ride them. Kids could ride them though.
Can I breed a standard jack with a mini Jenny? At what age are they sexually mature?
No I would for sure not do that. The mini is so small it could be a problem. Generally around 6 months, but we were extremely cautious and separated ours earlier and had him Gelded once he was ready at 6 months of age. We wanted to prevent breeding for ours.
Beautiful 🥰😊
Thank you!
