This scene is very, very interesting because, even today, there are thousands of young black children who still believe that it is not "black" to be a good student, to study hard, do homework, and get good grades at school. I know this because I was a teacher who witnessed many black children telling classmates, who tried to be good students, that they were trying to be white by getting good grades. They would tease fellow black students who spoke proper English by telling them that they are trying to talk like white people! That kind of thinking dates back to the days of slavery in America and we must ask how such ideas could possibly exist today (2019). To those who say that slavery is over in America and black people should get over it and move on, I say, slavery is alive and well in this country but has been transformed into the present system of incarceration, as outlined by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. The slave master's attitude towards the black race exists today and is very cleverly hidden and disseminated in American society.
Incarceration is done to people that break the law. It isn't unique to blacks. There are imprisoned people of all races and ethnicities in this country.

"Have you been teaching her that African stuff?" Whites were so afraid of the African warrior spirit in both men and women, that the whites folks beat it out of them. “A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” -Marcus Garvey.“A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” -Marcus Garvey. No wonder so many black Americans disassociate with Africa and her people.
I don’t think most African Americans are descended from warriors. They’re mainly descended from Africans who were captured by rival tribes and ethnicities, then sold to Europeans/Americans. Some could’ve been warriors who were captured in battle, but only some. I think it was just general cultural intolerance.
She was afraid of what would b done to Kizzy if white folk heard her talking “that African stuff”. Just like she was afraid what they’d do if they found out she could read or write.

I remember watching this for the first time in 1977. I was 7 years old living in Chicago. It aired on a Sunday night and we rioted the next day at school. This movie affected ELEMENTARY school aged children.
Deuteronomy 28:49 The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand.
That's called a self fulfilling prophecy or an obvious prophecy. Wars will always be waged, captives will always be taken as both slaves and prisoners and lives will always be lost. Been happening for the last 10k yrs. If we fought against Korea, would you understand them? Do you speak Korean? 90% of the bible is filled with self fulfilling prophecies/obvious prophecies or a "fools prophecy". "Tomorrow the sun will rise!", does that make me prophetic?
Also, you can literally do a genealogy -DNA test. Actual Jews/Hebrews (not these Azenazi Jews, which are the ONLY ones Adolf went after) have a very specific and rare genetic marker. ROUGHLY ONLY 14% of American Blacks hold that genetic marker and roughly 20% Azenazi Jews hold that genetic marker. So...neither ethnic group/race are Hebrews/Jews. Latinos actually have between 22%-38% genetic marker for them, which is weird and isn't fully understood. So sorry, blacks aren't the "chosen" people of your hateful god. To him via his buybul blacks bare the "mark of Cain", and thus will be despised amongst the world, enslaved by his brethren and shall be made lower than the ox that tills the fields.... Which also inherited the curse of Ham first son of Noah. Honestly, the bible makes it seem as if your god hates Africans or dark skinned people. But then again, the bible was written by racist, sexist bigots...so yeah. But it's your life and right to believe in whatever mumbo jumbo you want, even if it's been disproven several upon thousands of times.
Revelation 13:10 “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.” Isaiah 14:21 “Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.”
Knowledge is power. Who wants an intelligent slave? Keep them dumb, docile and obedient and they'll learn to love you and worship you as a god, give them knowledge and they'll fear that they will rival you or worse... become you. "For god did not intend for man to eat from the Tree of Knowledge. For both the man and the woman hath ate from the Tree of knowledge, which is of good and evil and if they shouldest remain within the garden and eateth from the Tree of Life, life everlasting shall man have AND the knowledge of good and evil, for they shall become like unto us, gods, knowing of good & evil and having life everlasting. Thus the Lord thy god ushered both the man and the woman from the midst of garden, so they mayest not eat from the Tree of Life, becoming like unto himself..." -Genesis

The question is are blacks do reperation. We have contributed so much to this country.yet still denied.base access.yet the government is willing to flip the bill for immgrant.
That's an interesting question. The question is, if they are, who should pay for it? I'm what you'd consider white, or of Caucasian decent, and my family didn't arrive here till 1910, trying to avoid the first world war in Europe. They couldn't speak English, arrived broke, had no education, and worked hard labor as coal miners. There's a lot of ppl in this country who have no ancestral history to the Atlantic slave trade. Not mention, the period of American history that makes up the slavery era, is so crazy, there were actually some wealthy land owners of African decent, that were freed, obtained wealth and education up north, returned to the South, and bought plantation property, where they owned and sold multiple generations of African slaves. How do you deal with that in terms of reparations? Seems to me like it's too late. What purpose would it really serve in present day? I could see it doing more harm than good. Wether or not you think we've achieved any progress as a nation, in terms of race relations in the USA, the fact is, we don't have African slaves anymore, and legalized segregation is over. That being said, who would get these reparations? Who gets to decide? Who determines what and how much is a fair award? And obviously, who pays or gives up something to give it out? It couldn't come from tax payers. Every citizen who works pays taxes, so how would you determine who contributes. It couldn't come from your race. There are percentages of African descent, Americans who's families arrived post slavery, just like some Caucasians. Even if you could somehow answer all the questions, and you said there was a way to determine what ppl had ancestors living in America during slavery, and you could determine a system of reparation, paid by the those ppl to the ppl with ancestors who were enslaved, wouldn't that only work to set back the problem with race in the country? Obviously not everyone deemed eligible to receive reparations will be satisfied with the payment, and not everyone who has to pay it, will be fine with doing so. Not to mention the feelings of those deemed not eligible to receive them. It would most definitely spark hostility btwn ppl, and create animosity. You just be perpetuating a problem. It's a pretty complex, and debatable question, of which nobody has a valid answer. Personally, i see that piece of American history, as not only important, but also appalling and barbaric. It can't be forgotten & should stand as a warning of what can happen when humans engage in group or herd mentality. Those who were enslaved definitely didn't deserve a life in line with the one they led, and like a prisoner who has been wrongfully convinced incarcerated, that has subsequently been cleared and released, some form of compensation is in order. Unfortunately, its not as straight forward as thar example, so idk.
Yes, I understand what you are implying, but you have to understand the situation and magnitude of what Kizzy did. First and for most they were slaves that experienced abuse at the hands of their masters. Therefore, learned behavior was at play. Secondly, the consequences for a slave that knew how to read were far worse then a slap. Hence, Kizzy's Mother's reaction. In her mind extreme times calls for extreme measures.

I think that tKuntia lost his spirit. He married a women who never was free. Notice how Anne talks its always about what master wants? Difference between being born a slave and being born free.
Sure would have been nice if they hadn't directed Leslie Uggams (Kizzy) to talk as if she is a 5-year-old or a simpleton with her eyes open wide and her head bobbing forward with every word.
I think that was the point of her character being treated and acting childlike; her own parents telling her and warning her to not break any the master’s rules, plus Missy Anne even treated her like a 5-year old during one of their conservations.
I don't mind the South succeeding from the Union but I don't care for ANY type of slavery either. Indeed, Grant said the Blacks were some of his best soldiers and I can easily see why. Problem is today were ALL pitted against each other and The system will surely try to enslave us all- stay Free you all!
Too bad Missy Ann was lying she didn't even speak up and help kizzy from being sold by her father even though it was her who signed the traveling pass note.
Missy Ann should have spoken up .... but I am not certain it would have stopped Massa Waller from selling her. In the book, Belle told Massa Waller it had been Missy Ann who taught her to write, didn't stop him.
I don't get it. Blacks back then were just dying to learn to read or write and gave their life for it. Now you can't get black kids to read or write in school. I volunteered at one to help out and holy shit, it was a nightmare. Throwing the books and spitting at the desk. I was surprised.

Then I wonder why she took the role?? I guess those Wheat Thins ads she did in the 70's didn't pay much. I also heard she hated the role too. Add to that in real life Leslie Uggams and Sandy were friends. After the Roots project she'd call Leslie and bitterly complain on how the public treated her. Missy Ann was some chick, saying Kizzy missed an opportunity. Oh, right-- she'd turn down the chance to marry Larry Hilton-Jacobs's character to empty your slop jars???...
@@darlenebattle2713 😂 She took the role because all the popular celebrities were getting asked to play them. Lorne Green had similar problems. Alex wanted to tell his story so he needed the actors to pull it off.

@@PunkSlapper123 Jails werent even MADE until slaves were free'd...Should i name the new laws they made to lock us up soon as they free'd slaves. Lmao use your head & research .

The tools of discrimination, prejudice, ethnocentrism, and hate are used by a person to ensure his or her existence-to continue to climb up the economic ladder of life. In today’s society, like anytime in history, it’s boils down to what one needs to do to ensure one’s survival. As a PEOPLE , I sincerely believe that with self love, self preservation, most especially in maintaining the SAFETY of communities and UNITY, our survival will continue to be ENSURED, despite the facts that forms of inequalities that will continue to exist, almost every where , centuries and decades later! The most important thing is not to be anyone equal, but to continue to have a clear understanding that our survival depends on each other, as a group of people at home and abroad!

No wonder so many black Americans disassociate with Africa and her people.
This is why people like Malcolm X rose to prominence. The older I get, the more I align with his teachings.
