Wow. This is like the Grand Unified Theory of dashboard design. Just awesome. What do the multiple dots denote in your example of the Four Threshold Method? Do they denote status change from previous updates? (Perhaps quarters in this case?)
Multiple dots denote metrics that require attention for multiple reasons. E.g., a metric that's experienced a recent sudden dip (red dot) but is ALSO above the Actionably Good threshold (green dot). There are usually at least eight reasons why any given metric COULD potentially require attention (below internal expectations, below external expectations, sudden change in volatility, etc.).
