When Britain was Britain
Carl Birchall True. The only problem was there were too many working class people.
Beautiful London ...... and not a non-european in sight, lovely!
Yes, sadly many Europeans have left London since the ill-fated Brexit.
@@countfosco8535 - Don't be ridiculous, London's demise has nothing whatever to do with Brexit! It date back to the mid 90's where Tony bLiar promised to rub the country's nose in 'diversity.' In previous times, his head would be on a spike on Westminster Bridge!
@@countfosco8535 - Nothing whatever to do with Brexit, simply a result of uncontrolled immigration c/o Tony bLiar and his 'rubbing their (British Public) noses in diversity' doctrine.

My impression was the standardization of the RT type buses
I was born in South London in 1952. Amazing to see this and compare it to the the outhouse it has become!
My dad was born London 1949 Holloway my gran moved up to the north east off England in 1962 .my dad's 75 this year he watches these old videos and he says London is nothing like when he was a kid now .😢😢
Is there some reason it should be? It's nothing like when the Romans were in charge and it was called Londinium either.
Amazing ! No road markings ,no traffic greedy wardens , much more relaxing ...
I think the ratio ownership of motor vehicles was much lower during that time.
@@mayena Yes only people who worked hard and the top social classes had them pity the same rule does not apply today !
Very exclusionary.
@@mayena That's what we need too many people on the planet
Love this I was born 1952, great to see the era I was born into
So you now 70 yes old. Congratulations. Great days.
So was I. Summer. (I don't remember much about it. My birth, that is).
@@kenh3344 Well, he is now. But not when he posted it.
I would say this was circa 1955 as at 0:50 on the left is an Austin A40 / A50 Cambridge introduced somewhen in 1954. Certainly this is not 1952.
The AC Aceca at 1:44 was built in 1955.
A lot of this was shot in the City of London, I recognise Cannon Street, Mansion House, as well as a little further west with Holborn Viaduct, Farringdon Street, Ludgate Circus, Blackfriars Bridge, etc. The articulated truck with huge reels of newsprint on its trailer was a common sight there in pre- Murdoch days when most of the National newspapers had their offices in Fleet Street. The narrow lanes behind, like St Bride's and Bouverie Street were where the entrances to the printing works were and would would be clogged with these trucks unloading ready for the night's press run. A lot of this traffic came into London past us on the A20 from Reed's Aylesford Paper Mills on the Medway near Maidstone.
Beautiful - takes me right back, as though it were yesterday!
The Biro advert 4:00 puts this mid 1955 onwards and the 'Schweppes Tonic, In A Class By Itself' on the side of bus at 2:50 is from 1956
This film is around 1956 judging by the cars.
London Traffic (1952)
Such a pleasing lack of diversity in those days.
Wonderful footage!
0:49 No road rage here. Peaceful times.
Great British cars ! A Healey 100/4 !!!
Yes I noticed that too ..but not sold until 1953 ..so that puts this clip a bit later than stated ..probably 54.55.0r 56
@@planestrainsdogsncars4336 In fact I spotted 3 Healey 100/4s !!
The old Routemaster was an icon of London for decades. Travelled on a new one the other day and was pleased to see they've brought back a lot of the old design features, including the maroon interior colour
There are no route masters in the film, these buses would be most RTs or RTLs or maybe an RTW.
So many names disappeared now.
Les années 1950 jusqu'à 1990 mieux que les années actuelles et futures.
1955 Chevy at 3:58
I say I say I say, my Mother went into the butchers and she asked the butcher, do you have anything left for my cat and the butcher replied I've got a sharp knife. 1950s joke
No road markings.
Do we HAVE to see Mick Jagger at the end of every Pathe? How about Gracie Fields?
The Morris Oxford is much later than 1952
try using a timestamp..
2:41 this Morris Oxford? made 1948 - 1954.
yep it is I think could be 1954/55 or did sombody say 56?
I remember in the early 1960s how black St Pails was due to 100s pg yrars of soot, they cleaned it
Also notice no pedestrians with mobile phone addiction.
ABC = Aeriated Bread Co. Their bakery was in Camden Town.
Looks like a job for The London Police!
I love the ACME truck in 1:57
Why? If I may ask?
1:42 what is the name of that 3 wheel van on the left
Scamel mechanical horse
@@tjm3900 Thank you you can have a pizza 🍕.
We used to call them dog killers because if they didn't hit the front wheel it would hit the back ones.
that guy was lucky at 2:14 .. and yes Motorcyclists and cyclists still do what they do today back then .. completely ignore everything around them and carry on regardless..
2:14? You mean, turning left? Nothing wrong with that. There was nothing there.
Or 2:07? Coming out from behind a car. That's OK too.
If you were a cyclist in 1955 and were 40, youd have experienced cities being invaded by cars and spaces you could previously walk or cycle in no issue become dominated by cars. And you think car drivers are the victim?
@@adambennett805 Thankfully we no longer live in 1955 .. we have moved on. .you carry on living in the past .
Emperyalist monarchies dejjal uk.
No lane markings. Didn't even put centre lines down. So it just turned into a giant rat race. Cutting each other up like it was the national sport.
